Bruce wanted to share this “Form H1-3-59 Jeep Gala advertising booklet”.

Retro Toy Magnet at ETSY for $6
Someone created this magnet from a vintage Tonka Toy ad. It can be purchased at ETSY.
1948 CJ-2A Hesperia, MI **SOLD**
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1800
I don’t see to many surreyized CJ-2As.
“1948 Willys CJ2A in pretty good shape. Does not have a title. I have not started it in about 8 years, but have oil in the cylinders. It was converted to 12 volt. Transfer case or 4 wheel drive works.I have the doors, but are not shown installed. One window is cracked in one of the doors. Have been meaning to restore and get new parts to tighten up the steering and suspension. It needs brake work. Two new tires on the back. Have an extra seat and two old heaters to go with it. Stored in the barn for the last 16 years.”
The DJ-3A Surrey at the Wailea Hotel on Maui, Hawaii
I received an email from Paul the other day and the subject read ‘Refreshing’. One quick look at the picture in the email explained what he meant (see the 1st picture below).
Yep, that is one pretty jeep!
Using the keyword “Wailea” I started tracking down more pictures of it. It turns out Colin has a couple of them too, as does a friend of his. So, here are a few of this jeep that is still owned by the Wailea Hotel in Maui (boy, after today’s cold weather, Maui is sounding awfully nice!)
More pictures I found on the internet:
And from Colin, you can see the jeep prior to the stenciling:
A Couple Pedal Jeeps from the UK
I happened across these pedal cars tonight at an old classic car website: http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/pedal-cars.htm. You can see other pedal cars at the CJ-3B Page: http://cj3b.info/Toys/ridingtoys.html
On a separate search I found a bunch of pedal cars for sale through http://www.prices4antiques.com . Unfortunately, you have to subscribe to find out the prices.

A DJ-3A Gala Pedal Car
CJ-5 Surrey
Speaking of unique Surreys, Mike wrote the following Comment:
“Back in 1962, One of my dad’s favorite hangouts, Lee’s tavern on Crooks Ave. in Clifton, NJ bought a special order CJ5 with a pink surrey fringe top and matching upholstery. It was the talk of the town. This Jeep was a double twist on the phrase “special order”. It was a first generation Tuxedo Park model with the featured color scheme of white body with red grille and red wheels, along with the surrey top and seat covers which were installed over stock upholstery at the factory. The local legend story at the time was; He had to wait 6 months for delivery.”
So, I spent some time searching for a CJ-5 Surrey picture. I didn’t find any real ones, but I did find one toy: A CJ-5 toy from 1960.

Peddle Car Eustis, Fl **SOLD**

1962 DJ-3A Surrey Maryland $2500
UPDATE: Still Available
(06/07/2011) Glenn is selling his DJ-3A. glenns@tdstelme.net
“1962 Willys DJ3A Surrey, Body,Original Frame with SN# 21501 visible, Surrey Top Bows, Included also is Original DJ3A Front Axle, Rear Axle, and Side Shift T-96 B Transmission I purchased separately and am picking up on way to The Great Willys Picnic, Sunday, June 12. The bad side of the deal is there is NO Title, NO Data Plate, but repros are available (Would Read 56337-21501), and other than a few other misc. parts, what you see is what you get. The original frame is usable, though the front cross member has been replaced with a later unit to accommodate a steering sector which is included. The 4WD Axles included are probably CJ5. According to the folks in Maryland I bought this from, this Surrey was used frequently on a 60’s TV Show called Wonderama broadcast locally in the NYC and Baltimore areas, but I have not confirmed this yet. This was originally a true pink Surrey, built in the first third of 1962 production. A challenging restoration, you’ll be searching for many DJ3A specific parts, but here is a great beginning and only out and about because of this eWillys site along with Dave’s sharp eyes. The price is $2500 CASH, includes delivery to either The Great Willys Picnic or any where between there and my Maine location. Again: Bill of Sale ONLY!!! Email me glenns@tdstelme.net for phone contact and other information.”

1962 DJ-3A Surrey(?) Oahu Airport, HI **SOLD**
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $5000
I wonder if the seller has verification that this was a Hotel DJ.
“It is a 1962 Jeep Willys DJ-3A one of about 2500 made that year. It was originaly a little Island touring truck that the hotels would use to take guest around. Its in good running order, looks ok. It does need a paint job and a little body work. Price is negotiable. I am leaving the Island soon so it needs to sell. attached is a pic of what it could be. right now it is flat black.”
1960 DJ-3A Pennsylvania **SOLD**
UPDATE: This now lives on the East Coast. I got to examine it up close at the 2013 Bantam Festival. The work is excellent. It was bought for $9000. It has more of a surrey look to it now.
I used the IMCDb.org site to attempt to locate an image of the jeep to the right from a shot in the movies. You can see a DJ-3A from Blue Hawaii (not a very good shot). Or the same shot enhanced and cropped to the left. Here’s a link to a shot of the Nutty Professor’s DJ-3A.
This flat fender (the one on the right) falls into the ‘unusual jeep’ category. Apparently, it’s a movie star!

Bruce Finds Some More Las Brisas Surreys
Bruce forwarded me these unusual and rare posts cards of some unusual Surreys (here’s a compilation of Surrey & DJ info). Bruce has attempted to contact the Las Brisas Manager to learn if they have a historian of sorts for their jeeps in use, but he hasn’t had any luck. If anyone has any Las Brisas connections, please let me know! Thanks for sharing Bruce.
Check out the guy driving the jeep, a stick no less, carrying a tray of food!
Brian writes, “These 2 jeeps offer clues but also leaves one with more questions. The extended tub, tailgate, baby moon hubcaps, valance panels, and an absence of chrome bumpers. Also, there was no date stamp on the card, but it looks to be from the late/early 50-60s.
On the back of the postcard, written in both English and Spanish, it reads Room service by jeeps- unique at hotel Las Brisas in Acapulco where every room a has it’s own pool.”
1962 DJ-3A Surrey Arapahoe, Ne **SOLD**
UPDATE: Was $5000.
(06/01/2010) This is a little rough, but looks mostly original to my less-than-perfect eye.
“For Sale or trade a 1962 Willys Surrey Gala (DJ-3A) Original condition runs and drives, many new parts asking $5000 or would consider trade for any Jeep/Willys CJ, Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, or Boat.
Many new parts, in good running condition. The following items are NEW: clutch & pressure plate, brake master cylinder, head light switch, dimmer switch, water pump, head gasket, fan belt, points, plugs, plug wires, coil, cap and rotor, rebuilt carb. Radiator boiled out and professionally referbished. Brakes have been gone through and new wheel cylinders kits installed. Drivers seat bottom was re-done with pink and white vinyl. All lights work, all gauges work, new tires on rear, good used tires on front. Jeep runs and drives great. It is missing the original top and top frame, spare tire holder and the rear bumper. Clear title.”
Two ‘new’ DJ-3A Surrey Images
Bruce forwarded me links to two images of Surreys he has posted.
The first one is from the Virgin Islands in 1958 and shows a DJ-3A in the center of the picture and a DJ-3A Surrey at the lower left. The second image shows 5 or more Surreys sitting at rental lot Hawaii, the surrey in center front
is a 1963 with 13″ tires and babymoon hubcaps.
Hot Dog Vendor Setup for a DJ-3A Surrey Howell, NJ **SOLD**
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay
Bruce spotted this unusual jeep utility addition. The seller notes they scrapped the jeep, but then says he was just kidding and is keeping the jeep (in other words, jeep is not for sale). Anyway, the hotdog vendor unit is certainly an unusual feature!
“Up for sale is a hot dog cooking insert for a willys jeep. Scrapped the jeep(was a little rusty) but thought the hot dog unit was worth saving. Has lots of places to cook stuff and it fits like a glove. Check out the pics. some modification to the wheel well on the drivers side to accomodate what looks to be a sink.probably could remove this piece so no cutting wheel well.Has all the valves and burners I think never tried it out. could use some nobs for the temp control. from the front of the jeep you can not tell this is in the back, and from the back you can not tell its a jeep. from the side it looks like it should be there. happy bidding ! Only kidding about scraping the jeep, the jeep does not go with it. pickup in howell nj only. Pay in full and will hold inside as long as needed. this thing would be the hot diggity dog of the trail rides. good luck! Bill”
