It looks pretty good.

“Pretty cool old CJ3b with restored western snow plow. New hydraulics installed for plow. new AT tires, original ’60s mag wheels. Plows great. Starts and runs easy, but smokes like a chimney. Original motor with many years and miles with spare short block ready to rebuild. New paint about two years old. We’ve sold our place in the mountains, so I have no need for this cool toy any more. I am willing to trade this antique Jeep with plow for a Harley Davidson street glide, or police model electra glide or similar HD motorcycle.”

1947 CJ-2A Lake George, NY **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

1947_cj2a_lakegeorgeUPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay

I got a couple problems with this jeep.  The seller claims the jeep has a “Frame Up Full Restoration”, however given the jeep has no engine or engine related parts, the use of the term full is pretty innaccurate.  Clearly, there’s been no restoration from the frame downward, as the U bolts are rusted, the shocks are greasy, etc.  Also, check out the roll cage; there isn’t even an attempt to place a plate underneath the fiberglass body to sandwich the body at the very least, let alone a proper attempt to tie the roll cage into the frame.  A stock buick 225 engine is rated at about 150 – 160 hp, not 175hp.  The paint job does look very nice and their appear to be a number of other new parts as well.  The opening bid price is $3995.

“Up for highest offer is a 1947 Willys Jeep painted 1965 Ford Poppy Red.  Original frame and Willys overland Drivetrain.Needs motor.   Frame up full restoration.  many aftermarket parts 5000.00 invested . Aftermarket HD fiberglass body and fenders .  many parts to much to list. I’ve found a couple references to the sale of this collection.  Anyone know more? Based on the pic to the right, these don’t appear in great condition.  My guess is that this is over priced.

Here is a link to another reference at Hemmings, where I found the pic to the right.

The $6500 is a buy it now price on eBay.  Apparently the Seller has 2 other offers made via eBay as well.  This appears to be on the boarder between a VEC and an EC CJ-2A.  The seller is only the 2nd owner.  Too bad a floor shifter was swapped into it.  It looks quite nice.

“Here is an original 46 willys cj2a that I bought 7 years ago off the original owener who purchased the jeep new in 1946 and used it on his farm in Easton CT.  The jeep is still in running condition after all those years and only has 27000 miles.  the way you see it is pretty much the way I bought it,  I replaced the fuel pump, plugs , and plug wires.  The jeep starts right up and will even start with the original hand crank!  The motor at times has a skip to it, so it may need the carb rebuilt eventually but does not smoke or knock. The jeep drives great and will do almost 50mph it handles good and does not shimmy at any speed.  It is really fun speed around back roads in this little jeep! At some point it was converted from column shift to floor shift, it is still 6 volt and has its original wiring harness….”

Flat Fender Frenzy in Southern Ohio (other updates not til later)

As I understand it, Flat Fender Frenzy is a weekend event that occurs near the end of August in southern Ohio.  It looks like a fun little get together with some camping, jeeping and relaxing. Sounds like a perfect weekend to me.  You can view a variety of pics from the last few years here.

Dune Buggies

• CATEGORIES: VEEP (VW Jeep), Scamp, Others, Website This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

dunebuggyGrowing up, I had a friend Tim who was my age and lived across the street. Hi father’s name was Bud and he was a machinist for Boeing.  Bud had a magical lathe and valuable skills that created a few of the valuable pieces I needed for putting together my first jeep. Bud also told me one day, near the end of building that first jeep, how he was talking to my Dad and how proud Dad was that I had built the jeep.  Of course, when Bud told me this, I just stared back, as Dad only told me what I was doing wrong … aahh, father and sons.

Anyway, one of Bud’s projects was a beautiful red, sparkly Dune Buggy he built (not the one to the right, but similar).  It was pretty much just a road machine toy.  For those who knew the Renton, Washington, area back in the 70s, Bud would drive his dune buggy down to the middle of the out door retail mall downtown (the one anchored by Sears on one end and QFC on the other) and park it in the middle of the mall (no there were no parking spots there), because he could do it and people loved to check out his Dune Buggy.

One day I was trying to find the body style (it was a flat fenderish hybrid buggy) and I ran across this amazing website called the dunebuggyarchives.com.  It includes a BODY ID Section that is very useful; there are SO many different buggy designs that the person managing this website built a database to help people navigate all the different kinds of buggys.  It also includes a history section that’s interesting.

Of course, there was even the flat fender dune buggy based on the M-38 and I have featured some of them for sale on ewillys.

Builds — John’s 1951 CJ-3A named Brownie

• CATEGORIES: Builds This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

brownie_1951_cj3aJohn has done me a great favor by creating a windshield vent bracket for me, which I will highlight in a subsequent post. THANKS JOHN!  Btw, check out the last picture;  John might just win the award for best use of an old Willys hood.

Here’s what John has to say about his CJ-3A:

“This Willys came from Tenn. where it was bought & used at a const. co. with a trencher on it. I found it at Crawford’s Bargain Barn just north of Springfield Oh. They had used it to pull a hayride wagon. The Odometer had 6854 mi. on it & it was still working.  It was never titled or run on the road. The Body is original, though I did put new hat channels & a rear floor pan in. This poor thing was beat at all 4 corners & everywhere inbetween.  I’m not a body man, but I straighted & painted it.

I did a complete tear down, cleaning & painting everything individually. Most of the fasteners are brass bolts, nuts, & washers, except for stress points. I added 11” brakes and a warn O/D; Everything else is original. The engine, which has SPECIAL casted on it, was bored .40 over, chrome ringed, rotate balanced asm., has ported & polished intake & exhaust ports, and matched manifolds that are ported & polished. This thing runs smooooooth. I built this to be a daily driver;  My wife & I have put over 6000 mi. on it since July 5th, 2008. It took me 9 months to do the complete restoration. We put about 2000 mi on it before i tore it down. It came with a GPW eng. in it.  The serial # put the block in a 42 GPW.  I sold it to a fellow in Pa. that is restoring his 42 GPW.  It’s been named Brownie. It’s Black,Brass,& Brown.”

See pics of the whole family here.  And, see some closeups of Brownie here.

1946 CJ-2A Powell, Oh eBay

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

1946_cj2a_powellUPDATE:  This is back on eBay.  Very nice work!

This appears to be a well done restoration, though not restored to original specs.  In an earlier post, I mentioned the body was probably an aftermarket body, but I was wrong.  The seller indicates this is the original body.  If that’s the case, then the seller has some excellent work on this CJ. Apparently, this about the 15th CJ the seller has built.  See the comments on the ebay ad for additional information about this CJ.

“1946 Restored Willys CJ2A. Jeep restored for daily driver with reliable GM 4 cylinder and 4 speed manual transmission.  12-volt electrical system with battery relocated between seats, brand new “best top” and doors, 6-point roll cage, transfer case and hubs rebuilt in restoration.  Fuel cell in rear cargo area (not under driver’s seat as originally built). Auto meter gauges. Frame is immaculate.  Body and paint exceptional, no rust whatsoever.”

“This 1947 Willys Jeep runs and acts just like its old.  However she’s reliable and has her own personality. Yep just like all the old ones this gal needs a special touch to start, for which I will show the new buyer. Yes, I did drive it as a work vehicle for three years. Its a 6 VOLT system and the engine was overhauled in 1967 which is stamped on the block. Original nameplates are on the body. The transmission shifts great, does not jump gears and does leaks a “little” oil around the seals. The 4×4 transfer case shifts in & out smoothly. The PTO works great and drives the 60’ish Ramsey 12,000 LB winch just fine…. .”

1945_cj2a_libbyUPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

“One 1945 Willys Jeep Cj-2A up for sale. I bought this jeep for my father, but his location no longer allows for this type of vehicle.  The jeep is in need of restoration, but is nearly ready to drive. The jeep has a brand new set of tires.  The stickers haven’t even worn off of them.  They have approximately 30 yards of mileage on them. There is also a new starter installed. The engine turns over, and spark is good.  It is not running due to a probable timing issue.  It backfires, but doesn’t start yet. This jeep is in need of a new wiring harness, along with various and sundry repairs.  The frame is good, the drive system appears to be in running order, although with some use it will probably need some seals and gaskets to be replaced. The tub has quite a bit of rust, as is normal with a 1940’s jeep.  The tailgate and windshield frame fold (no glass in the windshield though), and the attached towbar is usable….”

1945 CJ-2A Bozeman, MT **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

1945_cj2a_bozemanUPDATE:  **SOLD**

This is a beautiful CJ-2A, no doubt about that.  However, if I’m going to spend $19k for a CJ-2A, I would prefer it be restored accurately.  Here’s a few minor issues and thoughts.  If this is a 1945 CJ-2A (only 1,824 made), then I’d expect the serial number to be pretty low. So, with that (and with help from the Cj-2A Page website) here’s a few detail issues:

  1. The color is off.  This is a pale green rather than the two original colors (pasture green or harvest tan).  Additional colors weren’t added to the line until serial number 38221 (mid 1946).
  2. The windshield is a CJ-3A windshield.
  3. The headlight bezels, while they look better in chrome, should be the body color up to serial number 38687
  4. I believe the front hubs are aftermarket, as I think the early CJ-2As came without hubs (I could be wrong about this detail)
  5. I don’t see the cutouts on the driver side (maybe the image obscures them) that should be there on a CJ-2A up to serial number approximately 29500.

There are other details I would want to know more about, however the pictures dont’ show enough information.

“This is a 1945 Willys Jeep CJ-2A. It is owned by mother in-law who has owned it for almost 20 years. She is the second owner. The first owner was an elderly potato farmer in Manhattan, Montana. She has kept this CJ-2A in her garage under a sheet for the past 15 years. It was restored in the mid 1990’s and has been driven about 100 miles per year since. It has the original engine though it has been rebuilt. It is a pale green color insode and out. I have driven this Willys and can assure you it starts right up, doesn’t smoke, and shifts through all of the gears smoothly. It is 100% rust free. This is a very clean, straight Willys that has been very well cared for. $19000”

Rotabuggy or Blitz Buggy — The Flying Jeep

• CATEGORIES: Features, Unusual • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

interior_rotabuggyOn some post somewhere I have an image of the flying jeep.  I recently found a trove of information and images of the Rotabuggy, (actually, I just did a google image search of a rotabuggy) including pictures of a recreated model.  One of the more unusual images is an interior shot, which I show to the right.

From the willys-mb.ru website:

In the early 1940s flight tests had been carried out on a number of one-man gliders known as Rotachutes. During this time Raoul Hafner decided to apply the same principle on a larger-scale military vehicle. On 3 April 1942 the Rotary Wing Section of the Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment AFEE) at Ringway, Manchester, submitted a proposal for the application of the system to the Blitz Buggy or Jeep.

The Unreal Aircraft website records an eye witness account of one flight, which left the driver exhausted.
