“1956 Willys CJ3-A Jeep. Original condition with L4-134 motor. Has newer Besttop. Brakes, drums, wheel bearings, master cylinder, emergency brake, hoses, belt, springs & shocks are all BRAND NEW! Starts, runs & drives very well. Also have many extra parts such as spare tire with rim, spare tire mounting bracket, side steps, original oil bath type filter, (4) tire chains, new carb rebuild kit, service & parts manuals, etc…”
Most of this CJ-3A looks to be in very good condition. I'm not a fan of the roll bar though. The low reserve of $500 means this will definitely be sold.
"Very rare find! This vehicle is showing 306 miles, yes three hundred six miles. I am assuming someone did a full frame off restoration at some point of this Jeeps life and installed those gauges at that time. I recently acquired it so, I am not sure of previous history. But, it appears to have been restored by some one and put away for some time. The paint looks great except for the burnt part on the hood which is not that noticeable until you get right up on it. It also has some minor rust around bolts and hinges and one bubble pictured on the tub right behind the passenger entry area. The body seems solid, the floors seem solid….. “I’m posting this out of regret but I can’t let it sit much longer. This Overland Willys deservers a new home. It is a 1952 delivery body with a 1959 4WD frame and front end. The tranmission hump was welded in from the 59 into the 52 body (as 4WD was not available in 52 to my knowledge).
It has a 283 small block Chevy V8 as I’m told from a 62 Impalla (engine origin was word of mouth from last owner). A Carter AFB carb. Duel cherry bomb glass pack exhaust. The tranny is the original T90 that was rebuilt about 4k ago with the custom clutch. The tranfer case was not rebuilt but would take minimal work with the basics….

It’s 1962, open the passenger door, a 60/40 split! The 40 jumps completely out of the way, making it easy to load into the rear bench seats of this classic 2 door model. Whats this? Another 60/40 split, need something out of the back? No problem, just go get it! And oh by the way, there’s more leg room in the back seat of this vehicle then any modern SUV. Flip the rear seats forward, open it’s real “Tail Gate” and it’s just begging for 4 Longboards and some sleeping bags. In 1962 the Wagon was powered by a brand new 6 cylinder 230ci Tornado. A very unique engine, intended to be reliable and deliver plenty of low end torque. Some would say it was the perfect engine for a Jeep!”
I’ve located some fiberglass fenders along with a grille, a body, and a tail gate for $600. While a decade old, these parts never been installed, drilled, or painted. The seller says he bought these parts brand new and that they were designed for a street application, so they are a little heavier duty than the light racing bodies. That sounded fine to me, so sometime next week I’m gonna head to Oregon to check them out. The one thing this package lacks is a hood.
These were actually for sale about a year and a half ago. The craigslist ad had very little info and didn’t list any keywords, so it was a tough ad to find unless you specifically typed ‘flatfender’ into the search field. Also, it was winter time and, at least for me, getting over the snowy passes wasn’t worth the effort. After being frustrated in my fender search (metal or fiberglass), Yesterday I decided to give him a call. Sure enough, he still had everything sitting in his garage.
Because of this, I will continue to list expired Craigslists ads for a while since the sellers may not have been able to get rid of their jeep or parts, but got tired of relisting their stuff. And, if I can get it, I’ll always list the seller’s contact info if they provide it.
To make me feel better about cutting my brake line, Mitch sent me this series of images of him rolling his jeep last year at Rimrock (Washington State) on 'flat' ground. It kind of looks like Mitch's jeep rolled over and played dead to get out of the mud. Another way to look at it is that, if you are going to roll over, smarter to do it on flat ground rather than on a steep hill …. but right in front of a no parking sign? (see last pic)
Here's Mitch's take on it:
"Here's the series of pics…..That mud was real thick….In the process of rocking it back and forth I was making good progress of getting out….When the front end finally pulled the rear out of the hole, it immediately slid to the left and dropped the left front tire off the little ledge you can barely see in the pics. I had enough momentum and it was enough of a drop that the jeep just slowly flopped on the left side. No damage at all. The cage and tires were the only things that touched ground."
While you can purchase a dual shifting unit from Novak for your Dana 20, it's also possible to fashion one from scratch. Note that I've never used the dual shifter on a Dana 20 transfercase without removing the center pins that move between the shift rods in the the shifting tower. To remove the pins, you have to remove the shift levers, drill out the plugs on the sides (note where the red gasket sealant is on the side of the shift tower, and then slip out the oblong pins (they are elongated metal balls). With these removed, you can push and pull the levers all you want (but don't try running high range in the front and low range in the back unless you feel the need to break something).

These are rare enough that this is a fantastic price even if the brakes need a little work.

This jeep has a variety of updates. It's likely that if you did all these upgrades the cost of the jeep would probably come out around the above price.

Here's a garage find. The starting bid of $3200 is a bit high considering this hasn't been run in a while.

This seems like a reasonable price for an updated, trail ready jeep. The windshield looks like it’s a CJ-3A windshield, but it is flat. I wonder if there was some custom work done on it.

Here's an interesting ad for someone who needs help with their hurricane 6 engine. Never worked with them myself.

There was a question about how the shifting in my transfer case works. (http://www.ewillys.com/?p=797)
The shifting might seem unusual, but it's not. What's unusual is that I have removed the pins from the shifting tower that slide back and forth between the shift rods. This allows for more shifting options. To take advantage of those options, I installed two rather than one stick. You can see that here in this video I made.
Here's an image the also demonstrates how the shifting works. Please note if it doesn't make sense:-)
Final Update: Originally priced at $2800, the seller dropped the price to $1000, but changed the ad so that it was difficult to find. Eventually, the seller made good on his claim and it was given to the Youth Ranch (I missed it by two days, otherwise I would have bought it for $1000). I haven’t seen it since.

Not many specifics on this flattie. I’m gonna bet this is a CJ-3A. Looks pretty old school, especially those tires. From this pic it appears the front springs are reversed.

Brian sent me some updated pictures of his CJ-3B project. He just finished reversing the springs in the front. As a part of that reversal, he had to replace the front of the frame. After conquering this task, he turned his attention to the rear differential, only to discover a big problem (which he'll update all of us about as he progresses through the issue).
Brian explains more below about his spring reversal experience below ….
"I wanted to do a spring reversal so I started by getting some universal after market parts to make things a little easier. Then I bought a early Cj5 frame for the front 8 inches then sold off a chrome bumper and ring and pinion at a small profit.
Here's what I did to lengthen the frame.
I cut a block to use as an template to cut off the front of the 3b frame. (Stan H. — from the Wandering Willys Jeep Club — always said to cut at a 45 degree angle though the frame.) I did the same with the pieces to be added. They lined up really nice.
Yesterday I made a first pass at a design for the gauges on the dashboard. As a part of that exercise, I tried to find a space for the data plate I have. The data plate is original to the CJ-3A I have and in good shape, except that it is faded, so it is hard to read. In fact, I tried to scan it into my scanner and the scanner couldn't pick up the words or pictures at all. After pondering the situation, I decided to recreate a data plate graphic and take it into a print shop to see if I can make a raise print or sticker of some kind. As part of the customization, I've tried to recreate the fonts as closely as possible, however, much to my surprise, the data plate uses several different fonts, some of which are the same font but stretched or bolded or both. Also, I've updated the data plate to better reflect the drive train I have installed.
Here's the current favorite mockup so far (note the font kerning and arrangement will be more precise on the final high resolution version).
When some one gives you a jeep for free and you have to pull the jeep out of the mud to start rebuilding it, you know you are going to have your hands full. Irwin Arnstein nicely revives this old Jeep.
"When my brother’s neighbor T.J. generously gave me his old 1959 1-ton truck, I felt that I ought to do a good job with it and show it to him. As you could see on my Gallery page, it brought T.J. a bit of pleasure to see his truck ready for another 46 years of work. A few months later (and I think after his wife got on him to clean the place up) he gave me his 1947 CJ2A Willys Universal Jeep.
When I got the truck, I had no idea that the Jeep would soon get so lonely that it spoke to T.J. about rejoining its old compatriot. I wasn’t so keen to do the jeep but when my brother offered to help, I decided "Why not — if it wasn’t a complete junk pile."
Can't say I saw this coming … a Mail Jeep Drag Racer? For $15k no less! I'm sure they broke the mold after they build this one. Note that it is still street legal, which means you can still deliver the mail with it, especially since it is still right hand drive!

I made excellent progress yesterday completing and installing a variety of parts (including the custom steering column rod and u joints, additional hydraulic lines, electric fuel pump, fuel line to carburetor). Unfortunately, in the midst of all this success, I screwed up.
For reasons that still baffle me, I mistook the rear brake line (which isn't hooked up to the master cylinder yet — note the pathetic attempt at an excuse) for the gas line to the tank (which isn't there at all). Despite the fact that they are different size lines and despite the fact that the brake line has the threaded nut at the end (which somehow I didn't notice), I managed to mistake the brake line for the gas line. Even right after I cut it I didn't realize my mistake (clearly my mind was elsewhere!).
The good news is that I can still take it off relatively easily and get it reflared and it shouldn't cost more than a few dollars — Andy's Supply, here I come. Though it's now shorter, fortunately it's still long enough to use — in fact, it might even work better as a slightly shorter length.
As I noted in my previous power steering post, after realizing that ordering through Summit Racing would cost $161 before shipping I thought I'd go down to a local hydraulics place, Andy's Supply, and see what they could do for me. Since they carried the Earl's products as well, it made comparing prices very easy.
After explaining what i wanted to do (see rough schematic to the right), I quickly discovered they could save me money in a couple ways. First, they were willing to cut my supply side line down for nothing so that it would hook to the inside of the cross member. That saved me 2 90 degree turns, 2 feet of hose (about $50 total). Second, I only had to order 14" of expensive tubing rather than the minimum 3ft from Summit. Finally, they saved me money by making sure I had the right parts the first time, so i didn't have to return anything. While their parts prices were slightly higher than Summit's, because they saved me money in other places, the bill was only $116.
Putting the pieces together was relatively easy. Below the pieces are laid out (with a piece of metal acting as the cross member).
The buy it now and beginning bid prices are a bit high. There's been enough minor mods that this isn't a collector's piece (as suggested by the seller) either. But, appears to be a solid jeep in good condition.
"Wow look at this !! A Black 1948 Willy's Jeep CJ3-A in perfect condition. This vehicle has a recently rebuilt 4cyl F-head motor, newly upholstered front and rear seats, new tires, new top. This Jeep has been well taken care of and needs nothing. It would make a great collectors piece or a great daily driver for anyone. We are down sizing our vehicles and the "toys" have to go first so take advantage of this ready to go 4×4 adventure and go have some fun!!
