David found this article on the history of the jeep in an issue of the September 1978 issue of Car and Parts Magazine. It a rare photo of the four-wheel-steer Bantam BRC-40 that was once owned by Checker (Bill Spears has lots to share about the Checker/Bantam). It very well could be the one in the post below.

“This jeep has the original go devil 4 cylinder and factory drive train. It’s tag is up to date and It has a clean title. I use it to drive to work on really nice days ( 10 mile round trip) and take the family for rides around the ranch. Four wheel drive works wonderfully and transfer case shifts effortlessly. The numbers match and body sequence is correct. The Jeep was manufactured in Ford’s Louisville plant in May 1945 and believed to have been used at Cory Navel Base in Pensacola and later sold to the West Virginia Highway Dept.”

“Super Rare 1954 Willys Wagon 4×4. 1 ton axels, locker in the rear, full spool in the front. 39.5 Super Swamper Boggers, 350 crate motor. Hand Pinstriping. Painless wiring was installed this past winter. LED tail lights. New battery. New dual electric fans on the radiator. Gas can mounted on the passenger side and fake gas can/tool box on the driver side. The underside is undercoated. Some rust holes in the body, but it adds to the charm of this rig. The trucks gets looks everywhere I take it! I have it insured and drive it around town a few times a week. It only needs shocks , new passenger glass and passenger front glass to be finished. No tire kickers. No free rides. I hate to sell this monster but I have three other projects that I’m trying to finish. Asking $11,500. And please don’t try to low ball me. I have over $5,000 into the axels, tires and rims. Clean title in hand!!!”

Not much rust but paint does have scratches from trail exploring. It is 68 years old. Needs passenger side glass.”

Lots of $$ in brand new parts (carb, distributor, starter, starter solenoid, plugs, wires, etc.
Jeep starts very easily. Runs strong. Transmission shifts as it should. 4wd works. No fluid leaks. Has a little smoke, but this is fairly common on these old flathead motors. Its a good jeep and a solid platform for a restoration. Has some rust, needs tierod ends and leaf spring bushings and a few other minor things.
