3 Flat Fender Projects Wenatchee, Wa

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A, CJ-3A This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

There’s a variety of parts and projects here with prices that vary.

“1st jeep has the most potential and while the picture does not show it, it has a grille and other parts that can be put together to make a good one. It has rear diamond plate for the corners and diamond plate for the sides. It does have a windshield that needs put together. No seats or titles on any of them. It has saginaw front end which is optional I will keep it if you want to dicker. If you plan to install a bigger engine I will keep the engine and transmission and transfer case too. Engine is a L head than turns over by hand but someone got the carb and starter. It has a roll bar of sorts. Price depends on if you want the saginaw and engine. $300 with out all that. $650 with all that.

2nd jeep is a basket case and frames front has cracked totally off. But it has a round cross bar that can be used on the first jeep that some idiot cut off the original and put L iron to fit the saginaw on it. Or you can weld it back together and start a rebuild of a second jeep. it has axles but no power plant or transmission or transfer case. $150 for it.

The third is just a body and hood. It was a rare long body that someone cut down to a CJ3A size. Welds need to be finished on that part. Body could be used on one of the other two if you wanted. Might have another windshield in need of repair for it too. $200 for it.

As I said no titles but they can be gotten. I believe data tags are on one at least. I have extrea transfer cases that may need rebuild for $100. And some other extra parts for those that buy all three of them. Including axles. Have other small parts that I will make deal on if you buy all. I just need parts to finish my 2A. Might consider trading for things I need for the 2A like seats or guns or other old interesting item. Especially jeep PTO’s for the front and back or an overdrive. Or Jeepster parts from 48 and 49. I am keeping the roll cage for the 3A for now. But with the right offer will sell it too. It is one that is done well with sides that fit the contour of the CJ2 and 3A frame. $450. These are projects as you can see. And as I said I have hundreds of various small parts too for sale. And for the right trade or take all I will think about a better deal. Also have a F head that needs gone through. It used to turn over by hand but now doesn’t. has a regular oil filter system on it for spinning oil filters and upgraded carb. Long story. $250. Had it in a flat fender and it ran then.

Damn, what a lucky kid this guy was … I’m gonna have to talk to mom and dad about this! I had to wait until I was 18 for my first ‘real’ jeep!

Builds: Dan updates us on his Grandfather’s Jeep

• CATEGORIES: Builds, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This is a continuing series on Dan’s efforts to rebuild his Grandfather’s jeep. Here’s the previous post. [Editor’s note – that looks like a steal at $100.  Running and complete!]

Dan writes, “Sometime in the 1960’s my grandfather’s friend purchased a new Jeep and immediately swapped out the little four banger for a V8. My grandfather bought the new (at the time) 134 F head from his friend and installed it in his own 1955 CJ5 replacing the tired original 134. Over the years this second engine was rebuilt three or four times.

V6-2At one point in time my grandfather had a V6 of some kind sitting in the garage that was supposed to go into the Jeep. Unfortunately when he made the move from Colorado to Washington State, the V6 was left behind.

Today I just came home with an engine for the old CJ5. It’s a Kaiser odd-fire Dauntless V6. I found it behind a barn in a Jeepster C101 sporting a Volkswagen Bug body. (It was the ugliest “Jeep” I have ever seen). But the engine was still in tact and was running when parked. I made the guy an offer for $100. He pulled the engine and had it sitting on a pallet for me the next week. I took home everything from the radiator to the bell housing. He wanted the transmission which is fine with me. Someone had painted the valve covers red but you can see the original paint underneath. There was a power steering pump scabbed on which I will remove since I have a manual Saginaw box. It will be nice to breath the life into the CJ5 that my grandfather had wanted.

V6 Valve-Cover-StampingOriginally, I had responded to a Craigslist add for a set of fenders. As it turned out I came home with a set of front fenders, a nice Koenig steel hard top model 550, and a Dauntless V6. He still has a Koenig PTO winch that I’m drooling over, but they don’t fit too well next to a Saginaw box.

I have attached a few pictures of the V6. In one of them you can catch a glimpse of the old CJ5 in the garage.

1947 CJ-2A Lake George, NY **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

1947_cj2a_lakegeorgeUPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay

I got a couple problems with this jeep.  The seller claims the jeep has a “Frame Up Full Restoration”, however given the jeep has no engine or engine related parts, the use of the term full is pretty innaccurate.  Clearly, there’s been no restoration from the frame downward, as the U bolts are rusted, the shocks are greasy, etc.  Also, check out the roll cage; there isn’t even an attempt to place a plate underneath the fiberglass body to sandwich the body at the very least, let alone a proper attempt to tie the roll cage into the frame.  A stock buick 225 engine is rated at about 150 – 160 hp, not 175hp.  The paint job does look very nice and their appear to be a number of other new parts as well.  The opening bid price is $3995.

“Up for highest offer is a 1947 Willys Jeep painted 1965 Ford Poppy Red.  Original frame and Willys overland Drivetrain.Needs motor.   Frame up full restoration.  many aftermarket parts 5000.00 invested . Aftermarket HD fiberglass body and fenders .  many parts to much to list. Comes with 1970 Jeepster Commando with Buick Dauntless running V6 engine.     You will need to buy the V6 swap kit to link the Buick V6 to the T90 transmission….”

Upgrading / Changing brakes on older jeeps

• CATEGORIES: How To This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Consider this a draft post that I’ll be expanding.

Jim mentioned in one of his emails to me that he once test drove (and purchased) a CJ-2A with stock brakes that stopped so fast, it surprised him.

cj2a-187Jim wrote, “The old guy I bought this sweet (seen to the right) all original 2A from laughed at me when I test drove it. I hit the brakes and about put my face through the glass, not normal for a Willys right? I asked what he had done, I had already looked underneath and knew it had stock drums. He laughed and said youll figure it out young man. Master cylinder was stock, brakes were stock but this thing would stop on a dime like no willys I had ever seen. Under the passenger side, I found a 1950s era huge vacumn powered brake booster, done so well it looked like a factory item, just brilliant!”

vacuum_brake_boosterThat got me looking around the internet and found a great page on the CJ-3B site about some power boosters that were offered as early accessories on CJ-3Bs. To the right is an image of a brake booster from the CJ-3B site.  These boosters were used along with the stock 9″ brakes.  There’s debate on the CJ-3B site about the wisdom of using the boosters with the 9″ brakes due to heat build up issues.   It’s an interesting solution if you only use your jeep occasionally, but probably not the best solution if you are going to use it often.

The JP website has a nice historical look at jeeps and brakes.  As 4x4wire.com puts it, “The stock brakes on a CJ-2A are frightening by modern day standards. They use a single cylinder master cylinder that has no redundancy and small drums all around. ”  So, there’s good reason to update those older brakes if you plan on seriously driving your older jeep.  There’s a variety of web page “how to’s” on upgrading brakes on older jeeps.   I’ll have to do some web searching to find the good ones, but here’s a draft list of options (and the options could vary depending on the front and back housing you run):

  1. STOCK BRAKES: Stick with your stock brakes, stock pedals and stock master cylinder.
  2. BOSTER PUMP: Add the booster pump.  Here’s info about the booster pump.
  3. SINGLE TO DUAL MASTER CYLINDER: Change your single master cylinder to a dual master cylinder
  4. 10″ BRAKES: Upgrade to 10″ brakes.  I had 10″ brakes on my Dana 44 that I pulled off a mail jeep.  I’m not sure where you find 10″ backing plates from the front.
  5. 11″  BRAKES: Put on 11″ brakes.  You have a couple options, you can use 11″ backing plates from a 60’s J-10 or redrill later-model backing plates (such at CJ-5 or CJ-7 backing plates from mid 70s).  Here’s a discussion of both options from the CJ-2A site.
  6. HYDRO-VAC: Install a Hydro-vac unit.  I ran across this as part of the sale of a jeep.  Apparently, these little devices were used on Trucks and Buses to improve hydraulic pressure. Here’s an image of one and more info.
  7. EARLY DISC BRAKES: Put on disc brakes from a mid 70’s chev truck. Here’s more information on it.  & Here’s a great overview from a Pirate 4×4 installation of disc brakes on a ’47 CJ-2A.
  8. LATER DISC BRAKES: Put disc brakes on the front from a late 70’s early 80’s CJ-5 or 7 (if you are running a dana 30).  Though the knuckles for a Dana 30 from a drum and a disc might look similar, they have slightly different outside bearings and slightly different knuckle shapes.  So, if you use a disc brake setup on a knuckle designed for drums, you’ll need to grind a little off the back of the knuckle.  Here’s one link on the subjectHere’s another Dana 30 drum to disc swap discussion.

1953 CJ-3B Newport, Wa **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3B This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was $1750.   I think this is a good deal.

This ad caught my interest because I’d never heard of Newport, Washington.  Newport is located north of Spokane and west of Sand Point, Idaho.  Looks like a beautiful place.

The jeep is interesting too.  The drive train has been modernized and the jeep outfitted with a modern cage. The engine probably has some extra spunk for a v-6, but bored 60 over suggests that it might not have a ton of life left.

“1953, Complete running gear out of 1968 Jeepster Commando, 3:73 gears, model 27 up front has a 44 in the back, model 18 transfer case, turbo 400 with shift kit, 225 V6 punched over 40 headers and turbo mufflers, aluminum high rise with 4 barrel carb, saginaw power steering, 2 inch lift kit, we have a few spare parts that go with it. Hasn’t been started in three or for years. missing coil and ballast resister. Has a nice full cage. Front and rear seats out of CJ-7”
