The Jolly & Renault: Competitors to the DJ-3A Surrey
UPDATE: Glenn spotted this unusual competitor to the DJ-3A Surrey. The seller calls it a Jolly, though the magazine picture below suggests it is actually the Renault (thanks DC). The one shown below has been in the Newport Beach area for years and was once owned by the founder of Armor All. It is up for auction on eBay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180772628708
Included in the Auction is a picture of a Mechanix article that discusses the DJ-3A Surrey, the Jolly and a Renault Beach Wagon. I tried to find the original article, but couldn’t. However, I did the other Modern Mechanix articles about jeeps listed in the posts below this one. Great stuff!
1947 Truck Paris, Mi $850
Here is a strangely modified truck pointed out by James.
“This is a 1947 2wd willys truck that is a flatbed. The eng runs great and it drives good too. The truck has been customized to a rag top and behind the windshield to the back of the cab is all well made. This is something you must see to get a true picture. It has the 6cyl with the 3speed on the floor trans and all original axles, shafts and frame. I was told dodge made these for the military for a short time but don’t know a lot about it. The miles are low and there is no smoke or bad noises in the drive line. One windshield is cracked but the dash is in good condition and the steering is tight. There is functional exaust stacks on it as well. I have seats for it and a console but they are not in it as of yet. I just put a 54.00 electric fuel pump on it. It still needs the wood doors replaced but I have one for a pattern and the floors were just replaced and painted. The bed is in great shape. Feel free to ask any questions and I will answer them all.”

“42? WILLYS MB? WITH ¼ TON TRAILER BED, FLAT HEAD MOTOR, RAN WHEN PARKED LAST YEAR, NO TITLE,”
1960 FC-170 Bend, OR **SOLD**
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay
“ A very unique Willys Jeep FC-170.
Bought new in Oregon by a rancher – story told he bought it new and then had the engine swapped out to a Hercules 6 cylinder because it had many more H.P. Then he had a professional welder fabricator build a hauling container on the back for hauling two horses, two cows, or maybe just one Rhino.
It has not been running for about 9 years. It has been kept in a heated storage unit for last 7 years. One cab corner needs to be replaced but they do make reproduction replacements. Right side glass needs to be replaced also.
There is a Winch under the truck and rollers under each bumper so you can winch from the front or the rear. There are doors on both sides of the hauling box for putting hay in there for the animals. It has a snorkel air cleaner, snorkel oil breather, and a snorkel gas fill. The welds are very high quality – you can’t even see any grinding marks. This truck can cross rivers!
The tailgate is operated through a pulley system with a really cool antique crank. And it really works. Check out the pictures! The seats were recovered early on, so the original upholstery is still on the seats. I will add other oddities as I think of them.””

1946? Ford? Jeepster West Valley City, Ut **SOLD**
UPDATE: Bob from Ohio bought this. I can’t wait to hear more about it. Was listed at $1000.
Bob forwarded this to me via the CJ-2A Page. It’s an odd duck. I am thinking it it is a shortened Jeepster on a CJ frame.
“46 Ford Jeepster a one of a kid. Needs a lot of work but has a lot of potential. I bought the car 16 years ago and haven’t had the time or money to get it restored. It has some transmission problems and other minor problems, dead battery, etc. Has new tires. I need to sell it as soon as possible and the price is negotiable..”
A Couple Willys Trucks
Robin emailed me the other day asking how rare Willys trucks with tow packages are. Before answering her question, I did some searches to make sure my answer, which was yes, was correct. That’s when I came across these two pictures. One is a beautiful Willys Tow Truck and the other is entirely odd ball.
This is a picture that is being auctioned on eBay:
This image was taken by Randy Brown on February of 2010:

Buz Visits the Good Guys Hot Rod Show
On Saturday Buz stopped by the Good Guys Hot Rod show at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina. He saw some cool vehicles and took some pictures of them for us. Thanks Buz!
Buz reports that the makers of these bags are waiting for approval from Jeep to produce this tool bag. He says everyone there wanted to buy this one prototype.
1920 Trip of 25,000 Miles
A few days ago in Omaha Ann took me to a favorite local chain called PepperJax. Somebody decided to turn the concept of a buritto shop — where the customer moves down from station to station as someone builds their burrito — into a philly steak shop. So, you can get steak over rice, in a sandwich, in a salad, and more. It was quite good, with the bun made fresh minutes before my sandwich was built and piled high with steak.
After devouring my sandwich, I was admiring some of the old pictures hanging on the wall when I spotted this interesting photo. I tried to find more information about it, but the story escaped my searches. A caption underneath the picture states the image was of an Auto Camp taken September 23, 1920 at Elmwood Park in Omaha, Nebraska,. On the car, which appears to sport all metal spoke wheels (or maybe part wood), were the following phrases:
1. ONLY A FORD
2. 25,000 Miles in 1 YR
3. OVER – 11,000 M in 3 months
4. over 5,000 towns and cities
5. ______ OR BUST (I couldn’t make out the first word).
The car is pretty strange. There must be a good story here. Below is the whole picture followed by a closeup of the car.

This classic 80’s build makes me drool, even with the exterior cooling fan. It even comes equipped with a hot water shower, multiple batteries and a welder. I’m digging the creativity.
