Life magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith too this photo on Mariana Island of Saipan during the summer of 1944. You can see more photos at dailymail.co.uk’s site. As you can see, both of these jeeps are MB Slatgrilles. Interesting that the spares are stored in the same place used later by the CJs.

3 Barbaros en un Jeep Movie Post on eBay
I imagine this is an unusual and rare poster. It’s not cheap. Here’s a short video that’s been posted on Facebook.

Cuban movie posters were made using the handmade silkscreen process. Aesthetically, the paint, applied in thick layers gave these posters a unique texture that is closer to a painting than to posters. Artistically they are among the best designed in the world and many prizes were awarded to their creators. For more information about the history of Cuban posters and his artists, visit my page at artofcuba.com.
This poster was kept flat in a temperature controlled room for the last 10 years. Some flaws like small tears in the border, cracks in the silkscreen paint, pinhole bug bites and water stains are very common in Cuban posters due to the humid/hot weather. Careless handling and poor storage of the posters also contributed to their condition. It is very difficult to find an original silkscreen from the 60’s and 70’s. And almost impossible to find it in pristine condition. In the majority of titles, only 250-500 handmade posters were ever printed and except for a selected group of collectors, most people disposed of them by dressing walls or recycling. Only a fraction of those survived until now. This is one of the very few. Includes a Certificate of Authenticity from CubanPosters. SEE SAMPLE
TITLE: Tres barbaros en un jeep (3 Cool guys in a Jeep) – Cuban film by Directed by Manuel de la Pedroza
YEAR: 1955
ARTIST: Unknown
MEDIUM: Stone Lithograph
SIZE: 27″x37″= 69×94 cm
CONDITION and GRADE: 2 (see scale bellow) COMMENTS: This is a pre-revolutionary poster from 1955. It was originally folded for distribution. There is a small hole where the folds meet and can be easily repaired. The rest of the poster is in mint condition.
This is a simple grading scale I developed for silkscreen movie posters. I’d been an avid collector for almost 20 years and I’ve seen thousands of them. I was part of the poster scene and met many of the artists. I read everything is printed about Cuban posters. With every original poster I will send you a Certificate of Authenticity legally graded and signed by me. SEE SAMPLE
1-MINT. This spot is reserved only for those lucky posters that were acquired while new by collectors that luckily like them so much, that kept them in a acid-free and temperature-humidity controlled enviroment. Even under these circumstances, yellowing of the paper is expected.
2-VERY GOOD- The poster is complete. Painting is smooth and bright. Some small tears around the border might be present as long as they are repaired to avoid further damage.
3-AVERAGE-Here lies every poster that is still beautiful enough to be framed and admired, waiting for the day when it will be so valuable and rare that sending your poster to a professional restorer will be an investment (Check Posterfix on eBay). Small bug bites, cracking in the paint, light folds, repairable tears and water stains are fine as long as the flaw does not interfere with the beauty and integrity of the image.
4-FAIR- I have many many beauties that fall in this category. It is reserved to the neglected poster. The one who spent years and years rolled in top of a closet in humid Havana or under the beds to keep them flat. Also those who were glued to the walls
5-BAD- This place is only for the poster that is beyond repair BUT is still collectible because it has more than 40 years, only 50 were made and probably this one is the only one in existence.
I included are some closeups from the actual poster for best visualization of its condition.

Given the column shift and the single speedometer, I think this is a DJ-3A.

Ford GP Goes Through Manuevers
The September 1941 issue of Popular Mechanics (pg 3) features this photo of a Ford GP landing on to the ground. The article suggests there was a great deal of excitement over the jeep’s possibilities. I’ve included some of the text from the article (which covers a variety of war vehicles). The write discusses the potential for jeeps, then mentions a four wheeled ‘tank’ with independent suspension. To me that sounded a lot like the Tucker Combat Car.

Jim’s Restored 1948 CJ-2A
The staff at Bo’s Hotrods in Sanford, NC, just finished work on Jim’s restored CJ-2A. It looks like they do some good work. The jeep will now head to Maine where it will enjoy life in the country.
Here are some ‘before’ pics. As you can see, it appears it was thoroughly rebuilt.
Roberto’s Tall Jeep Cartoon
Roberto Flores forwarded this illustration yesterday. Some of those lifted jeeps are REALLY tall!
2014 Jeep Wrangler Willys Edition
Jeep just announced their Wrangler Willys Wheeler Edition. This is supposed to harken back to (or at least celebrate) the simplicity of the original civilian jeeps: the CJ-2A. When I look at it, I don’t see “2A”. However, I like the WILLYS sticker on the hood. Here are a couple links to more information:

New VW Ad From Uruguay
Hugo spotted this recently published ad which shows a VW pulling a Willys Wagon out of the mud. I prefer to think of it as the Wagon winching the VW backwards 🙂
He writes, “It is an advertisement of a brand new VW Amarok pulling of an old Willys. Is it fair? We could say:” stuck but still running!” Plates seem to be from Chile, but the willys could be an argentinian Estanciera. Journal is from Uruguay.”

CBI G.I. HOPED JEEP COULD FLY
By Sgt. ART HEENAN
Roundup Staff Writer
The British had known all along that Americans believed the jeep could do anything except fly, but it remained for T/5 Jack E. Graham, now in the CBI, to show our Allies that Yank belief amounts to more than verbal tribute.
Graham did it by trying to climb the highest pyramid in Egypt aboard a jeep. He never got to the top, but that wasn’t his fault.
Graham says he was attached to an Ordnance unit that trailed the Eighth Army, repairing salvaged battlefield equipment. He and three of his buddies had seized a new jeep abandoned by the Heinies in their retreat. (“The British called us ‘American Gurkhas,’ because we were all from Texas,” explains Graham.)
He and his compatriots were sitting around camp one night, listening to a British broadcast and downing Egyptian jingbao juice. Over the air came a statement that the Eighth Army had a man who had driven a golf ball over the pyramids.
“We decided if the British could drive a golf ball over the pyramids, we could drive a jeep over,” recounts Graham. “So we set out to prove it.”
The “Yank Gurkhas” had no trouble finding the pyramids. They successfully maneuvered the jeep through the corridor in the center of the Sphinx and prepared to mount what they judged to be the highest pyramid. Graham remained at the wheel and the other adventurers piled out and began to bank the steps with sand so the wheels could get some purchase.
The jeep and the 200 pounds of chubby-like Graham had actually gotten up three of the steps when British GMP’s arrived on the scene. When the astounded Britishers found out what the Yanks contemplated, they withdrew and held a conference. The G.I.’s merrily returned to their pyramid project.
“But the British sergeant came back.” sorrowfully explains Graham. “He told me, ‘Sorry, Yank, but you can’t climb the blinkin’ pyramid, you know. It’s not official business.'”
When Graham’s C.O. heard of the incident, S/Sgt. Graham became Pvt. Graham – and he also lost his jeep.
Graham plans to take advantage of Congressional promises that G.I.’s will have priority on purchasing jeeps after the war.
“Might get back to Egypt at that and climb that blankety-blank pyramid,” he says.

Our ‘Commercial’ Debut
Being the local celebs that we are (yeah, right), we dropped by a local wine bar (Gordons) where the owners are going to let me talk about and sell my books. While there, they were shooting a commercial. I guess they were desperate for ‘talent’ because we appear at the end of their commercial. I like to think we scored the anchor spot!
The only online place we’ve found the commercial online was on Facebook. Below is a snapshot from when it played on TV.
Ford GP Model on eBay
The cover of this box shows a Ford GP, so it might be a Ford GP model.
