Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Stephen Stokes was kind enough to share this photo (via David Watson). It shows Stephen’s father, Fredrick Stokes, during his time in Japan with the US Army. The photo was taken between 1946-1948. If the bumper is accurate, it looks to be a GPW.

Shepard went on to write an article for Wide World Magazine titled First to Sail the Sahara. An 1800 mile journey with his wife and family in a sand yacht over the Desert in 1956 (it’s also been republished as a book, but this may be a modern item). The second, Sahara Adventure, is an actual book and probably a more complete account of the trip. I’ve just bought it, so I’ll report on it once I read it.
In many places the ‘Jeep’ was the center of attraction.

This photo of a DJ-3A Dispatcher at an airfield shows they went to work for the airlines not long after they began production. This was published in a 1956 issue of Globetrotter Magazine.
Based on the back, this might have been taken in the Spokane area.

The seller lists this as being a Korean War era photo. Though the jeep appears to be an M-38, I doubt this is from the Korean War. The jeep shown has a license plate on the back.

I’ve seen this photo before, but never an original press photo.

I thought this 1964 photo of what appears to be a stock CJ-3A somewhere in southeast Asia with full-floating rear hubs was surprising to see. Is this something that Willys Export offered?

This August 25, 1958, article in the Sydney Morning Herald welcomed jeep manufacturing to Australia. The in-depth articles cover quite a bit of jeep history. The ads are interesting, too. Because the articles, photos, and ads are so interconnected, I’ve included full-page reproductions of the pages rather than try to slice them up to make them web friendly. There is also a useful list of jeep dealers for anyone tracking the history of jeeps in the state of New South Wales.
