UPDATE:  The price rose from $3000 to $3500.  Still no pics. It’s been for sale since last April.

Here’s one I missed that’s in Pullman, Wa.  No pics were included in the Ad.

“I am selling my 1948 willies jeep. Been updated with a buick V-6 and tilt steering wheel. nice interior, seats are in great shape. The top is in good shape some stiches coming loose on the drivers door around the window. Great oversized tires on centerline rims. Diamond plating, spare tire and 2 jerry can fuel cans. The jeep runs great lots of power and would make an awesome restoration project. I was going to restore it but dont have the time. The body is straight and clean, very little surface rust and the floor boards are pretty solid. Also has a full roll bar. Might be a blast to drive this summer, heck who knows join a jeep club and tour the woods. It’s just a fun thing to drive. It has a new master cylinder but needs the slave cylinders replaced. I have checked and they are $8.95/ea. most jeep parts are pretty cheap.  Call for pics.  509-432-3952”

1947_cj2a_grandislandUPDATE:  This jeep is back on ebay.  Now also on Craigslist for $6500.

Here’s a 1947 CJ-2A with lots of pics on eBay. I keep thinking I’ve seen this one, but I couldn’t find it in a search of past posts.  Maybe it was bought and is being resold?

“Seats are Bestop Trailmax.  Low back height fit the small style of the Jeep.  Great Hot Rod look.  I had tried tall back seats with five point harnesses but they were too restricting and did not look proportional.  Lap belts are just the five point harnesses.  I just buckle them around the waist and just let the shoulder belts lay there….”

The History MB-CJ3B Willys-Viasa

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3B, Features, International • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Here’s a good history of the MB-CJ3B Willys-Viasa with a variety of pics.

In the late 50’s, Willys Overland gave the rights to the V.I.A.S.A. firm to allow them exclusively to build the Univesal Jeep in our country. In 1959, the first permit to import parts and machinery is given by the Trade Ministry, in order to assemble the first units  in the V.I.A.S.A’s factory located in Zaragoza. These units weren’t launched until 1960.

It seems that that permit let V.I.A.S.A build the CJ3B model, with different engines and features from the original American model …”

Builds – Jim turns down this fixer upper

• CATEGORIES: Builds • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Succumbing to the Willys sickness, Jim checks out a possible deal, only to discover this mess …  he writes:

“Skunked by trailer trash. “Oh yeah, sure nuff, its real purty, a dang nice old willard jeep, bring youres trailer cuz youins gonna want thisun fer sure.” “Yessir, we wuz just drivin it a few weeks ago, but took some apert to restore it, then decidered to sell er.” “A battery, sum gas and few hours of fun, you could be drivin that afternoon fer sure, only want $1500 fer her and boy howdy it hurts me to let er go for that.”

Lying sack-o-crap, 58 (one way) miles later, trailer in tow and cash in hand, I was, well, lets just say, I was not very happy! Notice the engine is just hanging down between the engine mounts! Whats holding it there? As far as I can tell, the back of the trans hitting the tub and the fear of falling! Jeez, what a waste of time, he offered to come down to $1300 cause he liked me, I wanted to offer a lasting scar and a limp. grrrrr!

It is fun though… Dang this Willys sickness!”

Fred Smith, Rare Jeep Collector

• CATEGORIES: Bantam-FordGP-WillysMA-EarlyJPs, Features, GPA (SEEP) • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

While reading through the extensive history of the half track, I stumbled on the fact that the owner of the rarest of these half tracks was Fred Smith of the UK.  Having recently read that Fred Smith also owned and nicely restored the Ford Budd prototype, I got curious about who Fred Smith is.  At this point, I don’t know anything about him other than he’s got quite the jeep collection.  Here’s an approximate list (this list is a guess based on what I’ve read online):

  1. 1940 Ford Budd Prototype
  2. T-28 Half Track
  3. Willys MT-TUG 6×6
  4. 5 or 6 Ford GPs
  5. Ford GP four wheel steering
  6. Ford GPA (seep)
  7. Willys MA
  8. Willys MB

Not a bad collection!  Apparently, Fred shows these on occasion (or often) at the War and Peace Show at Beltring in Kent, UK.

Builds – Half Tracks, The T-28, T-29 & T-29 E1

• CATEGORIES: Unusual This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

t28_half_trackI’ve never investigated the Half-Tracks and didn’t know much about them.  So, when Brian sent me the link to the Milweb.net website, it was great surprise.  The page is a combination historical overview and successful treasure hunt.  Here’s how the author starts.

“After America had entered the war, one of the most important military bases was the Aleutians in Alaska, since a Japanese attack on the Aleutians. So Alaska became a primary military zone of importance. But with bad weather and a lot of snow, the need for tracked vehicles was important. So the US Army Air Corps got in touch with the Canadian Bombardier Company with the idea to develop a series of tracked vehicles using rubber wheels of large diameter driving a wide, flexible track with metal cross bars. Also the intense aviation activity created enormous difficulties for personnel confronted with a cold climate and bad weather for most part of the year….. ”

You can visit this page to read the entire story.  It’s quite extensive.  The information on how the rebuild was done on the T-28 is equally interesting, including the use of a model A rim.

1952 Willys M38. It is in great condition. Ive owned this jeep since 1989 and have taken great care of it. I have put many hours into modifing and maintaining this Jeep. The body is in great condition, very very solid and very very clean. THere are some spots where there is some rust. All panels where the body meets have a rubber gasket between them. This has helped preserve the jeep over the years and it has done a great job.  The driver side floor board has been replaced years ago and could use a little attention under the seat The floor where the driver puts his feet is in great shape with no rot thru … ”

Problems solved & site back on track

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: AHA!  Somehow, I had changed the file permissions on a single folder, which apparently caused some havoc with the ajax comments, maps, the contact form and more.   It took a while to hunt it down the problem (probably because I was half watching tv too). While messing around, I took the opportunity to do some general maintenance as well, which is always good.

So, I’ll pick back up Monday late afternoon with a story on the very rare MB half-tracks and information about more rare jeeps owned by Fred Smith of the UK.

Builds – Edgar Nave’s “zooped” up MB

• CATEGORIES: MB This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

edgar_mb_europeYeah, I know, the “zooped” part is a stretch, but the site has some cool WWII pics.  It appears the pages related to Edgar are part of a ‘Nave’ family album.  The part of the story I like is that fact that Edgar drove a jeep as a courier and personnel transport later in the war effort in France. His jeep was fixed up with an aluminum housing and a manifold heater, and he says it could outrun any jeep in the outfit. It was quite popular with officers who wanted transportation. They wouldn’t let the jeep go unless he went with it so he got to take a good many trips.  There’s some interesting pictures of stuff found laying  around France (shot down planes for example).

Now, I’m not sure exactly how those features made the jeep faster, if they did, but it’s a good story 🙂

2 Super Terra Mud/ Sand tires Scappoose, Or $325

• CATEGORIES: Tires and Rims This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

tires_scappooseI’d say this is a pretty good price as I dont’ see many of these for sale.

“I have a pair of Goodyear Super Terra tires in great shape. They are 31 inches tall and 15 1/2 inches wide, they are mounted on a set of 15 inch by 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern steel wheels that were just powdercoated. These tires are the 4 ply version which means when the air pressuse is low the sidewalls will flex unlike the 8 ply industrial tires. These tires work great in mud or sand. These will bolt on to Jeeps, Broncos, Fords, Internationals and others that share the same bolt pattern. Thanks Robert 503-543-3644”
