This looks pretty nice, but I can’t quite tell how original it is other than the non-original windshield.
“This is a nice little jeep with a hard to find wagon. The engine is a 4cyl. and the transmission is a 3spd. It is a 4×4 with lowlock. It runs good and has good brakes. It is stock. The wagon is an army with front brake lock. The owner can be contacted at 812-936-9192 for a complete detail of the jeep and wagon. Also you can email me with your question or phone number. The owner is asking $3500. OBO. for this combo. He may also consider taking trades. Thanks”
Well, I completely blew it. I’m ashamed, embarrassed. Truly, I wasn’t thinking clearly. Too much stuff was clogging my brain tunnels to put the pieces together. Here’s the sad, brief tale …
Late yesterday afternoon the ‘staff’ (also known as Brett) at the Utah Bureau of eWillys spotted a great deal: A 1948 flattie for only $1000. It appeared almost completely stock, with no obvious rust, though there was plenty of paint oxidation.
It had unusual bezels, a CJ-3Aish windshield, a cutout for a breather on the passenger side of the hood and hooks on the front. It was an odd combo of a M-38, a CJ-3A and titled with a year of 1948. Also, strangely, it had no willys script on the hood that I could see.
My gut said go get it. My practical side said no, so I put it out of my head. I should have listened to my gut, because after thinking about, I now realize it was CJV-35U that was running, extremely stock (except for the installation of the bench seat), and in great shape.
OHHH THE PAINNN!!!! How did I not put those clues together? Unfortunately, only an hour or so after I made my decision not to get it, it disappeared from the KSL classified list. So, the decision was made for me and I put it out of my mind. It wasn’t until this morning that I realized how big my mistake had been.
Alas, this too shall pass, slowly, painfully, like a kidney stone.
Here’s a perfect example of what it looked like (I didn’t get the chance to download the pics of it). Imagine this, unrestored, without the breathers for the intake and exhaust … and with a hardtop: http://www.cj3a.info/sibling/cjv35u/photos/p158.html (or click on the above link)
Somewhere around 1950 the Emergency Management Folks in Saugus, Massachusetts, bought a CJ-3A as an all-around emergency vehicle. As you can see by the emergency boat (being towed by the Jeep in the 2nd pic below), this isn’t a high budget operation, but then this town of 26,000 probably didn’t need much more (though they did invest in a DUKW in the late ’50s).
Sixty years later, Saugus still has the CJ-3A (at least it looks the same with minor additions). Sporting the code name ‘Unit 41’, it seems this EMV handles emergency parades more than anything these days.
You can see more of the early Saugus EMVs here, including the original Seagrave Pumper from 1919.
Often mistaken for a ‘Willys’ (there goes the trademark …), this poor Ford M151 captured by Charles Jolliffe looks pretty beat up. Though image description notes, “This old Jeep is buried deep in the woods of Florida. I guess someone forgot where they parked. Limited Edition Series One- signed and numbered by artist“; I believe this M151 is actually hiding from it’s owner. Seriously, can you blame it?
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $2600.
This does not include an engine and transmission.
“For sale is a1952 Willys CJ3A jeep compete less engine, trans and t/c. This jeep has been in our family for over 30 years. This was a project started but never finished. The body is perfect with NO RUST and a sweet paint job.
Here is what was done up till now: Body was removed and sand blasted then painted. Same with the frame rail. New Rancho 2.5″ suspension installed with KYB shocks. Replaced the origanal axle with a pair from a 1968 jeep, Dana 44 rear and a Dana 27 front. Installed front mounted steering plate for power or manual, replace tie rods and tube with 1 piece (1972 jeep style steering). ”
Given this includes an overdrive, nice tires, and nice rims, this isn’t a bad price.
“Warn overdrive, Flat 4 cyl, 3 spd, Tow bar, Roll cage, Bikini top, 2.5” lift, 33” BFG mud terrains, Hunter/Ice chest rack, Gas can rack. $2400 OBO. No trades.
Additional pictures at your request. Inquiries can be made via email or call (530) 383-0618.”
The front of this looks good, but I wonder why the rest of it isn’t shown?

(04/22/2010) Here’s a solid look Jeepster that hasn’t been restored yet.
“THIS IS A GREAT LITTLE 1950 WILLYS JEEPSTER FRESH OUT OF THE BARN……..I BOUGHT THIS JEEP ABOUT 35 YEARS AGO FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER, WHICH MAKES ME THE SECOND OWNER…….THIS JEEPSTER WAS ORIGINALLY BOUGHT NEW IN NEW HAMPSHIRE, AND DRIVEN TO UTAH IN THE 1960’S…….I PURCHASED IT AND HAVE HAD IT IN STORAGE EVER SINCE, WAITING FOR ME TO GET THE TIME TO RESTORE IT…….IT HAS ALWAYS RUN GREAT…..IT IS MECHANICALLY ALL ORIGINAL, WITH 4 CYLINDER OVER HEAD VALVE (F-HEAD) HURRICANE ENGINE, THREE SPEED TRANSMISSION, AND OVER DRIVE……THE JEEP WILL NEED A NEW BATTERY, FRESH FUEL, AND PROBABLY A TUNE UP, SINCE IT HAS BEEN SITTING FOR SEVERAL YEARS. WE ALSO REMOVED THE OLD GLAS BECAUSE IT WAS YELLOWING AND WE WANTED TO PUT NEW GLASS IN…..WE WEREN’T ABLE TO FINISH THAT PROJECT, SO IT WILL NEED SOME NEW GLASS….IT’S ALL FLAT GLASS, SO WON’T BE TOO EXPENSIVE. THE BODY ON THIS JEEP IS JUST ABOUT PERFECT, VERY SOLID, WITH NO RUST THROUGH, OTHER THAN A HOLE IN THE DIVER’S SIDE FLOOR BOARD, WHICH HAS BEEN PATCHED AT ONE TIME LONG AGO, AND WILL NEED TO BE PATCHED AGAIN. THIS CAR IS AN EXCELLENT CANDIDATE FOR RESTORATION, SINCE IT IS VERY STRAIGHT AND MECHANICALLY ALL ORIGINAL. CLEAR TITLE……”
After fixing the sprinklers and getting the lawn ready for summer, I decided it was too nice of a day to waste any more it, so I pulled out my trusty Idaho map and searched for a local drive I hadn’t tried yet.
Sure enough, there was a dirt road about 15 minutes north of me that meandered upwards 12 miles into the mountains until it reached Spring Valley Summit (4500′) on Highway 55 between the Treasure Valley and Horseshoe Bend.
It was perfect, as I live just off Hwy 55, so I could roar down the highway following my exploration into the ‘unknown’ and test out my new timing specs (I just readjusted the distributor to 13 degrees). With new jets and the timing dialed correctly, it seems to be running very well.
Along the way, I snapped a couple pics for your viewing pleasure. In this first pic, I’m near the beginning of the drive. That’s Squaw Butte in the background, which I’ve only climbed halfway so far (prior to having the jeep).
There were a number of mines along the drive. Why someone parked a car onto of the entrance is beyond me … Maybe it’s called the Rusty Auto Mine?
It looks nice and a good price.
“1949 Willys Jeepster convertible, 4 cylinder, 3 speed with overdrive, lots of new brake and front end parts, looks and drives good, recent “driver” quality paint job, seats recovered in brown corduroy, top and side curtains in great shape, newer radial tires, some bondo on rockers but rest of the body and frame are solid. Fun to drive and very collectible! Make an offer! 630-309-0269″
UPDATE: Was $2500. **SOLD**
This appears to be a great price on an updated CJ-3B.
“1960 Willys CJ, 289 Ford V8, 4 spd, 2500 firm must see. LOTS OF FUN!”

“1946 jeep willys small lift on 31s 4cyl stick 4wd good climber looking to trade for street legal railbuggy or ???? vehicles only or would sell for 2200 obo”
The body appears in good shape. This might be a good price if you can install a gas line (which should cost $20 or less).
“48 Willys CJ2A. Has a new gas tank that just needs hose run to Carb. Then engine will run. I have a few new parts that go along with it. Call Richard for specifics. (443)928-8739. Clean title in hand. Asking $2000 obo.”
It’s nice, but needs a tiny bit of work. I have a pic of this when it was red and for sale in colorado.
“1951 Willys CJ3A powered by 1979 Buick 3.8L V6. Original 3-speed manual trans with 2-speed transfer case and overdrive. Saginaw steering conversion with GM tilt wheel. 11″ front brakes, Superwinch free wheeling hubs, Superlift springs and shocks – 2″ or less lift. Nice ride. New aluminum radiator, electric cooling fan, CJ high back buckets, custom spare tire carrier, heater, 31×10.50 BFG mud terrain tires, 8″ or 10″ wide aluminum rims, original front and rear axle housings. Unsure of gear ratio. New single exhaust, tow hitch with 2” receiver. Bikini top only. This vehicle came from Colorado 6 months ago. Body is in very good condition. Has a small amount of rust under passenger side. Items needed – new or rebuilt carb, trans needs 2nd gear synchro, brakes need to be checked, needs emergency brake cable. A little bit of work will make this a really nice vehicle.
This runs and the plow works. The body sounds bad, but the deal sounds like a good one.
“1941 Jeep Willys 4×4 With Plow, Needs Carb Adjusted Or Kit Put On It. Rust and Voids On Body. Frame Solid. Most All Original. Pushes show well. Good 2 Track Runner.”

(05/05/2010) This looks like a good project.
“I am selling a 1955 Willys Overland, 2 wheel drive station wagon with a 283 Chevy engine and a Powerglide transmission. It will need some work to get running. Body is in very decent unrestored (never been painted) condition. It needs a full restoration but all in all a very good starting point. Asking $1,000”
UPDATE: Steve reports that this sold for $5600 with only two bids.
Jean-Sebastien spotted this unusual find.
“This is a Jeep FC 170 four wheel drive flat bed truck that has been made into a fire engine. This vehicle was originally used by the US forest service around Yosemite and later sold to a church camp just outside of the park. The vehicle was garaged and used by the church camp for insurance purposes. The vehicle is in extreemly good original condition. All equipment is stock except the windshield wiper motor which was changed to an electric model instead of the vacuum type. The vehcile runs strong and starts up promptly everytime. It has the 6 cylinder motor with a 3 speed manual transmission. Warren “free wheeling” hub caps to secure four wheel drive. The interior is in very good condition, as you can see by the pictures. The odometer shows 30,000 miles, but the speedometer cable broke so I can’t say what the actual mileage is. I would say not more than about 50,000 original miles. The fire apparatus has a 250 gallon tank with a 5 hp gas motor that both starts manually or with an electric push button starter. Pump works great and all seals seam to not leak. Vehicle comes with 200 feet of fire hose ( cotton single jacket), 150 of 1 1/2 and 50 ft of 1 inch. Two variable plastic nozzles with 1 1/2 fittings. There are two yellow helmets and a first aid kit. All gauges work (except the speedometer) and two new gauges were added for oil preasure and temperature. Body shows some signs on repair around the passenger door handle, but otherwise the vehicle is in good overall condition for the body. Vehicle runs fine and all mechanical parts work good. Brakes are in good condition as are tires, clutch and transmission. There is no slippage when shifting. This is a fairly rare vehicle and would be well suited for a ranch (for insurance purposes) or another church. Please e-mail any questions.”
The front appears rough.
“Artic Top for Military Jeep supposed to fit a 49 to 51 Willys jeep. Check pictures and help me out if you know more about it. Eric 509-263-0000.”
Dan spotted this one. FJ-40 prices are pretty crazy, making this FJ look like a good bargain. The seller is getting deployed and needs to sell quickly!
“I’m being deployed and I have priced my Landcruiser for quick sale! It has been very well taken care of and it comes with A LOT of extras! 1971 Landcruiser FJ-40

UPDATE: Jonathan points out that this sold for less than $1400 ($1356.13). Someone got a solid deal!
These Jeep-A-Trenches don’t appear every day. I love this beat up old jeep 🙂
“1948 willys jeep [but not really sure]. It is a nice early CJ with a period [first series] jeep a trench attachment. I also am including a period willys jeep option snow plow. It came off my 47 CJ. I planned on selling only the trencher but have a offer to buy another jeep with plow so I am selling the whole package. The jeep tub has rust and the roof is in rough shape also, it all can be put back together. The jeep run 3 yrs ago and I had it firing & running with gas down the carb but the starter stopped working. This is a rare piece and wouldnt take much to get it working again. It dug trenches for water, electric and a drain line over 150′ within the last 5yrs. It has good tires and a towbar for short towing. bill of sale only. no papers. Buyer to pickup or I have a local guy who can deliver it for a fee. Payment within days of end of auction. Email me with any questions.”
It’s hard to tell much from the pics.
“Very Good condition, Newer body, no rust or dents. Many New Parts!
