The Former Pittle Power

• CATEGORIES: Builds, Features, News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I just got some pics from the owner (who shall remain nameless until he sends me his name 🙂 ) of the jeep formerly known as Pittle Power (I remember it as Piddle Power though).   I don't remember the history of the Jeep prior to Jim and Patty Carter purchasing it, but I believe they purchased it so their growing boys, Tim and Steve, wouldn't have to squish themselves into the back of Otis.  They purchased a stock CJ-3A, installed a chev 4cyl and attached desert dogs.   Otherwise (I'm told) they left everything else stock.  Pittle might not have had much power (hence the name), but it could go 99% of the places the modified WWJC jeeps could go.

The Carter's had a habit of naming all their vehicles.  There was Otis (the jeep), tote-us (the jeep trailer), Brutus (their first motorhome) and more.

Our To-Be-Named contributor writes:

"The Jeep I bought was owned by Jim Carter(original member of the WWJC). The race name was Pittle Power. Skip Baird helped me with my first swap with a V-6 and a top loader. Al Hamilton and I became very close infact I still have one of his pups Mandy she is a very stubborn German Shorthair."

Editor's note:  To the right is the only picture I have of Pittle Power from 1983 (and it's only the hind quarter) hidden behind Danny's CJ-5.  While the Pittle Power was never actually raced, I do remember a club trip to Liberty Trail one weekend.  After we made camp, Tim Carter decided he wanted to head down to the store and asked me to ride shotgun (somehow he knew there was a remote store at the bottom of the hill we were camped on). So, he drove me down that hill in Pittle Power, a ride I remember vividly because we were travelling sideways down the constantly turning gravel road for a good portion of it.    Come to think of it, one time Tim took me for a ride in his late 60's camaro and we travelled sideways heading onto the cloverleaf on ramp to I-405.  Maybe Tim always travelled sideways or I just brought it out of him.

Fiberglass Body and Grille

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit, Body Parts, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Here's a few pictures of the Body and Grille I grabbed while down in Springfield, Oregon a couple of days ago. I need to get a few better pics of it.  I've got it listed for $450 on Craigslist.

The outside of the body is in excellent shape and would make a great racing shell for PNW4WDA racing. The interior of the body is well designed and strong and could make a good jeeping/street body, however the plywood attached to the bottom is bad in spots, but could be fixed pretty easily.  Also, the firewall has an extra large opening that needs to be closed.  Otherwise, the body looks straight and is pretty light.

1967 CJ-5 Pennsylvania eBay

• CATEGORIES: CJ5 This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This is an unusual CJ-5 package.

"You are bidding on a 1967 Jeep-A-Trench. This trencher is a bit unusual because it has a factory V/6 engine and 4 speed transmission. This Jeep is very complete and unmolested. It does however require a complete restoration. The engine turns over but I have never heard it run. The body has typical rust in the floors and tool box and there are dents and dings."

Year? CJ-3A Granite Falls, Wa $2800

• CATEGORIES: MB • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The seller claims this is a 1941 Willys, but I don’t see much MB left in this jeep.  The rust looks more serious than suggested by the seller.  This jeep sports a Studebaker flathead 6, which I know nothing about, but sounds fun.

“Old military jeep. Runs, brakes may need adjusting from sitting. Body has some typical rust but nothing that can’t be fixed. Has Studabaker Champion flathead 6, T84J trans. Dash tags and clear title. Tag dated 12/31/41. This comes with lots of spare parts. Has an extra hood, fenders, grill, real nice tip down windshield, half cab with doors, roll bar, radiator, extra rims, new canvas top, spare Studabaker parts ( distributor, starter, etc )and a spare T-90 trans…”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $500.

I bought this recently as a project but have found that I have too many home projects to work on it. I bought it from Schaffers Towing in Cd’A. They got it to fire up for a moment and when I brought it home I put a little gas down the carburator and got it to fire momentarily. It turns over nicely now but doesn’t seem to be getting spark…???
The brakes are disconnected and the fuel tank is there but the fuel line runnung up to it is disconnected.
I was told that the motor in it is called a “Hurricane Four” and it has a “Spicer” gear box.
It has some rust and is missing the bed. I have seen some of these with flatbeds.

This is a deal.  The Dana 20/Turbo 400 adapter is $537.  Heck, the cooler alone would cost $40 new.  If still available, I'll pick this up on Wednesday, use the cooler myself, and resell the rest.

"What we have here a Turbo 400 transmission attached to a Dana 20 transfer case. The Turbo 400 is the BOP style pattern. 1951 CJ-3A Texas eBay

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Most of this CJ-3A looks to be in very good condition.  I'm not a fan of the roll bar though.  The low reserve of $500 means this will definitely be sold.

"Very rare find! This vehicle is showing 306 miles, yes three hundred six miles. I am assuming someone did a full frame off restoration at some point of this Jeeps life and installed those gauges at that time. I recently acquired it so, I am not sure of previous history. But, it appears to have been restored by some one and put away for some time. The paint looks great except for the burnt part on the hood which is not that noticeable until you get right up on it. It also has some minor rust around bolts and hinges and one bubble pictured on the tub right behind the passenger entry area. The body seems solid, the floors seem solid….. Call with any questions please. Thank you. 281-807-9233"

1952/59 Willys Wagon, Colorado Springs, Co **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Willys Wagons This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: *sold* .. was listed for $3500

“I’m posting this out of regret but I can’t let it sit much longer. This Overland Willys deservers a new home. It is a 1952 delivery body with a 1959 4WD frame and front end. The tranmission hump was welded in from the 59 into the 52 body (as 4WD was not available in 52 to my knowledge).

It has a 283 small block Chevy V8 as I’m told from a 62 Impalla (engine origin was word of mouth from last owner). A Carter AFB carb. Duel cherry bomb glass pack exhaust. The tranny is the original T90 that was rebuilt about 4k ago with the custom clutch. The tranfer case was not rebuilt but would take minimal work with the basics….

UPDATE:   **SOLD** Was $17,000

“2 Door Wagon, 6 Cylinder 230 Tornado, Power Brakes, Power Steering,4 Wheel Drive,Trailer Hitch, Winch

It’s 1962, open the passenger door, a 60/40 split! The 40 jumps completely out of the way, making it easy to load into the rear bench seats of this classic 2 door model. Whats this? Another 60/40 split, need something out of the back? No problem, just go get it! And oh by the way, there’s more leg room in the back seat of this vehicle then any modern SUV. Flip the rear seats forward, open it’s real “Tail Gate” and it’s just begging for 4 Longboards and some sleeping bags. In 1962 the Wagon was powered by a brand new 6 cylinder 230ci Tornado. A very unique engine, intended to be reliable and deliver plenty of low end torque. Some would say it was the perfect engine for a Jeep!”

My Build — I found some fenders (and other parts)

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I’ve located some fiberglass fenders along with a grille, a body, and a tail gate for $600.  While a decade old, these parts never been installed, drilled, or painted.  The seller says he bought these parts brand new and that they were designed for a street application, so they are a little heavier duty than the light racing bodies. That sounded fine to me, so sometime next week I’m gonna head to Oregon to check them out.  The one thing this package lacks is a hood.

These were actually for sale about a year and a half ago.  The craigslist ad had very little info and didn’t list any keywords, so it was a tough ad to find unless you specifically typed ‘flatfender’ into the search field. Also, it was winter time and, at least for me, getting over the snowy passes wasn’t worth the effort.  After being frustrated in my fender search (metal or fiberglass), Yesterday I decided to give him a call.  Sure enough, he still had everything sitting in his garage.

Because of this, I will continue to list expired Craigslists ads for a while since the sellers may not have been able to get rid of their jeep or parts, but got tired of relisting their stuff.  And, if I can get it, I’ll always list the seller’s contact info if they provide it.

Mitch rolls his CJ-3A on ‘flat’ ground

• CATEGORIES: M-38, News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

To make me feel better about cutting my brake line, Mitch sent me this series of images of him rolling his jeep last year at Rimrock (Washington State) on 'flat' ground. It kind of looks like Mitch's jeep rolled over and played dead to get out of the mud.  Another way to look at it is that, if you are going to roll over, smarter to do it on flat ground rather than on a steep hill …. but right in front of a no parking sign? (see last pic)

Here's Mitch's take on it:

"Here's the series of pics…..That mud was real thick….In the process of rocking it back and forth I was making good progress of getting out….When the front end finally pulled the rear out of the hole, it immediately slid to the left and dropped the left front tire off the little ledge you can barely see in the pics. I had enough momentum and it was enough of a drop that the jeep just slowly flopped on the left side. No damage at all. The cage and tires were the only things that touched ground."

My Build — Transfercase Shifter

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

While you can purchase a dual shifting unit from Novak for your Dana 20, it's also possible to fashion one from scratch.  Note that I've never used the dual shifter on a Dana 20 transfercase without removing the center pins that move between the shift rods in the the shifting tower.  To remove the pins, you have to remove the shift levers, drill out the plugs on the sides (note where the red gasket sealant is on the side of the shift tower, and then slip out the oblong pins (they are elongated metal balls).  With these removed, you can push and pull the levers all you want (but don't try running high range in the front and low range in the back unless you feel the need to break something).
