“Great opportunity to own a post WW II Jeep. This little utility vehicle runs, drives, stops and most everything on it works. The brakes and fuel system were recently redone, the alternator was repaired and we’ve been cruising it around the area a little here and there. This little Jeep would be great for the deer lease, puttering around the farm or restore it to it’s former glory. It appears to be a civilian Jeep as it doesn’t have any of the features found on military Jeeps of the time period. We do not have a title for it, but I will give you a contact if you would like to try to get one. The body is rusty with many holes and patches; However, the frame appears to be solid. Call me between 8am and 6pm with any questions.

UPDATE 6-17-2020: The serial number on the engine appears to identify this Jeep as a CJ-3A, if its the original engine. I haven’t been able to find any other information to verify this, but at least its a start.”

“1952 Jeep Willys, all original including the body. Its been patched, steel reinforced and is very solid all the way around. Original 6 Volt could stand to be updated as it turns over slow. Runs very nice, drives straight as an arrow and drum breaks work fine. 40k+/- miles. 4WD, three speed standard and clutch are all strong. Like new Power King Tires. New Reupholstered seats. Ideal for someone with a large property or antique plate it and drive around town! Sorry for the dirt but I’ve been tooling around in it! thanks for looking and feel free to ask questions”

1943 Photos of a ‘Jeep’ Named Squeekie

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

A one-of-a-kind ‘jeep’ named Squeekie was built from photos by William Mason in 1942. In 1943, this press photo was taken, then circulated around the country, two of which can be seen below.

Mason worked at Oakland’s Independent Iron Works, Inc. I wasn’t able to uncover too much about Mason, other than he filed a patent for an arc welding machine, on behalf of his employer in October of 1956.

This photo was shared on a vintage photograph Facebook Group by Bob Cunningham. He included the following text, though I’m unaware of where the text originated (maybe based on an original press photo caption?):

1942-jeep-squeekie-oakland-ca

Per the Facebook post: “In 1942, William Mason, an iron works superintendent in Oakland, California, used newspaper photographs to create “Squeekie,” his version of the Army’s new wonder car, the “jeep.” Although Mason built the 2-horsepower car for his son, Billy, his wife often used it for ’round-the-town grocery shopping during the days of gas rationing, since it got a thrifty 35 miles per gallon and rolled on unrationed, small sized implement tires. The little “jeep” was once stolen and abandoned in a farmer’s field, and the U.S. Army was notified that one of their prototypes had been found. At the time, most civilians had never seen an actual “jeep,” so the mistake was understandable.”

Here are two newspaper photos and captions:

1945 MB Connecticut $3000

• CATEGORIES: MB This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Price dropped to $3000.

(05/06/2020) Matt’s selling this MB. He can be reached via call or text at 860 304 3639.

“Selling one of my projects I won’t have time to get to anytime soon. Up for sale is a late war Willys MB. I believe it is a 1945. All of the data tags are gone so there is no serial number or DOD. There is an ACM number on the tub and it can clearly be read. The frame, axles, steering components and certain body parts are in good shape but the sheet metal is very rough. One of the front frame horns will also need to be replaced.

Lots of rust in the body as you can see in the pictures. There is a later CJ2A engine in it but no transmission or transfer case. There are still a-lot of good hard to find parts on it. This is a good start to a restoration as the chassis is very solid and usable or as a parts vehicle to complete another Jeep with a better body and drivetrain. I do have some parts and pieces that can be purchased separately to make it more complete. Located in Connecticut. Asking $3500 obo.”

“Don’t get excited, they don’t run . . yet. Three vintage early CJ jeeps, all Willys, two CJ2As and one CJ3A. What you see is what you get.
I purchased these three at different times from different sources and was going to get one running “Sarge” jeep for parades and events. Believe enough parts are here to get close to that. But another jeep came my way that will accomplish that purpose and these three can go to a good home.
All three motors turn, not stuck, but have not attempted to start, some do not have manifolds and carbs. Again, my intent was to get one out of three, that’s why I’m sell all three as a lot. $900 takes them all and any loose parts I can find laying around.
The 3A has a L134 engine with a Supersonic head on it and a carb and is the closest to running and the most complete body. One 2A has a Willys L134 motor and the other has a Willys L134 Industrial engine. All three have T90 transmissions and one has a PTO winch mounted on the front bumper.

I have fork lift to assit with loading but if you want to push them or winch them onto your trailer, we might have to switch some tires and wheels around to get rollers.”

1942 Photo of the Fitch Jeep Station Wagon Car

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images, Unusual • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE II: Marc noted the the rear of the vehicle is based on a Renault Juvaquatre. It just so happens this car is somewhat based on the German Opel, which Wally King used to create his Jeepster-like vehicle in Germany following WWII.

UPDATE:  UndiscoveredClassics.com had some additional insights into this vehicle. I tried to learn more about Captain Richard C. Fitch of the Second Regiment Mechanized Cavalry Reserve, Los Angeles, but didn’t have much luck. I did learn he was a design engineer for the Army and was responsible for the MT Tug design (see below post). Below is a photo of how it looked in a newspaper.

=======================

Originally published March 2014:  I wonder what ever happened to this prototype? Marc spotted this unusual photo. The vehicle doesn’t seem very jeep-like, except in its compact design and front clip similarity. It doesn’t appear it was four wheel drive.

=========================

Update Posted on March 2, 2017: Here’s another MT Tug Press Photo. See one sold on eBay in 2014 at the bottom of the post.

“1942- Very rare example of a 6×6 Ford MT Tug “Super Jeep” designed by Captain Richard Fitch of the 2nd Regiment Mechanized Cavalry Reserve. The MT Tug was built in 1941 experimentally for units of the U.S. Army’s Tank Destroyer Command as a light fast vehicle capable of mounting the 37mm anti tank gun..unfortunately series production of this Jeep was not eventually authorized as the gun needed two people to operate it, and the vehicle with gun fitted, could only carry two men so the driver had to act as gunner, which did not make the vehicle a good idea ”
