Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Hugh forwarded this photo. It looks to me to be very similar to the unidentified jeep (rusted white and blue one) from France at this link: http://cj3b.info/Toys/RidingToysID.html It’s got the high hood, the right wheels, a similar seat and more.

Given the winter weather, Colin thought this would be an appropriate photograph to post. He writes:
I have attached a photo taken in December, 1967, in Holbrook, AZ. Arizona received record snowfall over the entire state, with Flagstaff receiving about 8 feet of snow over a 40 hour period. The snow just about paralyzed the state. The photo shows Arizona Highway Patrol Officer Paul Palmer sitting on the hood of Highway Patrol Officer Carlton Hill’s 1959 Jeep Station wagon. Both Paul and Carlton (as well as myself) are retired and Carlton still has that Jeep wagon. In that storm, Holbrook had about 3 ½ feet of snow. In southern Arizona, where I was, we had about the same, 3 ½ feet.

Not a great day for driving a jeep. This 1950 photo of Nightmare Alley was shot as these troops retreated. The temperature was estimated at -40 degrees. Read more about this LIfe Magazine photo here.

U.S. Marine crouching down next to his jeep while leading a convoy of vehicles during the 1st Marine Division’s retreat down canyon road they called “Nightmare Alley,” after being cut off by the Red Chinese and under fire from nearby hills in December 1950.
Doug forwarded this eBay photo that references Operation Deepfreeze. Given the number “14” is written on the side of the jeep it would suggest there were other jeeps there, too. Here’s a link to a few images on G503 from Life Magazine.

Marc found this photo. The jeep in this photo has some unusual features. Obviously, the bumper is odd. It may have a Japanese license plate. The top is odd (wish we could see more of it) and it appear to have a 2nd hood latch that is located in an unusual spot.

Marc found this photograph. These jeeps are being shipped from NJ to Capetown, South Africa. The caption notes that vehicles are getting shipped internationally, despite the need for vehicles in the US.

Doug had some more (over a thousand) photos digitized from a variety of southeast Asian places from the 50s and 60s and 70s. They were taken by a man who was in the Navy and seems to have traveled or lived all over. Doug has posted over a thousand pictures on Flickr. There are both location photos and photos of business cards, which I found interesting.

You might remember this photo that was posted on eWillys in early November. The movie playing at the theatre was “Destination Vietnam”. 1968 Subic Bay, Philippines (Original Photo)
Life magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith too this photo on Mariana Island of Saipan during the summer of 1944. You can see more photos at dailymail.co.uk’s site. As you can see, both of these jeeps are MB Slatgrilles. Interesting that the spares are stored in the same place used later by the CJs.
Given the column shift and the single speedometer, I think this is a DJ-3A.

Lee Balterman was an American photographer best known for his photographs portraying the city and people of Chicago. After briefly studying drawing and painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Balterman enlisted in the US Army Reserves and was stationed in England and France, where he worked as a hospital aide and later an an official photographer. After his discharge in 1947, he returned to Chicago, where he opened his studio and worked on assignments for publications such as Life, Time, Sports Illustrated and Fortune magazines. He died in Chicago in 2012.”

Published in the April 26, 1945, issue of the IBT, this jeep earned a camel hump by successfully flying (in a plane) over the Burma hump. Ann’s grandfather was a Pilot who flew and died flying the hump during WWII.
