Builds: Kurtis finds Ike and starts a restoration

In early April of 2010, Kurtis found a solid looking, stock 1950 CJ-3A named Ike that he plans to restore to off-the-dealer-floor condition.  He’s built a website (http://kurtisfranklin.com/blog/) to chronicle his restoration adventures and recently provided some good details on a V-Cell Radiator.

Good luck on your restoration Kurtis; I think it will turn out well!  Here’s a pic of Ike:

Apparently, this is a Navy CJ-3A.  It appears there is a data plate above the standard data plate on the dash that could very well document this.  That said, it seems like it should be painted navy colors rather than in a cammo pattern.

“Fully reconditioned 1953 Willys Jeep. Originally assigned to the Navy. Restoration includes rebuilt motor, transmission, rewiring, steering and suspension. Non-directional military tires, tow hitch, and roll bar. Runs great, super fun to drive!

This looks very solid. The seller listed this as a ’42.

“This Jeep would be great for someone looking to do a restoration project. The engine and transmission run, only 57,456 miles on the vehicle with good tires. I put in new seats and gas tank. The only thing it needs is a new fuel line which would be really simple to do on a vehicle like this. With work and school I dont have the time to play with it anymore. I am asking 5,000 or you can throw me an offer. phone: 402-250-3674.”

1953 CJ-3A Tuttle, Ok **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $2200.

I just found an earlier posting for this Jeep I had done last year.  It was priced at $4600 in July 2009. So, the price has dropped quite a bit. It was listed as a 1952 at that time.

It appears someone has put some money into this build.  It looks like it comes with a winch and nice cage.  Replacing the brakes is a pretty cheap project. This might be a steal!

“This was confiscated in lieu of debt from an old friend in 2005. The last time it drove was 2006…from Minco to Bridgecreek. It drove GREAT…although it had and still has no brakes. It’s only been started two or three times since then. I’m not mechanically inclined enough (or at all) to get it running to sell for more.  It definitely needs a new fuel pump, carbeurator cleaning, plugs, and new lines in and around both…as they spew fuel when running. I believe the gas tank to be the culprit for the fuel problems…its rusted out pretty good.  New Tires, Winch, Motor Rebuilt in 2003. Please give me a holler if you’re truly interested. I encourage you to come take a look. I can get a hold of some more pictures if needed.”

A CJV-35U and a Lost Opportunity

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A, News • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Well, I completely blew it.  I’m ashamed, embarrassed.  Truly, I wasn’t thinking clearly.  Too much stuff was clogging my brain tunnels to put the pieces together.  Here’s the sad, brief tale …

Late yesterday afternoon the ‘staff’ (also known as Brett) at the Utah Bureau of eWillys spotted a great deal:  A 1948 flattie for only $1000.  It appeared almost completely stock, with no obvious rust, though there was plenty of paint oxidation.

It had unusual bezels, a CJ-3Aish windshield, a cutout for a breather on the passenger side of the hood and hooks on the front.  It was an odd combo of a M-38, a CJ-3A and titled with a year of 1948. Also, strangely, it had no willys script on the hood that I could see.

My gut said go get it.  My practical side said no, so I put it out of my head.  I should have listened to my gut, because after thinking about, I now realize it was  CJV-35U that was running, extremely stock (except for the installation of the bench seat), and in great shape.

OHHH THE PAINNN!!!!  How did I not put those clues together?  Unfortunately, only an hour or so after I made my decision not to get it, it disappeared from the KSL classified list.  So, the decision was made for me and I put it out of my mind.  It wasn’t until this morning that I realized how big my mistake had been.

Alas, this too shall pass, slowly, painfully, like a kidney stone.

Here’s a perfect example of what it looked like (I didn’t get the chance to download the pics of it).  Imagine this, unrestored, without the breathers for the intake and exhaust … and with a hardtop: http://www.cj3a.info/sibling/cjv35u/photos/p158.html (or click on the above link)

The Saugus EMV CJ-3A

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A, Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Somewhere around 1950 the Emergency Management Folks in Saugus, Massachusetts, bought a CJ-3A as an all-around emergency vehicle.  As you can see by the emergency boat (being towed by the Jeep in the 2nd pic below), this isn’t a high budget operation, but then this town of 26,000 probably didn’t need much more (though they did invest in a DUKW in the late ’50s).

Sixty years later, Saugus still has the CJ-3A (at least it looks the same with minor additions).  Sporting the code name ‘Unit 41’, it seems this EMV handles emergency parades more than anything these days.

You can see more of the early Saugus EMVs here, including the original Seagrave Pumper from 1919.

It’s nice, but needs a tiny bit of work.  I have a pic of this when it was red and for sale in colorado.

“1951 Willys CJ3A powered by 1979 Buick 3.8L V6. Original 3-speed manual trans with 2-speed transfer case and overdrive. Saginaw steering conversion with GM tilt wheel. 11″ front brakes, Superwinch free wheeling hubs, Superlift springs and shocks – 2″ or less lift. Nice ride. New aluminum radiator, electric cooling fan, CJ high back buckets, custom spare tire carrier, heater, 31×10.50 BFG mud terrain tires, 8″ or 10″ wide aluminum rims, original front and rear axle housings. Unsure of gear ratio. New single exhaust, tow hitch with 2” receiver. Bikini top only. This vehicle came from Colorado 6 months ago. Body is in very good condition. Has a small amount of rust under passenger side. Items needed – new or rebuilt carb, trans needs 2nd gear synchro, brakes need to be checked, needs emergency brake cable. A little bit of work will make this a really nice vehicle.

The fix for the engine can’t be that complex.

“Red, low mileage, original drive train, engine, PTO, towbar, near new top, good body, 12 volt conversion. “As is” This jeep ran purrfectly until one day I had the hood up while it was running and was bragging to my neighbor how smooth it ran. I then closed the hood, it stopped running and I couldn’t get it started after that. I’m not a mechanic and haven’t a clue what it might be. I think this car would be have a NADA value of approximately $10,000.00 if it were running today. Please look at the pictures below and call me with any questions.”

The underside of the body looks pretty good. It has had a few patches, as if the body used to have powersteering (hole in the grille) and a F-head motor (hole in the hood).

“I’m listing this for a friend.  It has a 225 V6, T-90, T18 Transfer case, larger brake kit. Bodys fair-, but is workable. Comes with a spare hood and grille for repairing. Runs and drives, goes thru the gears ok and brakes work. Frame is good with no weird plates welded on or holes drilled. Needs glass, windshield in good shape. windshield vent works, needs bracket to hold open. For a do it yourself, it could turn out real clean without putting alot of cash in it.”
