Carl Buehler of Verona, New Jersey, wrote to the president saying that he had been promised a jeep ride for selling war bonds and that such promise had not been kept. The jeep showed up by presidential order, driven by Major Arthur J. Lonegren and here we see the 10-year-old boy getting his much desired jeep-ride. Photo measures 7.75 x 6.25 inches. In 1943, Carl was honored for his 1942 efforts when he joined a New York City parade in 1943. Later, in 1944, Carl was back in the papers as a twelve-year-old hoping to break his previous war bond drive effort.

The writing on this photo indicates this jeep with a wood top was located in Europe. It was odd enough I thought I’d buy the photo, which was on eBay.

This photo appears to have been published as part of Eisenhower’s 1948 book “Crusade in Europe”.
“Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower in a jeep at front line positions in France in September, 1944 . . . Get. Eisenhower’s own book of the war, “Crusade in Europe,” to be published Nov. 22, will be a treat to military men in studying the strategy of the war and its campaigns, but perhaps the most interesting part of it to the layman is his inside estimate of the war leaders. . .”

This August 08, 1945, photo shows Shirley Watts driving the first CJ-2A to reach Miami.
