Year? CJ-3A Kansas City, Mo $600

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

year_cj3a_kansascityGiven the windshield appears in good shape, I’d say this is a good price for this parts jeep.

‘rebuilt carb, new head gasket, needs distributer and should run. the tub is pretty rusty but other than that it is pretty decent for use off road or parts. Might consider partial trade for a stick welder, oxy-fuel torch or other welding equipment. “

1950 CJ-3A Stearns, Ky $1400

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

1950_cj3a_stearnsDespite what the seller writes, it looks like there’s more than a little rust on this body.  But, if the rust isn’t too bad, then this might be a decent price.

“I am selling a 1950 Willys CJ3 for my father. He bought it and did a little work to it but doesnt have the time to restore it(or sell it). It has a clear KY title. The jeep is located in Stearns, Ky, 42647.    The Good: runs, drives, brakes work(enough anyway), new alternator, new battery, replaced radiator, new exhaust from the manifold back, tow bar, extra carburator, very little rust(for a 59 year old jeep). The Bad: carburator floods sometimes when you first start it(once its going it goes though), brakes need work(but they will stop you). The Ugly: windshield cracked, paint very rough, hood patched(somebody had a scoop on it), mismatched seats. I am asking $1400.00 O.B.O. “

It’s a good looking GPW.

“Originally purchased privately in January of 1983 in Heightstown, New Jersey.  Has been garage kept since purchase, and believed to have been prior to also.  It was primarily used for parades, re-enactments and static displays.  Entire body and interior is original, including seat covers, ID plates, and windshield.  Body was stripped down and repainted.  Some additional body work and mechanical work required to get into show condition.  Still has 6 volt system, may need new wiring harness.  Generator rebuilt in late 1980’s.  Motor rebuilt at time of purchase.  Shimmy in front end when driven and small stone chip in driver’s side of windshield.”

Jeep starts up right away and runs, but it needs a complete restoration or you can keep it as is with a little brake work for you ranch. It has a light blue color we believe is original. 1946_cj2a_ct1UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $6500.

The $6500 is a buy it now price on eBay.  Apparently the Seller has 2 other offers made via eBay as well.  This appears to be on the boarder between a VEC and an EC CJ-2A.  The seller is only the 2nd owner.  Too bad a floor shifter was swapped into it.  It looks quite nice.

“Here is an original 46 willys cj2a that I bought 7 years ago off the original owener who purchased the jeep new in 1946 and used it on his farm in Easton CT.  The jeep is still in running condition after all those years and only has 27000 miles.  the way you see it is pretty much the way I bought it,  I replaced the fuel pump, plugs , and plug wires.  The jeep starts right up and will even start with the original hand crank!  The motor at times has a skip to it, so it may need the carb rebuilt eventually but does not smoke or knock. The jeep drives great and will do almost 50mph it handles good and does not shimmy at any speed.  It is really fun speed around back roads in this little jeep! At some point it was converted from column shift to floor shift, it is still 6 volt and has its original wiring harness….”

WWI Four Wheel Drive Star — Nash Quad

• CATEGORIES: Features, Unusual • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

It was one of those days where I was searching for one thing and found another:  The Nash Quad Truck (the truck to the right is a 1919 Nash Quad, Owned by Bruce and Melanie Rice #8880).  These are 4wD with four wheel steering.  (see the video below to see a quad and its steering in action)

It turns out, these were a big hit during World War I.  In the Story of the Jeep, Patrick Foster writes that the Quad ” … dramatically proved it’s worth … and proved the value of four wheel drive …”

Here’s a brief history from the Pioneer Flight Museum:

The Nash Quad was first manufactured in 1914 by the Thomas B. Jeffrey Company, which was located in Kenosha, Wisconsin. It became quite popular during World War I and was used by the armed forces of not only the United States, but also Russia, France and Britain. One of the first motor vehicles to offer four-wheel drive, the Quad proved very suitable to the rough, unpaved roads of the time. In 1916, Jeffrey sold the production rights to the Nash company. Because of its popularity, it was produced in large numbers, including license production by Hudson, National, and Paige-Detroit. Exact numbers aren’t known, but apparently over 11,000 were produced in 1918 alone.

Here’s a video of a Nash Quad being started and driven:

Old Willys Image Archive — Brian finds a treasure trove

• CATEGORIES: Bantam-FordGP-WillysMA-EarlyJPs, Website • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Our eWillys Michigan bureau, lead by Brian (and staffed only by Brian), uncovered a treasure trove of images, most I haven’t seen before, of early jeep demonstrations, publicity images and more.

Brian writes, “the source is the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library and, best of all, it is free!!!   Here is the Search link   http://66.213.36.25/.  To Link to the library image collection explanation, go here http://www.toledolibrary.org/collection/images.asp.  I think one of the best sets are the Farm Jeep trials in New Hudson Michigan..Wow”

Here is some of the searches he has done: (Willys jeeps) (willys workers) (Jeep automobiles) (farm Jeep) (Willys factory) (Military).

Here’s some of the images found using the search term “jeep” — note that the term search term jeep doesn’t yield other pictures that I saw while surfing this site this morning.

I’m not sure I’d want to be in the vehicle in the pic below….

1948_cj2a_winsteadA reader named Jim forwarded this interesting CJ-2A.  The body appears in very good shape.  It sports a column shift and a PTO.  It appears to have a CJ-3B windshield. With the 3 dash panels and the column shifting, I’d guess this (or part of it) is actually a mid 1946 rather than a 1948.

1941_ford_gpUPDATE: **SOLD** Was $24,500.

This rare Ford GP is listed at £17,500, which currently converts to $24,500.  It was listed back in June of 2008 on the Willysjeep.com site, which is a UK based jeep site. I assume it’s still for sale as it’s still listed on their website for sale.  There are also a GPW, some MBs and some Hotchkiss jeeps for sale there as well.

“A very Rare Pre-Production Ford GP Jeep (1941). This is one of only a handfull that remain in the UK today. Restored to a high level. For more information, please call today on 01694 731373. The 1940 Buddy (a Ford Pygmy/Budd prototype)

• CATEGORIES: Bantam-FordGP-WillysMA-EarlyJPs • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

1940_budd_ford8In late 1940, after testing the Bantam prototype BRC (the Mark I) for one month,  the Quartermaster Corp Technical committee was impressed enough to ask Bantam for 70 additional pilot versions to test (these would be the BRC-60 or Mark IIs).  They also asked Willys and Ford to submit prototypes.  While Willys submitted a two wheel Quad for testing (they made another prototype: a 4 wheel steering Quad), Ford built 2 prototypes: one is the Pygmy (still exists) and the other was a Pygmy/Budd prototype called a Buddy. (Note that I attempt to use the same designations for pilot/prototype that Frederic Coldwell uses in his Preproduction Civilian Jeeps book.)

While the Ford Pygmy was submitted to the Quartermaster for testing, the Pygmy/Budd hybrid was not.  The history is hazy, but the original Budd disappeared into the California desert at some point. Miraculously, it was relocated by Jeff Polidoro in 1998.  The rumor is that is sold for $50,000 and was restored in 2005- 2006 by owner Fred Smith. There’s more about Fred Smith and his restoration of this vehicle.  The Buddy is now located in the UK.

The biggest difference between the Pygmy and Buddy, to the best of my information, was that the body was built by the Edward G. Budd Manufacturing and looked fairly different from the Pygmy.  Below are pictures I’ve collected across the internet about the Budd. Apparently, Budd also designed the KubelWagon body prior to WWII.   And, apparently, Budd had a role in designing the M151.

Here’s before and after pics of the Pygmy/Budd that I’ve found across the net:

1948_cj2a_italySomething appears to have been done to the bumper, but otherwise this looks like it could make a great, pretty easy restoration project.

“This is a very collectable 1948 CJ2A Jeep Willys- I am firm on the price of this 60 year old vehicle. It runs good and has the original engine. I have done some restoration which includes:
New brakes and brake lines, new gas tank, new carberator and tune up, new muffler and tail pipe. This has all of the original frame an body matching numbers. This would be a great restoration vehicle and fun to drive in parades or around the farm or ranch. Serious inquiries only- 214-797-0911”

1945 MB Bend, OR **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: MB • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

1945_mb_bendUPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

“Rare 1945 Military Willys Jeep MB and M416  1/4T trailer built by Cemsco Div of ETS Hokin. The Jeep was built 1-30-1945 and delivered to the Navy, likely for California shore duty. It is very complete, with folding headlamps, blackout lights, hand grips and more. There is no structural or panel rust. The only rust is superficial. Good floors. A light sandblast would clean it all up. No panels need to be replaced. All are intact. No body damage. The vehicle is in original, unrestored condition. The only modifications are at the front bumper for the tow bar. I have had the engine running, and it all seems good. The brake cylinders are frozen…so it would need a full brake job, but after that, I would bet it could be driven as is….a bit of a time warp there.

There are (5) five restored wheels, powdercoated, with new military tires. There is no top or top bows, but all the mounting brackets are intact. There are miscellaneous extras, such as a windshield assembly, a cylinder head, flywheel and more.”

This appears to be in pretty good condition. The seller is trying to claim mileage of only 5800, but I’m very sure that’s a replacement speedometer (as are several of the other gauges).  I suspect the front turn signals/pking lights are after market as well.

“What an amazing vehicle!  This jeep was given to a Tennessee Forrest Ranger as a retirement gift, and he held onto it unitl I bought it  3 months ago!  It runs out really well…has new tires…a working original WENCH and PTO GEARS underneath for FARM ATTACHMENTS… The engine is a HURRICANE 4 cyl with 3 speed transmission…4WD…5800 ORIGINAL miles and the ORIGINAL PAINT, as well…I’ve been through many jeeps, and I have to say that I’ve never seen another like this!  it’s truly ONE-OF-A-KIND!”

1957_fc170_burbankUPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1200

This is the second FC listed by this seller.

“Hard to find Willys Jeep FC 170. A 1957 the first year made. This was an old movie camera truck. The bed is missing. The cab is in real nice shape compared to most FC’s. Great cab corners and no rust around the windshield. The original 226 motor, trans and transfer case is there. There was a PTO that was removed so that’s why you see a hole in the back of the trans. All it needs is a plate made to cover the hole. The motor doesn’t run. Cracked windshield and door glass.”
