Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. “This a 1942 (I think) Willys MB Jeep. It appears to all military except the headlights which appear to CJ 2 A type. Needs restoring. I bought it as a project and realize I have no time. Engine turns over, but I have not run it. It has a set of wheels from an M 151 and tires that hold air.”
Blaine discovered a thread at SCALE MOTORCARS about a guy named Barry who builds scale car wreck dioramas. Included in the different dioramas is a pretty neat scale model of a jeep graveyard. Barry built it based on photographs of an actual location. The setting and condition of the jeeps look a lot like the photo I shared earlier this month from Price of Wales, Papau New Guinea.

UPDATE: I first published this in 2009. I thought it was worth an update, so I’ve added some better photos.
Note: Some of these photos are posted online as being at the Coolidge wreck when they are really from the nearby Million Dollar Point dump. I believe I have the photos under the correct locations, but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
1) Wreck of the SS President Coolidge. Built in 1931 as a luxury liner, the SS President Coolidge was drafted into WWII service and painted gray. While navigating the islands of the Republic of Vanuatu in the Pacific during the war, the Coolidge hit a cluster of recently deployed American mines. The ship listed to the right as more than 5,000 troops were forced to abandon it, leaving behind guns, helmet, jeeps, tanks, rations, medical supplies — all of which sank with the ship in 70-to-240 feet of water about 100 yards from shore.
This jeep is entombed in hold #2 at a depth of 110 feet:

2) Million Dollar Point is another area in the Republic of Vanuatu where jeeps and other equipment was dumped. Located just off the coast of Espirito Santo Island, the area is full of “jeeps, six-wheel drive trucks, bulldozers, semi-trailers, fork lifts, tractors, bound sheets of corrugated iron, unopened boxes of clothing, and cases of Coca-Cola….” dumped by American troops as a way of disposing of the items. I’ve seen a variety of jeep matchbook covers, but I believe this is the first with a military theme. It doesn’t seem to be advertising anything either.

It’s had some use, but I haven’t seen many at this price.
“1980 Mitsubishi J53 4×4 this is Mitsubishi’s version of the willis CJ3b. It has a four cylinder diesel motor,four speed trans,hi/lo transfer case,has skid pans over the oil pan and transmition.it has a 24 volt electric system . this jeep is built to military spec’s, being manufactured in japan not for transport to the U.S. it has right hand steering. this jeep runs and drives good. FOR SALE OR TRADE would trade for 4×4 pickup in good condition.”

All gauges, lights, switches, wiring harness are new and work great. New tires, wheels and tubes. New seat covers from beechwood canvas, new radiator, Battery, electronic ignition. “Bought vehicle in 2007 with 38,000 miles and drove it daily to work (less than 5 miles) everyday, moved to VA in 2010 and parked vehicle, then moved back to VT in 2013 and found vehicle rusty and needing some TLC, I’m moving in 6 months so I have no time to rebuild/restore…great daily driver just needs a good home. Has new points, plugs, condenser, NEEDS fuel line, master cylinder, and tub body work…ran when parked and moved in 2010, runs with battery and fuel but will need brake work, two sets of tires and rims, bikini top…will need to be towed or flatbed to your location…moving in six months and no time to rebuild/restore….strong running daily driver needs TLC”

“Great little trailer to pull behind a jeep cj, wrangler, or other small 4×4. High clearance great for carrying firewood or camping gear.
Works great. New tires, wheel bearings, taillight, etc.
Only surface rust, it has spent its life in the desert and is easily restorable.
1946 Bantam T3-C, this is a civilian trailer (came with tailgate and ball hitch). Still has original id tag and trailer number.”

You are looking at #11579. It has the correct rear hubs, column shift, windshield, and tool indents. No doubt this will be gone by the time I wake up Wednesday morning.

“My cousin Eddie Bachmann got drafted in May 1944, ended up south of the battle of the Buldge around Hagenau, France, in january 1945 as a mortar man. The 42 Division went on to liberate Dachau in April 1945 and by mid summer were occupation troops in Zell am See, Austria. By that time he was a 6 stripe Sergeant and still only 18. Here are some photos of his buddies and Jeeps. He later became a Catholic priest.”
