More on Circus Jeeps

• CATEGORIES: Features, Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Yesterday I received a book I purchased earlier this month called “Circus and Carnival Trucks 1923-2000″.  Though mostly about trucks, the book includes several pictures of jeeps.  One of the pictures shows a jeep modified into a performance  prop called the “Little Red School House”.  Essentially, it’s a mobile school house that can be brought into a performance and then quickly driven away.

Trying to find other examples of this, I discovered a great thread from the CJ-2A Page about a jeep ownerwho managed to track down the history of a early CJ-2A his father bought from the Ringling Brothers Circus.  After some help from the forum and some research, he discovered several photos of his jeep all dressed up as “Lilliput”.

The Illinois State University has some pictures of Lilliput.  Here are a couple.  You can view more pics and the entire thread related to the re-discovery of Lilliput at the CJ-2A Page.

Here’s another example of a performance jeep.  This is the “Little Red School House”. The picture is from the side.  The second looks more like a jeep.

Chuck’s 1951 CJ-3A

• CATEGORIES: Builds, CJ-3A, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Chuck wrote me yesterday to share his good looking 1951 CJ-3A. He bought it last summer off of eWillys, choosing a 1951 jeep because that was the year he was born. The body, home built by the previous owner, is made from 3/16th steel. Chuck is currently rebuilding a Koenig hard top for it.

Chuck, thanks for sharing the pics. I look forward to seeing the top when you finish it!

Seasons Greetings from Canada

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The holiday spirit seems to have overtaken Lawrence and his 1929 Willys Overland Whippet. Lawrence hails from West Vancouver, BC, Canada.  I guess they take the holidays pretty seriously up there. This picture shows them getting ready to deliver Christmas eve presents in style.  And here, I thought he got the Whippet all dressed up just to land at the top of eWillys!  Lawrence is also the soon-to-be owner of FC-150.

Africa in a Jeep by Joe Ceurvorst

• CATEGORIES: Books, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I stumbled across this book written by French Author Joe Ceurvorst based on a trip in 1956.  I have found two different covers for it (shown below).  Most copies seem to be in the UK. The author was traveling around Africa about the same time as Dorothy and Louise.

Apparently, the writers of the Catholic Herald weren’t uber fans of the book.  Their review, in full, from March 9th, 1956, goes like this:

It may seem virtually impossible today to find real adventure, the French author of this book found it by irresponsibly taking an old liberation jeep, with a single passenger and a dog, on a round-African trip from Algiers to the Gulf of Guinea, thence to Lake Victoria, and back to Tunis via Cairo.

Our surprise, however, at his still being alive is greater than at the revelations of his story. It was worth writing, but the account is superficial. Good reading, perhaps. for a dull and oversafe train journey.

Abe Books has copies of this book

However, I thought I would share my find-of-the-day with you. It is
a jeep light/lamp that I found at a local good will. I put a hot
wheel on top for comparison.

Mod AC Amphibian Jeep Instruction Kit **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Features, Models This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay

These are a set of instructions and the schematics to build a SEEP (GPA).

“Vintage 1940s era 1/2 inch scale model of the U.S. Army Amphibian Jeep or Quack, produced by MOD-AC Manufacturing Company of Los Angeles. Included in the auction are two remaining pieces of the Jeep’s original die cut cards – nothing else remains from the set. Found in an old box of model pieces, the schematics / assembly instructions for this stood out as frameable art, especially for the lover of short-run Jeeps. The assembly instructions are printed only on one side – what you see is what you get. The cards measure about 8-1/2″ long, the instructions, about 15-1/2″ wide and 10-1/2″ tall. The instructions have been folded for almost 70 years, and have no stains or major rips, but there are some pin-size holes and a little damage in one area to the paper, probably from handling or from insects.”

Craig’s Pic of the Week: Unusual Jeep Train

• CATEGORIES: Craigs Pic of the Week, Features, Postcards • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

For his Pic of the Week, Craig forwarded this unusual train built on a jeep platform that was featured in a 1964 issue of Jeep News.

I found an example of the above train-jeep being used at Africa, USA, though the details were slightly different.  These pictures come from cardcow.com.

I’m wondering if this jeep train out of St. Augustine, FL, isn’t a custom version of the above platform.  You can see the older St. Augustine Jeep Trains here.
