No updates today, but I did recycle a few old posts below. Ann’s grandfather passed away a couple days ago and his funeral was yesterday (lots of family in town last night). He lived a full life, so more relief than sadness that his suffering is no more.

1953 Photo and Story from Alaska
Paul’s Goddess is always watching jeep photos. This photo includes a good story. This photo and story was assembled by Laurel Bill and posted to Facebook. I couldn’t locate an original story and link on Laurel’s website.
“A group of Cordova Airlines passengers boarded jeeps at the May Creek Airfield in 1953 to go check out the ghost town of McCarthy and the old mining town of Kennicott where the Kennecott Copper Mine had operated. The two men in uniform were the pilots of the plane that flew these folks to the area, and the caption said they were having just as good a time as any of the passengers.
McCarthy was the turnaround station for the Copper River Northwestern Railroad, and hotels, restaurants and stores quickly popped up. Since no gambling or drinking alcohol was allowed in the mining town of Kennicott, McCarthy offered many diversions for the miners and railroad workers with its saloons and “red light” district.
At its peak, about 800 people lived in the town. But when the copper mine closed in 1938, McCarthy became a ghost town.”

There will be jeep-related folks there as well. I know for sure Willys America will be attending. As i understand there’s a pretty good showing of other 4×4 parts there, too.

Texas Trip Cancelled For Now
I’m sorry to report that we’ve cancelled the 2015 Texas trip for the time being. We were supposed to begin the trip April 4th (tomorrow), but Ann’s 86yo grandfather’s health has slipped rapidly in the past couple of days. Hospice assistance is now being provided to him. While his death has been expected for some time, it’s imminent enough that we both feel it is better remain in Pasco.
If we find ourselves skipping Texas this year, we should still be getting to Colorado/Utah/Nevada. There are some places I need to visit and photograph for my current book, so that trip (maybe May??) might be the replacement. Mostly, I’m just itching for a good long trip after being cooped up in my office researching and writing most of the last six months.
