The sellers claims this is from 1942, which would make it a pretty early model. The shovel on the passenger side is interesting.
“You are looking at what could possibly be THE FIRST MODEL KIT EVER PRODUCED (1942), as this one was the precursor to plastic kits…it is the “WEST-CRAFT- U.S. ARMY JEEP”, made by WEST-CRAFT MFG. CO. Please look carefully at the pics to see the excellent condition it is in…the only issue is a small tear on the end flap of the box, so, IF YOU ARE A ViNtAgE MODEL KIT COLLECTOR/BUILDER then BE SURE NOT TO PASS UP THE OPPORTUNITY TO OWN THIS COOL PIECE @ THIS AUCTION’S END!!!”

Josh was in downtown Boise on Saturday morning with his son watching the holiday parade when two flatfenders appeared. He said they were both named “sidewinder” and both had 4 wheel steer with dual steering wheels. He said they were going a decent speed doing donuts or driving at an angle.
He snapped the picture below and then found a video of them. The jeeps show up at the 17 sec mark and then really show at the 44 sec mark. I’ll see if I can dig up some more info on these in the future.
The August 1941 issue of The Ford Dealer News includes this image of a Ford Pygmy. There are a variety of articles and other photos also.
I like the box too.
“willys jeepster balsa wood model 1948-1949 it appears that all parts are there.very rare item”
John took the time to scan the jeep related pictures from Bill Maudlin’s book “Up Front”. I’ve posted a couple below. You can see all of them on John’s Google Page. In 2010, the US Postal Service honored Bill with his own stamp.
You can find the book “Up Front” on Amazon (both in new and used versions and at Alibris.

UPDATE: Learn more about the green jeep in the comments section.
Upon learning about the jeep at the Fantastic Cavern’s Visitor Center in Springfield, Missouri, Bill had to see it for himself. Fortunately for us, he took along his camera. Since Friday is the official start of the Christmas season, even though ‘Black Friday’ has now leaked into the evening of ‘Turkey, Christmas presents in the back of jeep just seemed a perfect way to launch the season (for us Willys nuts anyway).
Here’s photos of the original jeep. Bill was told it was a CJ-2A, but it seemed more 3A to him.
Here are some pics of the new propane fueled jeeps:
According to Glenn, “My buddy in Sylvania, Ohio says this car didn’t survive long as it was hit at a railroad crossing. This is the only one they did, announced in a few press outlets, and the project promptly (quietly) abandoned.”
This photo is printed on 16″x20″ paper.
Glenn spotted this rare badge. I hadn’t known about the Aircraft Division.
“Up for auction is a Vintage WWII Security ID Badge from Willys Overland Aircraft Division the badge is in great shape please the Badge size is 1-3/4 inches by 2-1/4 inches see the pictures.”
John took the time to scan Male Call comic strips that contain jeeps and post them at his google page. Surprisingly, most of the drawings appear to be Ford GPs. You can view the cover of the book here.
He writes, “My Dad had a copy of this printing of Milt Caniff’s Male Call and had it stashed in the back of a dresser drawer. Fair game for a 12-year-old when I ‘discovered’ it in ’64. Don’t know what happened to his copy. Saw a copy on Amazon and grabbed it. I scanned all the images that include all or part of a Jeep in the strip. Consider this a fresh look, enjoy!”
I’d like to see more of this one.
“Vintage original brochure, very good condition. I believe this brochure is from 1965 if I am reading the printing code right.”
I thought I had posted this already, but don’t think i had. Anyway, starting price is only $20.
“Vintage 1968 REMCO Mighty Mike Cobra Skyway Balancing Kit Set with original box and instructions. Has all of the original parts except 1 metal weight. There are no cracks or breaks on any part. Everything will be bubble wrapped to prevent damage in shipping and all voids filled to prevent any rattling. Can be wrapped in heavy shipping paper for 3 pounds shipping or in a box for 5 pounds shipping. Quoted shipping price is for 5 lbs, will be less for 3 lbs.”
This has already hit $110 . . .
“if your looking for a very nice Antique or Vintage 1960,s Tonka Jeep Wrecker diecast model toy this is it! this is a 1960’s Model Jeep Wrecker made by Tonka toys. it is about 10 inches long by 6 inches high, and about 5 iches wide something like a 1/16 scale. this vintage collectors Jeep is very rare it is almost like in new condition, only for a few small spots of paint missing and they are very small. and this also comes with its original Box and is also in good condition and its rare to find a Jeep in this condition with a original box this nice also. I have added many pictures to show how nice this Jeep is and there is no rust at all on it also as you can see from top to bottom of Jeep. I am selling this for a friend that needs money pretty bad or he would not be wiiling to sell this special Jeep, for he was giving this from his Grandmother in the early 1960’s and has kept it in storage and never really played with it, it also has the original string and hook from the Jeeps wrecker. he going to star it at a great starting price well below its worth.”
Joseph might look pretty young to own his first vehicle, but after a trip to Moab with his dad Pete, who runs the OWF, to attend the 2012 Willys Overland Rally Joseph caught a bad case of the Willys sickness. As his father knows to well, there is no cure for this dreaded disease. With Joseph’s fate sealed, he decided to buy a wagon with his own money that he could rebuild himself (with some help from dad).
The wagon needs plenty of work, so they located a good donor frame that’s already been modified and strengthened, saving them lots of time and work. They have collected some ’76 Wagoneer axles, XJ rear and YJ front springs to fit the already modified frame. They also have located a variety of additional parts to help round out Joseph’s project.
You can follow Joseph’s build here: http://oldwillysforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=3549
Good luck Joseph! I’m sure you’ll learn a lot 🙂
Pete from the OldWillysForum took a break from life and headed to the hills of Stanley, Idaho, with his wagon and a GoPro Hero2 camera. I’m going to check into getting one of those cameras.
