Classic Jeep Racing Photos from Yakima, Washington

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images, Racing • TAGS: , .

These photographs were taken by Ron Day, who wrote articles about the races and has hundreds of additional photos.  I’ve contacted him, thanked him for publishing the photos, and asked if he had any additional information he could share.  Ron now lives in Alaska and continues to photograph.  You can see his website here:

This is a link to his jeep photos:

Racer driving modified racing willys jeep through the mud in Yakima

Not all the vehicles were modified.  Many 1970s racers were trail jeeps with winches and tow bars still attached, such as this drag racer.

Newhouse Hi-Performance Equipment from 1952

• CATEGORIES: Engine, Features, Racing

Glenn forwarded a couple pages of this old catalog for hi-performance parts that included a few for the jeep.  He sent these to me after a short discussion with Scott, who races using F-head and L-head motors (more on that to come).

According to Scott, “I have bored them up to .092 oversized and I have had about 6 different cams made by crane cams.  The motor I have had the best luck with so far is .060 over with dome style pistons.  It has 1.7 ratio roller rockers.  It is a F head. I cut the side of the head open and welded the water jackets and built an intake manifold that is 8″ high.  With a 500 cfm holley ive been able to get 7000 rpm out of it.”

Scott’s experimentation has been done simultaneous to Sam at Flatfender Willys, who experimented, just for fun, with hi-po parts in a flat head with modern honda fuel injection. Sam did a few other things to the engine, but I don’t precisely remember what.  Sam and a friend drove the motor hard, before it finally gave out, though a couple transfer cases and a drive line gave out before the motor did.

Here are the two pages from Glenn.

Mark reports that the recent edition of Hot Rod Deluxe Magazine has a variety of jeep pictures in it.  Here are a couple.  I have yet to pick up my copy.

This nice little gem features a ton of Willys cars, trucks and quite a few Willys Jeeps as well. See pics attached. Page 6 features the first Four Wheel Drive Grand Prix in 1965 with allot of Jeeps in the pic. Page 33 features Bob Panella’s huge collection of Willys cars and trucks. Scattered throughout the rest of the pages you will find race jeeps and tricked out jeeps from back in the day which are pretty cool.”

1959 Wagon Rio Rancho, NM **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Jeep Rods, Racing, Willys Wagons • TAGS: , .

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $19,950.

“I have an absolutely awesome 59 Willys Wagon Pro Street. It has a professionally built full square tube chassis and a Mustang 2 front end with rack and pinion steering. The 14 point cage was certified for 8.80s about 16 years ago. This was a drag car converted to a 9.0 second pro street car. It has a full roller, blown small block 400 punched to a 406 with an 8 quart oil pan, MSD ignition, E curve distributor and Wiend 671 Blower . Included are two 750 demon blower carbs and Dart 230 pro heads. Has NOS (never hooked up, never tried). The trans is a built Turbo 350 with a 3500 stall converter. Also has a 15 gallon fuel cell, wheelie bars and fan cooled oil and trans oil coolers under the rear. Dana 60 with 4.10s and detroit locker. Engine and trans have about 700 miles on them.

Wheels and Tires: Front and rear wheels are draglites. Rear tires are Mickey Thompson 33×19.5×15 Sportsman Pros. Front tires – Front Runners

HP? How does 650-750 sound?!?! And that’s without the 250 shot of nitrous! Can you say better than sex?!?!?

So let’s talk about what all of the above would cost. Buying the vehicle before engine and other grades – $30,000 with full square tube chassis, rack and pinion, etc. The engine alone would cost approximately $22,000 (with blower, etc.) NOS $1,000. Turbo 350 trans with stall converter another $1,500. Oil and Trans oil coolers $1,000. So all in – to build it yourself (AND THAT’S IF YOU COULD FIND ONE!) would cost you $55,000+!!!!!”
