Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. In the two photos below, photographer Fritz Kaeser captured this Mobile Orientation Unit presentation on June 28, 1945, near Cividale, Italy (at least that’s the assumption as Cividale is scribbled on the back). I did a search on “Mobile Orientation Units”, but didn’t have any success learning more about them. Fritz ran a studio in Wisconsin before World War II and then headed to the Western U.S. after the war, photographing the American Southwest and the Rocky Mountains. These photographs are a part of Denver Library’s Western History Collection.
This photo shows the Tenth Mountain Division Information and Education’s Mobile Orientation Unit’s jeep-top stage parked in the middle of a grassy field during a discussion of the Pacific campaign. Pfc. Bob Wright (left) and Sergeant Ed Curry sit at tables atop the stage. Behind them is a banner with a map of Japan and the slogan: One war, one world. Has a cj3a windshield installed, comes with but not installed rollbar assy, sidesteps, no top but a new all weather cover,it has later cj 15 inch wheels and almost new m&s tires (also comes with 5-16 inch jeep wheels), all 4 new springs (mounted on another Jeep but never ran), front hubs, diamond plate rear body covers (not installed) a really nice tow bar and towing lights plus lots of other Jeep parts.”

“Runs good, i drove it around town before it got t o cold. Everything works but a couple of the gauges and brake lights. I’ve put everything from plugs and wires to carb. rebuild, bearings in the front end, hoses and belts, lights. Gas tank rusted out so i put a plastic one in for now. It might be the carb or a fuel pump. I suspect the problem is cheap to solve. This might have little or no rust.

The price is a bit high on this project. However, what interests me is that this appears to be a M-38 body, with the exception of a battery box. And, this doesn’t appear to be a replacement body to me.

Bob spotted this unusually modified MB. The seller believes this was converted by the Greek Army.

“1948 Jeep Willy’s CJ2A. This jeep has been fully restored around 10 yrs ago. It had 10,000 dollars put into it. It is in extremely good shape and virtually rust free. The paint is still in excellent shape. It has been converted over to 12VDC so as to make it easier to start, especially in cold weather. It has a flathead 4cyl, and runs excellent. The 4 wheel drive works great and shifts smooth. The gear ratio is 5:38. It has been stored indoors. The only trades I am interested in would be a 3/4 to 1 ton 4X4 truck either chevy, gmc, or dodge. Of equal value.

Dexter forwarded the pics and noted, “This guy sent me lots of pics. It’s an early slat without a glovebox. The engine number is I10885, which puts it in the “no glovebox category.” The 10,885th slat made.”

(08/26/2010) According to the seller, this is a factory built Veep. This is one of the nicer Veeps I’ve seen.
“This is a factory built Veep. They were built from 1979 to 1981. It is an all metal CJ3 body on a really tough square tube chassis with all VW running gear. Really well done and well constructed. Drives smoothly like a VW and not like a jeep CJ3. It is the ultimate ride for street or off road. Would make a great hunting buggy. Will go most anywhere without much effort. I have owned the veep for over 20 years and it has always been stored inside. The bottom of the car is as clean as the top. It has a soft top, frame and doors. The car was appraised about a year ago for insurance purposes at $12,200.00. I am asking $9,250.00 for the car and will look at all offers. Need the storage space.”
Or spotted this video of Israel’s first military parade. Part way through you’ll see some Willys rolling through. There are a few fascinating related videos along the right hand side as well. Having visited Auschwitz & Berkinau in Poland, I found those particularly interesting.
This looks solid at first glance, however it is missing the steps, suggesting that the body needs closer inspection.

This has an inline 6 that runs. He just can’t get it into gear.
“What i have here is a 1942 ford gpw this was produced because at the time willys could not keep up with production for the united states military. It has factory lockers and i believe 4.88 gears also has the stock 3 speed and stock twin stick transfer case it has a flat head straight 6 it runs and was driving but when i towed it home with the tow bar it doesnt seem to wanna go into gear i dont know if im doing something wrong or what but it WAS driving will start and run for you but the points need to be set correctly to run perfectly here are some pictures”
