The Toledo Jeeps of the National Basketball League

• CATEGORIES: Features, Unusual This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Seth shared the “Toledo Jeeps Fire Wagon Gang” graphic.

toledo-jeeps-fire-jeep

I play basketball whenever I can, which isn’t as often as I like these days, because my knees have been outvoting my desire. While I’ve never studied the history of different national basketball leagues , I thought I would have run across the fact that the National Basketball League (NBL) had a team in Toledo named the Toledo Jeeps for a couple years (1946-1948). I was surprised to find there’s even a page of stats for the 1947-1948 year.

Here’s a pair of photos from a program that’s currently on eBay.

Anyone seen another of these signs? Bart is a sign collector from the Netherlands who just acquired this one. Given the DIENST SERVICE phrase, I’m assuming this was only available in Europe, or maybe just the Netherlands?

Steve spotted this one. The photo sold for $129.50 yesterday. It was listed as a photo of the first Ford GPW, but this is actually (I assume) the first Ford GP produced.

“A Vintage 1941 Original Photo announcing the introduction of the U.S. Army’s newest midget car called a “Jeep” ! This small four-wheel drive utility vehicles would become an icon of World War II Jeep. Here is the very 1st one to roll of the production line. Tami is Looking for her Father’s Jeepster

• CATEGORIES: wanted This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Steve forwarded this request for help in locating a Jeepster.

My name is Tami. My dad was Howard F. Post, “Bud” as his friends and all called him. I am very interested in tracking down his ’48 or ’49 Willys-Overland Jeepster. It had a Caddy engine and a Buick automatic transmission(??) as far as we could remember. Attached are the pix of his Jeepster showing the License plate (Calif.: DYH 159) and the modified dash. The “pull lever” was the shifter. My sis always said that no one could steal it because it was too hard to figure out. :))

We were teenagers and in our early 20’s when he sold it. At that time we didn’t wonder or ask why or who. My mom passed away and they sold the house about ‘69-‘72 and that was approx. when he sold the Jeepster and his Willys Jeep. He and 3 buddies painted all of his Jeeps to match. All I remember, everyone in town knew the car well, and it was his baby. My dad raced motorcycles, midgets, and more. My Mom asked him to quit when my sis and I were born.

I joined the Willys Overland Jeepster Club about 3-4 years ago. They published an article about my dad’s Jeepster but no answers. My dad helped start up the Jeep Jamboree in the Rubicon Canyon and I had some pix of the early days–as I recall he went up several weeks ahead of time, and I thought he told us they poured a concrete pad for dancing and to set up camp. I got a bunch of pix together and didn’t go much further with it. I had pix and not a lot of info. The W-O Jeepster club has lots of Jeepster and a lot of them for sale.

My dad was a fabulous guy (of course:), but I know he was a great mechanic. His dad was a tool and die maker, and my dad was his understudy and a great mathematician. He worked for Ford when he was 17 ‘till WW2 and was in the Navy with 3 Ford dealers, and worked for each of them from Washington State. to So. Cal. and then settled in Vallejo for good.

OK, thank you for your consideration and for any info you can help me to find my dad’s Jeepster.

Sincerely, Tami

Jeep Table Top Lighter

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Here’s another army jeep lighter for sale out of Great Britain. This one includes a stand.

“table lighter built into a chrome U.S. army jeep or ‘ willys jeep ‘ – the jeep is fixed to a cut brass plate and stands next to an inert ordnance round sign which has been stamped with the name of the town BASTOGNE, which played a large part in the battle of the bulge, 1944.

The jeep is all cast metal – quite detailed – the lighter is built into the seating area and simply pulls out – the brass plate it stands upon looks like it was a section of a large grandfather clock watch face – the section measures 8 inches across – fixed to the rear of the jeep the round with the brass Bastogne sign.”

1946 CJ-2A Winterset, IA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $6800

(09/03/2014) This looks like a nicely updated flattie.

I am selling my 1946 Jeep Willy CJ2A. It is no longer stock and has a number of upgrades including:

Body is aftermarket replacement parts (steel)
MB/GPW windshield frame
1967 Chevy 327 (275HP from factory)
1968 Muncie M21 four-speed transmission with Hurst Shifter
Dana/Spicer 18 Transfer-case
Dana/Spicer 25 Front Axle
Dana/Spicer 44 Offset Rear Axle
11″ Drum Brakes
Saginaw Steering Upgrade
Upgraded 11″ drum brakes
New Rear Seat and Driveshaft
New 31×9.5×15 AT Tires on 15×8 American Racing Outlaw II Wheels

The 4wd works well and easily goes in and out of 4 wheel and 2 wheel, and high and low. The transmission shifts well and has never popped out of gear on me. The engine is solid and one of the cleanest I’ve seen on the inside after having the intake and oil pan off. I did a casting number search on it to find out the build specs and year and it came from the factory with 275hp. With the addition of the carb, intake, HEI ignition, and headers it is pretty easily past 300hp now. “

• CATEGORIES: MB • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Seller has priced this jeep at an unusually high price. This reflects the fact that the jeep was given to Eisenhower by the people of Scotland. Certainly it makes this jeep an unusual historical vehicle.

THIS WAS BY WAY OF THANKS FROM THE PEOPLE OF SCOTLAND FOR HIS HELP AND SUPPORT DURING WORLD WAR TWO.

I HAVE FULL PROVENANCE WITH THIS JEEP BY WAY OF LETTERS FROM THE GENERAL AND HIS AID AND ALSO FROM THE NATIONAL TRUST OF SCOTLAND WHO BOUGHT THE JEEP FOR HIM . I HAVE A FILE FULL OF PAPERWORK AND PHOTOS TO SUBSTANTIATE THESE FACTS.

1942 MB Slat Grille Denver, CO **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: MB • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $5500.

Runs and drives.

VIN# 113422
USA # 2046114 S

The first 25,808 Willys MBs used a welded steel grille very similar to the Ford GP design, and there were a host of other differences from the later Willys. These early MBs had “Willys” embossed in the back panel. In production, the slat-grilles were given running changes until they finally evolved into the standard stamped-grille MB we know and love. Around 200 slat-grilles are estimated to survive today.

I have restored 5 combat wheels with new NDT tires
-2 gallons of correct olive drab green
-complete NEW seat canvas
-stencil kit with correct USA #
-Runs and Drives great!

This jeep has been in our family and stored inside since the 50’s.

1958 Wagon Pensacola, FL **SOLD**

UPDATE: Was $12,900. **SOLD*.

Looks like a nice truck.

Velocity Restorations is proud to present this awesome 1958 Willy’s Jeep 4×4 wagon. This Willy’s has undergone a 5 yr restoration by the previous owner in Texas. After many dollars and hours were spent the previous owner traded it to us for one of our early model Broncos. We got this Jeep and went through it front to back. The body is exceptionally solid. The L6-226 Super Hurricane straight 6 engine has been rebuilt and runs flawlessly. The rebuilt engine is mated to a strong 3 speed transmission with 4×4, that shifts great. The glass and weather seal are in great condition and work properly. Shocks, brake components, and some suspension components have been replaced. The rear floor has been fitted with mahogany wood. Seats and headliner have been reupholstered and look great. Understand this is a 56 year old vehicle and will not handle like a new Jeep. However, it does start first time everytime, runs great, shifts great, stops straight, and steers good for its age. “
