The King and the Whirly Bird was written by Mabel Watts in 1969. It’s supposed to include a reference/picture to the “royal jeep”. Whether there really is a jeep, it’s a cute sounding book.
“This hardcover book was writtten by Mabel Watts, illustrated by Harold Berson. Published by Parents’ Magazine Press, copyright 1969.
Once there was a king who had a wonderful kind of flying machine called a whirlybird. He had a pilot named Joe who could fly the machine, but the king would not use the machine at all. “Birds fly. I’m not a bird!” said the king. He had to travel a lot so he used the coach or rode the stallion. He even tried the rickety old royal train, and the old steamship, and finally the royal jeep. None of those methods of travel worked very well. Finally, Joe the pilot convinced the king to try the whirlybird. “This is the way to travel! The whirlybird is the best!” said the king.
Excellent condition.”
Scott spotted this good price on a SAS in WWII Book at Amazon. If you ever had any interest in the SAS, you might check out this book. I’ve ordered a copy.

“This auction is for a 1943 book filled with cartoons about WWII. It is titled “Jeeps and Jests” by Bruce Bairnsfather. The book has cartoons on every page– about 60 pages in all. The condition of the book is good. The binding is solid and there are no rips. The main flaw is that there are some faint spots on the covers and scattered in the book.”

“Here is a beautiful book that pays tribute to WW II era GPW military Jeeps, made by Ford Motor Co. The book features one particular jeep, S/No.242581, that has been meticulously restored. It was produced in 1997, as a special gift pack for the 20th anniversary of “4X4 magazine”, a Japanese publication. Only 2000 were published, this is #1129.
The Book is a beautifully made hardcover, with OD green canvas wrapped covers, and brass plate title on the front (similar to the Jeep ID plate). It measures 12″ by 11″ and has 132 pages of text, photos, and tech information. All text is written in English and Japanese. The book has sections with detailed photos of the Engine, Power train, Suspension, Frame, Interior, Tools & accessories. There are sections on Specifications, and Restoration notes. There are also many full page views of the complete vehicle. The photos are all studio quality with white background, printed on thick photo quality pages.
The book is packaged in a fitted wooden box with a hinged lid, The box also has a brass title plate, and a brass copy of the original ID plate from S/No.242581. Included is the cardboard shipping box, a mouse pad, and a package of post cards. Everything is in “as new” condition, the 3 brass plates still have their plastic sheet anti-tarnish covers, the post cards are still sealed, there is no address or writing on the cardboard shipping box.”
I’ve never heard of this book. Jack Townend wrote a variety of children’s stories.

THE STORY CENTRES AROUND A JEEP CALLED JENNY WHO WAS MADE IN THE COLOUR PINK INSTEAD OF GREEN AND ALL THE OTHER JEEPS DIDN’T LIKE HER! THEN ONE DAY ALL THE JEEPS SET OF FOR ITALY AND ALL THE GREEN JEEPS TRIED TO STOP JENNY FROM GETTING ON THE SHIP BUT SHE MADE IT. I stumbled across this book written by French Author Joe Ceurvorst based on a trip in 1956. I have found two different covers for it (shown below). Most copies seem to be in the UK. The author was traveling around Africa about the same time as Dorothy and Louise.
Apparently, the writers of the Catholic Herald weren’t uber fans of the book. Their review, in full, from March 9th, 1956, goes like this:
It may seem virtually impossible today to find real adventure, the French author of this book found it by irresponsibly taking an old liberation jeep, with a single passenger and a dog, on a round-African trip from Algiers to the Gulf of Guinea, thence to Lake Victoria, and back to Tunis via Cairo.
Our surprise, however, at his still being alive is greater than at the revelations of his story. It was worth writing, but the account is superficial. Good reading, perhaps. for a dull and oversafe train journey.
