Looks cold, but that’s not surprising given this was taken a week before Christmas.
“1943 Press Photo US Military Jeeps in Alaskan Maneuvers. This is an original press photo. Photo measures 8.5 x 6.75 inches. Photo is dated 12-18-1943.”
Just this update today. Once again, thanks to Charles for these photos.
A Nordhouse, un conducteur du RBFM (Régiment Blindé de Fusiliers Marins) de la 2e DB (Division Blindée) s’est assoupi dans sa jeep.
This photo from the November 21, 1957, issue of the Spokesman-Review shows Ben Carlin and Half Safe following his trip around the world.
A Happy Thanksgiving Holiday of everyone out there. I shall be thankful for jeeps today! Apparently, one Major E.P. Hogan was also thankful for these unique vehicles, so much so that he wrote an article for the Sep/Oct 1944 issue of Army Ordnance called The Jeep In Action: Some Adventures of the Army’s Ubiquitous Vehicle. It’s a pretty interesting read. i’ve included it in its entirety for your holiday pleasure. Click on the images to more easily read the article.
Not all the doctor appointments are without value to eWillys. We recently went downtown for an ultrasound on Ann’s heart. While walking down a hall, I spotted this parade photo, taken in downtown Pasco, Washington. I’m guessing it was taken during the early 1940s, because it features a bunch of Slat Grille MBs.
The Sunrays were a short-lived musical group from California in the mid-60s. Below is a proof sheet with photos of them on a CJ-5 they bought.
Just this update today, courtesy of Charles.
What a mess!
“1944 Press Photo Jeep stuck in mud at Ledo Road between China and Burma. This is an original press photo. Photo measures 9 x 7.25inches. Photo is dated 08-04-1944.”
This photo shows Canadian soldiers carrying French civilians to safety near Falaise, France.
““approx. 5″ x 6″ Typewriter Release glued to back of photograph Stae Department issued 1944 Very good vintage condition with only minor waves or creases if any Please see images”
I found this great old mailer on eBay. It was likely published at the end of WWII, as there are no references to the CJ-2A. You can learn more about Hyman Berg here.
Here’s the front side of the mailer:
I’ve split the front of the mailer into sections so it can be better seen. This part shows a closeup of the front and back of mailer when folded:
British soldiers are being transported over the river Orne.

UPDATE: Was on eBay.
For some reason the Willys Export company advertised the Cargo & Personnel Carrier in a German Magazine. Seller lists this as a 1950 magazine. Given the early grille, this may well be the case. This is really an interesting piece.
“Willys Overland Export Co. Universal Jeep + Dorndorf – Orig. Anzeigen von 1950. Original Seite aus einem alten Magazine.”
These two Ads from a 1950 German magazine show off the CJ-3A.
This edition of the Toledo Blade celebrated the 50th anniversary of Willys Overland. It includes some jeep photos. It isn’t cheap.
“Rare find, this issue was devoted to the Willys Overland Co, celebrating 50 years of business. The entire paper has celebratory ads to the Willys Co. Includes history of the co, as well as advertisements for Jeep and Willys cars. Has both sections, 48 pages. Really nice shape for a newspaper this old.”
This May 10, 1943, article from The Telegraph shares the news that New Hampshire kids raised enough money through stamp and bond sales to purchase 92 jeeps for the US Forces.
Must have been a rough ride in that MB Slat Grille.
“Original Press Photo. 1942- U.S. troops drive a Willys MB over railway ties during a 10 day reconnaissance trip along the North Atlantic coastline. Photo measures approx. 7″ x 9″”
Based on the side of this, I’d guess this was a Manchester (NH?) Fire Jeep.
“Original Vintage Snapshot Photo Fire Department Willys Jeep CJ w/ Ladder Size is 3.5×3.5″ inches.”
Nice bit of Texas history here.
“An original press photo of Texas Governor Beauford Jester Lee Vanderpool Amphibious Jeep. Photo measures 7 x 9 inches and is dated 8/29/1946.”
The photo is dated 12/09/no year. I suspect this is photo from a mid 1950s South Padre Island Jeep Jamboree in Texas.
“This is an original press photo. This rugged stretch was a typical part of the obstacle course “Over hill, over Dale, we will hit the dusty trail —-” Only here the dusty trail appears to hit back! This is a typical stretch of the rugged terrain through which the Jeeps traveled in the obstacle course event of the jeep jamboree. Autos – Jeeps Photo measures 10 x 8.25inches. Photo is dated 12-09-NONE.”
Mike shared this pic of a VW he loaded in the back of a wagon many years ago. I’m still hoping for an explanation :-). To paraphrase the USPS, if it fits it ships?
Patrick spotted a photo of Grace Kelly on the front of a CJ-3A, which led me to find other photos. The photo shoot was part of a fundraiser for the Stevens School, the high school from which she graduated. Grace and the Jeep are in front of her childhood home. The photo was taken shortly after her sudden rise to fame in her first big movie role, High Noon with Gary Cooper. That set her on the path to fame and, several years later, to marrying Prince Rainier of Monaco.
Another early Press Photo
“This is an original press photo. Post war jeep adapted for peacetime work.Photo measures 10 x 8inches. Photo is dated 07-10-1945.”
