Back in 2002, or thereabouts, Dino launched a website he calls the “GPW – MB – CJ 2A/3A/3B – MC/M38  Visual Reference site.”  It’s got some really useful visual information, including a dataplate page that I used tonight while reviewing a jeep.  Unfortunately, it appears to have been last updated in December of 2006.

One of the coolest images I came across was developed by Darryl of Darryl’s Garage (see below).  Darryl appears to love restoring old vehicles.  He also documents those restorations wells.  Two restorations he has done include a 1943 GPW and a 1943 Bantam Trailer (both of which I’ll highlight tomorrow).  These are excellent overviews.

So, the image that Darryl created is a beautifully done chart that follows the changes, on a monthly basis, to the GPW and MB bodies.  Nice work Darryl!   You can see what he did below (and you can find it on Dino’s site here):

Solid tub has been sand blasted bottom and inside. Swing away spare tire carrier. 6 point cage. Has been in my garage for 8 years. Ran and drove when parked. I began collecting new and used parts off and on with the intention of making a streetable rig. Good for some mild weekend wheeling. Some parts mocked-up on the chassis are GM Saginaw power steering with tilt column. AMC type rear mounted fuel tank includes filler cap insert (still has stock tank under seat). AMC type heater box. Other parts included are: locker spool for rear diff, GM (Blazer) front disc spindles, door frames, Rancho 1 1/2″ springs and shocks. 1″ shackles. Aluminum 15″ wheels. New parts: Spring bushing kit, rear diamond plate, LED taillights, body mount kit (stock height), windshield seal/frame to cowl seal, pedal rubbers, shifter boots. The only body damage is very minor on right front fender. Surface rust”

At the 4wd swap meet  in March, my only purchase was a bottom cover for my TH-350 housing.  I was assured it would fit a TH-350.  I figured, for $10, it was worth a try.

I got it home, cleaned it up, even painting it.  It looked like it should fit.  But alas, no matter how many ways I tried to make it work, the holes didn’t line up.  That will teach me to try something new (as in trying an automatic).  So, my search continues ….. here’s a picture, for what it’s worth 🙂

“I am selling a 1950 Willys CJ3 for my father. He bought it and did a little work to it but doesnt have the time to restore it(or sell it). It has a clear KY title. The jeep is located in Stearns, Ky, 42647.    The Good: runs, drives, brakes work(enough anyway), new alternator, new battery, replaced radiator, new exhaust from the manifold back, tow bar, extra carburator, very little rust(for a 59 year old jeep). The Bad: carburator floods sometimes when you first start it(once its going it goes though), brakes need work(but they will stop you). The Ugly: windshield cracked, paint very rough, hood patched(somebody had a scoop on it), mismatched seats. I am asking $1400.00 O.B.O. “

Jim forwarded me this great story of Harry, who is from Denmark.  Thanks for sharing Jim and Best of Luck Harry!  Here’s Jim’s remarks:

“I sold this 51 M38/CJ3A a few months ago on eBay to a very animated guy in Denmark named Harry. He showed up here in Durango a week ago to pick it up, saying he wanted to drive it to Dallas Texas (1000 miles!) and see a little of the country side. He turned out to be a really great guy; So, I invited him to stay here at the house and prep the jeep for the trip. We rode Harleys on a 300 mile loop through the Colorado mountains, ate, drank, laughed, learned some German and Danish, drank his home made honey wine, smoked a huge brisket for 16 hours, and drank rum around the bonfire at night swapping stories. After a couple days of lube, oil changes, collecting spare parts, tuning, etc,  he jumped in last Friday and drove a nearly 60 year old, un-restored, stock, Willys jeep at 45 mph all the way to Dallas Texas in 3 days. I talked to him this morning. He said it ran great, the only failures being a coil and a starter solenoid.  That’s pretty minor considering what could have gone wrong. He said he got terribly bored crossing the New Mexico desert, so he yelled at cows in Danish as he passed just for entertainment. Harry my new friend, I salute you, you are nuts, you are crazy, you are my kind of people, my hat is off to you!”
