1947 & 1948 Articles about Sam and Julian Kipnis

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images, Old News Articles This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This short article in the January 02, 1948, issue of the Arizona Post featured a photo of this father and son team to “prove” they were in WWII together. There time in WWII did not quite go as planned, but you can read that in the article at the bottom. There’s more on Sam’s life, including his time as South Tucson’s mayor, in the book: What They Saved: Pieces of a Jewish Past.

Here’s the October 03, 1947, story that led to the photo published above …. (note the next to the last paragraph is cutoff in the original article for some reason; only one line shows “Kipnis are trying to forget … “).

This image shows a young girl and her Sherwood Lightening peddle jeep. I found what I think are images of a good example of this model (seen at bottom).

According to one site, this Sherwood Lightning Express pedal jeep was produced from 1947-1950 . Sherwood later became Hamilton.

Dean Martin and a Jeepster Commando

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Mike shared this photo that was drifting around Facebook. It’s clip of Dean Martin behind a Jeepster Commando. According to the Facebook post, “Dean Martin, Senta Berger, Janice Rule, and a ‘67 Jeepster Commando Station Wagon. From the 1967 Matt Helm film “The Ambushers”.” As Derek Redmond pointed out, it’s not the only Jeep in that movie.

The Internet Movie Car Database has even more pics from the movie. In fact, Jeepster Commandos appeared in a variety of movies: https://www.imcdb.org/vehicles_make-Jeep_model-Jeepster+Commando.html

Vintage Dealer Photo from Galax, Virginia

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Chris spotted this Jeep dealer photo taken in Galax, Virginia, on a Carroll County Facebook page. If you look carefully, you’ll see the round ‘Service’ Jeep sign (painted?) on the building with an extra large “P”.

There’s still a Mink Motor Sales company that sells used cars. I can’t tell if this venture is the same location as shown in in the pic below.

I wish the pic and caption were better reproduced in this scanned newspaper, but the December 02, 1948, article in Montana’s Choteau Acantha newspaper demonstrates how surprised some civilians were by the jeep’s capabilities. The writer mentions Black Leaf Canyon, which is south of Glacier National Park.

1943 Image of Wounded on Jeep

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images, Old News Articles This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This 1943 image shows a crowd gathered around a jeep as it carries a wounded American. There are several articles about the war with Japan in this August 23, 1943, issue of the Daily Illini, but what caught me by surprise was Northwest Airlines’ attempt to secure a direct air route from Alaska to Tokyo even almost two years before the war eventually ended, as if we weren’t at war with Japan! Talk about advanced planning.
