1955 CJ-3B Des Moines, IA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3B • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $4500

(10/21/09) Here’s a pretty stock CJ-3B.

“This old Willys was origjnally owned by the city of Templeton, IA. I bought it about a year ago from a farmer who used it just around the farm, mostly to give his kids and grand kids rides off road. It started and ran when I got it, but was not dependable, reliable or street legal. I’ve done a lot of work (documented) to this old Willys here in my shop to make it safe, reliable, dependable, legal and most of all fun. The 6 bolt system and all of the original wiring has been replaced with a complete 12 volt system with custom wiring throughout. It has dual tail lights with license light, park lights, turn signals with dash indicator and working self cancel, horn, 2 speed custom (CJ5 parts) wipers, 2 speed custom heater blower motor with defrost tube, interior lights and a 12 volt power receptacle under the dash for what ever ( I use it to plug in my phone). The original seats have been replaced with new cloth covered seat assemblies from Vanderhaag truck parts. The passenger seat has been adapted to fit the flip seat bracket to allow access to the floor mounted tool box. Seat belts are a set of dated Simpsons out of my old race car. The rear facing functional flip fold CJ5 back seat sits atop a custom built frame and has retractable seat belts for 2 out of an old K5 Blazer. The top is in excellent condition. I put it on new last year. The 4×4 works excellent. In LOW LOW this unit will go just about anywhere. I’ve had it off road in the mud, snow, dirt, sand, up and down hills and then right out onto the road and headed for home. There’s been alot more done to this old Willys, including rebuilt park brake, new fuel tank and sender, belt, hoses, wires, plugs, carb rebuilt, custom installed CJ5 roll bar, etc, etc, etc. It’s not beautiful.”

When Paul isn’t working on his Stainless M-38, he travels Alaska repairing airplanes.  He often brings along his camera and he recently sent me some of his pics.  Here’s 3 images by Paul that caught my eye.  Paul didn’t send any names to accompany his images, so I’ve presumptively added by own names:

I call this one — Ran When Parked

I call this one — Ran When Beached

And finally — Too Damn Cold to Run

UPDATE:**SOLD* Was $1500.

This is a project.

“Jeep – 1947 CJ2A.  F-Head motor (not original).  Engine just freshened new gaskets/ rings / cylinders honed / head rebuilt.  Runs great, no smoke no problems.  3 speed standard transmission.  4wd low & high works.  Transmission grinds a little but you would to if you were sixty three years old. Clutch seems to work fine.  Frame is solid. A little surface rust but in great shape for it’s age. Interior could use some love. The drivers seat cover is pretty much non-existant, I’m not sure what gauges on the dashboard work, there not original though. Someone put a keg in the back for a gas tank. Body seems good for what it is … Price is $1500 obo. Don’t need to sell it… I bought it with intentions of fixing it up, rebuilt the engine and somewhat lost ambition. If I dont get what I want, within reason, I’ll just keep it. ”

1957 DJ-3A Lansdale, PA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: DJ-3A This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1850.

This is a non-running jeep and has been converted to 4wd.

“1957 WILLYS JEEP DJ-3A 4X4 – RARE AND NEAT OLD JEEP WITH CLEAN & CLEAR PA TITLE!!!   I purchased this Willys Jeep just as it is, never did anything with it, and have too many other projects going, so I’ve decided to part with it. It is a very nice project for someone with more time and less projects then me. I can tell you what I know about it. This is a model DJ-3A V.I.N. #5633711806 Willys Jeep Dispatcher which makes it very rare and the fact thats its 4X4 a nice restoration project compared to a 2wd Dispatcher. Originally this particular truck was equiped with a complete steel enclosed cab/panel body (no side windows) and steel sliding doors (notice the original small running board area and full to floor foot opening that was on DJ-3A models with full cabs). The DJ-3A was based on the earlier (1949-1953) model CJ-3A Willys Jeep bodies not the later CJ-3B bodies normally used on other models after 1953. The complete and correct for DJ-3A models fold down windshield frame with glass is in the back (which appears to have been brand new and still in black primer) and has not been mounted though I do have the side mounting hardware to do so. The previous owner last ran and drove it, and had it PA inspected through 2006 though it has been sitting ever since. I tried to get it running but the engine appears to be seized from sitting. I suspect most likely the valves are stuck from the time it spent sitting which is common with these flathead engines. The carburetor appears to be a rebuilt unit and there is also an original used carburetor with it. The body is in decent shape for its age appearing to having work done to it here and there over the years. Someone over the years has cut out the vertical bars of the original grille and welded in steel mesh, personally I would prefer the original grille bars. The frame appears to be in pretty good shape being much better then most other early model Willys Jeeps I’ve seen over the years. It has the original (DJ-3A) rear mounted fuel tank with filler neck exiting out the right rear next to the tailgate”

1952 M-38 Glenburn, ME **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: M-38 This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was $1600.

As you can see in the pics, this is a project.

“this jeep has a 2.5″ suspension lift. Buick 231 V6 swap with a t90 transmission and dana 18 transfer. Original military axles with 5.38 gears (dana 44 rear, dana 25 front). I have the data plates as well as the serial plate. New plastic gas tank. Frame is in perfect condition, fenders are great, hood is a little dented but not rusty, tub needs floor pan work and some minor panel work. I bought this jeep to build an offroad toy with but just purchased a wrecked Wrangler Rubicon and dont have the time to build two jeeps (plus I have a Wrangler unlimited for my daily driver). I am negotiable a little bit on the price but dont waste my time with ridiculous offers. I have a ton of pictures I can email to serious buyers, currently the motor is out and on a stand in my shop, fenders hood and grill are removed and stripped of paint. I had planned to wheel the jeep in the body shop soon and replace the floors and do the body work.”

(01/08/2010) Check out the front part of the passenger side frame rail.  It looks like a giant piece of plate has been welded onto to it.  I suspect that’s not there to make it go faster!

“This old Willys runs and drives like it did 62 years ago! This would be perfect for a restoration project as it is only slighty modified with the lift and very little aftermarket items, or as a TURN-KEY off road toy. I would keep it if I could but bills and other projects take priority unfortunetly. Please call or email with any questions or offers”

A few years ago, Hemmings ran a post about an article they produced the CJ-4.  In the article, they discuss how the X-151 became the prototype CJ-4, the only one of it’s class made.  It was later sold to an employee, who later resold it to someone who stored it in a garage for years.

Crack in my engine block?

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This weekend I spent some time messing with my engine.  One of the concerns I have had was that the whitish smoke that still slips out of the intake manifold hasn’t gone away.  I had hoped that was simply the rings not sealing, but I don’t believe it is anymore.

While checking the engine closely on Saturday, I discovered that there was some whitish, oily residue on the roof of the oil breather, which suggests coolant in the oil.  My radiator level was also a little low. Between that, the smoke, and the fact that it runs a little rough when under pressure, I now believe that somewhere on my left bank there is a crack. I suspect it’s the REAL reason the seller of my engine stopped using it.

Fortunately, I have an extra 3.8L block that appears in good shape (I’m already using the heads and crankshaft).  I would have used that block initially, except that it’s bored .030, while my Hypereutectic pistons are made for a stock bore.  So, I guess I’ll go back to .030 bore and the pistons that came with that block.

So, I’m going to get my block dipped and cleaned, pull the engine, rip it apart, and put everything back together.  It sounds like some good weekend fun …. I’m might redo the radiator setup while I’m at it — I have a new idea for that.
