Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. I can’t tell a great deal from the pics, except that the colors match.

There’s some rough spots and it doesn’t run, but it still looks like it might be a good deal.
“Up for sale is a 1956 Willys CJ3B Jeep. This is “barn fresh” with a plow and some extra parts. This high hood Willys is all original and I am the third owner, to the best of my knowledge. It was driven to and parked in storage 2 years ago. It has not run since then. The original Hurricane, 4 cylinder motor is all there and the drive train is in tact and functional. The body is a bit rusty, but the frame is pretty solid. The black soft top on it is in pretty good shape. This Willys is being sold in “as is” condition. Someone with a bit of time and tinkering skills can be plowing this year or start a restoration project for Spring. Please e-mail or call with any questions.”

This has an unusual roll cage. Actually, I don’t know if those are bends in the bars or points. I’m not sure I’d want to roll and find out.

“42 Willys Jeep 4×4, 289 engine, T-10 trans, off-road tires. It has been in the garage for the last 25 years. I drove it in myself, so I know that it ran just fine. It will need a battery and the old gas drained. Other than that it needs lots of cleaning.”

“1942 or 43 Willys mb project jeep. Engine turns by hand serial # MB- 240927 Transmission/transfer seem good. Body is very rough but has a good grill and fender. Throw a replacement body on get it running and enjoy. Even has bullet holes in the windshield (I didn’t put them there; so who knows) Also some original paint and markings and showing through. This is probably a replacement body, since there is no battery box.
“It has been completely restored and modified. I have over 20K invested. There is no rust on it. It has a Kenne Bell Built Buick 225 V-6 pushing over 325HP; it has a Saginaw 4 speed manual transmission Spicer 18 twin stick, 2″ body lift, Dana 44 rear axle, and Dana 25 front axle with 538 gears. It has a Saginaw steering conversion very nice to drive. The tub has been Rhino lined top and bottom the engine compartment has been Rhino lined also. It has been converted to a 12 Volt system. It has brand new gauges, shifters, a yellow top Optima battery, and all new wiring, everything is all top of the line no detail has been over looked. I have all the receipts for all of the work that has been done to it and everything that has been bought for it”

This appears very nice, though there has been some body work done (no drain holes and it appears the tailgate might have been removed. The top looks pretty classic. Finally, this is a very early CJ-3A with a serial number of 11060.

Bill Spears really seems to like Bantams of all kinds. He’s got a website extensively devoted to exploring Bantams, including a detailed look at the beginning of the jeep. His information seems consistent with what I’ve learned, though I wasn’t familiar with the Checker connection noted below.
Bill also has a list of Bantams, some with pictures and some just a rumor. He also has gathered some images of Bantams in service. Finally, Bill explores the relationship, or inter-relationship, between the “Checker Bantams”, which he calls a CRC, and the Bantam BRC. It’s an interesting read.

Ok, I’m a big fan of The Find! I just did a search on “Front Fender Flares for CJ-2A” and found someone who still sells them. I know there’s been several people looking for these. Despite my google search attempts, I haven’t had any luck locating them until now. Click on the Ad below to go directly to the ACME site.
I did a search on a “CJ-5 gas tank” and stumbled across a website called “The Find“. It had search results from Tellico, zaib4x4, 4 wheel parts, and a variety of others. So, I did a few more searches. It looks like a great way to compare online prices. They have an iphone app as well.

It’s hard to tell a lot from the small pictures, but this appears to be a project. Note how far forward the radiator is positioned. I hope that’s not where it attaches.

Sebastian, whom I mentioned in this post (a couple posts down), taught me a couple things about Willys in Colombia today.
1) Willys are very popular in Colombia. They started arriving during the 50’s and immediately became a sensation. They are still used regularly in the coffee plantations. He assures us that every single coffee beam that we enjoy in a Colombian Coffee has been transported at some point in a Willys (most probably a CJ-3B). There are cities and towns where you can see Willys everywhere, being used as work vehicles. For somebody from this country it would be like going back on time. They are also used as taxis, carrying people by the dozen. [Editor’s note: Nice work Sebastian; I am sold on a trip to Colombia :-)]
2) There are many Jeep festivals in Colombia. Most of them occur between September and October; they are called “Yipaos”. The festivals were started in 1988. The vehicles are driven through the main streets of a city and the Jeeps with the largest amount of objects carried with the most harmonious arrangements earn prizes. In fact, in February 2006, a Guinness World Records was established for the “Longest Jeep Parade” in Calarca, with a caravan of over 370 Jeep Willys vehicles. It seem to me that we need to break that record back! Here’s an article about it on the CJ-3B page.
Sebastian also sent me a powerpoint with some nice big pictures of one festival. You just gotta see it to believe. Check out the mud flaps … I’ve been looking for some older looking mud flaps!
As I mention in the post below, Sebastian wrote me yesterday and told me a little about the Flat Fender Club of Butler. As I understand it, Sebastian launched the club website last year. It sounds like it’s kind of an ‘open source’ club.
Sebastian writes, “The Flat Fender Club of Butler is a very nice group. I am doing my best to help out. A friend of mine from Colombia helped me with the logo and the t-shirt design and I started the blog at the beginning of the summer. The club is very informal, with no dues and no officers, only the president and founder Dave Zibrat (great guy!). Butler is the place where the “Bantam” factory was located (the building is still there), and therefore it is the place where everything related to Jeep started.”
It appears several of the club members are readers of ewillys and I look forward interacting with more.
Yesterday (and today) I have enjoyed some correspondence from Sebastian, who hails from Colombia and currently resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
In 1994, Sebastian and his father (who owns a blue CJ-3A), rebuilt a red 1954 CJ-3B, which can be seen to the right and viewed at the CJ-3B Page (sixth down from the top).
He writes, “My Willys is still in Colombia, so I only ride a couple times a year. Last May I went there for a week and put more than 250 miles on the jeep in less than five days. A couple years ago I became aware, and joined, the “Flat Fender Club of Butler” which is close to Pittsburgh. Butler is the place where the “Bantam” factory was located (the building is still there) and, therefore, it is the place where everything related to the Jeep started. The club is formed by a very nice group of people who are crazy about old willys. UPDATE: I had installed this adjustable pressure regulator from TA performance when I built the engine. Today I attempted to adjust the regulator to lower my pressure, but it was already adjusted as far out as I could adjust it. So, took it out and replaced it with the original stock spring and plug. Sure enough, the pressure dropped to 50psi on idle, though it still climbs to 70psi when revving the engine.
Maybe this is related to all buicks and not just the buick v6?? I’m wondering if my oil pressure is too high, which is causing a couple problems, such as oil dripping out the dipstick hole where the dipstick meets the block.
It seems to me my that on my old 225 odd fire, the pressure was around 40psi and would drop as I accelerated (which was a problem, that finally resolved itself when my engine blew up after about 3 years of good use).
Now, it sticks solidly at 70psi and that’s without a high volume oil pump. I have a concern that the oil will be spraying rather than dribbling out the mains, which might cause some problems as well? (I read that somewhere) I can resolved the problem easily by putting weaker spring in .. I should have one somewhere.
Any thoughts? I tried to find something on the internet. The only think I found was that a normal 225 v6 runs about 40psi.
