Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. This article shares some of the jeep rustling that went on during WWII. One of protections against rustling that I’ve encountered is that driver’s would grab the rotor from the distributor to keep other military folks from stealing their jeeps.
Note that the ice cream story from yesterday has expanded to five gallons!

In World War II, Burton Baskin of Baskin Robbins fame, was a quartermaster who began his ice cream career by trading a jeep for an ice cream freezer
Now, I don’t know if that’s true as I couldn’t verify it anywhere else, but a fun fact if true.

I had no idea there were this many Pepsi Surreys produced. I can’t believe someone didn’t get this photo in color. Eighteen of these were sent to Tulsa. I can’t imagine there aren’t a few stragglers still in the area. This photo is from the March 1960 issue of Jeeps News.
This photo was published in the December 1978 issue of the Silent Wings Newsletter. Santa was exiting a Waco CG13. Read more here and look for December 2013.
This April 1956 article from Willys News highlights the importance of fleet sales to an Oklahoma dealer.

I found this jeep related article in a School Bulletin from 1968. Not a lot of information, but I thought it was interesting it was there in the first place. It documents a trip into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in New Mexico.

Craig scanned this photo from an issue of Jeep News. It was take at the set of “The Teahouse of the August Moon“. I’ve never heard of the movie, but it’s rated pretty well at imbd. You’ll likely recognize Glenn Ford, driving the jeep, and Marlon Brando, pointing at something. It looks like a Ford GPW based on the bumper.
Craig found this article in the August 1956 issue of Jeep News. A pair of signs only cost $7.00 at the time.
This article for sale on eBay comes from the October 9, 1949, issue of Railway Age. It shows four different pictures of a jeep doing different railroad related tasks.

I just ran across this article about the 1964 Jeep Derby on my computer. It’s pretty interesting. I have several other Jeep Derby articles in magazines that I still need to scan.
Bob bought this photo at an antique store a couple days ago. Visible in it are trailers, a wagon, and a couple flatties. The sign appears to read “145 e. werrick rd, tel. Valley stream 3638”
After some googling, Bob and I determined there was a Valstrey Service Corporation at 145 E. Merrick in Freeport, NY, which is very close the town of Valley Stream, NY. Further research yielded a newspaper ad out of the Brooklyn Eagle (Jan. 22nd 1950, pg 15) showing the Valstrey Service Corp from the address above in a Willys Advertisement (see below).
