Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Ron Fitzpatrick recently revealed two parts GPAs he apparently has acquired, which I imagine he will transform into one? Anyway, I wanted to highlight the green one, as it is one of the oddest modified GPAs I’ve ever seen. Likely from the 1940s, this seems a good price on an old amphibious model jeep kit. I have one already or I would buy it.

These photos appeared in the Des Moines Register on March 17, 1943.
This news reel features three segments. The middle one is especially interesting as it shows Ford GPA Seeps zipping around a park in Philadelphia, then jumping into a lake.

This April 4, 1943, article in the Sunday Star shares more about the things the military was doing with jeeps (not the best scan, but it’s all I got).
This July 15, 1945, article in the Evening Star featured a great shot of Ford GPAs. I thought the article was interesting, too. It highlights the challenges of managing war surplus (links to page 1 and page 2 of original article).
I just picked up this U.S. Army Amphibian Jeep model (1/2″ scale). It’s dated 1943 from the Mod-Ac Manufacturing Company, LA, California. It looks complete. I’ve never run across a reference to these being called “Quacks”, but it makes sense given the larger ones are referred to as “Duks”.
Here’s a video of some “Quacks” in action during their testing dates at the Ford Rouge Plant. Lots of video shots I have never seen.
The GPA doesn’t look customized to me. However, the photo itself looks doctored, as if the GPA wasn’t photographed at that spot.

A Ford GPA to the rescue!
“1943 Press Photo Army amphibious jeep delivers food to flooded hotel. This is an original press photo. With downtown Logansport IN inundated by the Wabash River guests stranded at the Barnett Hotel received their food via an Army amphibious jeep during the worst flood the area has known since 1913. Photo measures 8 x 6.25inches. Photo is dated 06-19-1943.”
This photo was posted by Brendan Gibbons to Facebook. It shows his uncle driving a Ford GPA in 1946.
I don’t think I’ve seen this one in a press photo.

“1942 WWII Willy’s MB with GPA rear end. Jeep frame has the original tag. Has a good front and rear end, good windshield, and two combat seats. Body is rough but parts are salvageable. Comes with many parts, two L134 Engine blocks, one Willys head, t90 transmission, and a Novak correct transfer case. The reared is marked GPA 4025. Asking $1000 but price is negotiable.”
