1950 CJ-3A Deadwood, SD ** Status Unknown**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  Was on eBay. Status Unknown.

(09/29/2012) This solid looking CJ-3A looks like all it needs is a paint job to be a good looking jeep.  The nicely made half top out of boat material is very interesting too.  Whoever made those could probably sell a few — it is hard to find bikini tops for the early CJ’s, especially ones that fit so nicely.

“I bought this Willys from my uncle about 5 years ago. He used it in an apple orchard for many years to pull apple wagons so it went with out license tags for MANY years. It was only driven during apple harvest season so it got few miles usage each year. He and I both always stored it in the garage and never drove it in the winter. He had the engine overhauled about 9 years ago when he forgot to put oil in it during an oil change. When I got it the tranny and transfer case growled terrible do to many years with bad boots on the shift levers letting in water and dirt. I installed rebuilts about 5 yrs ago and it now runs very quietly. It is used as a summer putt around vehicle here in Deadwood SD so has been seen by MANY in this area. It purrs around nicely at speeds up to 50 mi/hr with out the typical WILLY WOBBLE. Driven mostly around mountainous terrain with out heat problems. (I had the radiator boiled out before I put it on the road 5 yrs ago). Lights and brakes work good. New windshield and windshield hinge gasket  2 yrs ago. New plastic under seat gas tank (same design as original). New gas sending unit which does not register correctly–I think it might be for a 12 volt. Other gages work fine. New speedo cable but speedo JUMPS when connected (Maybe the wrong drive gear was put in during rebuild). Emergency cable is missing but other parts including handle are included. Has warn lock outs in the front diff. It shows very little rust. The frame and floor are in good condition. The SURRY top(2 yrs old-made of boat cloth) and frame comes off very easily so windshield can be folded down.  This is a very nice little Willys which I am selling only because have another.”

Juan’s Jeep Collection and Story

• CATEGORIES: Features, International, Reader Stories • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Juan wrote to me the other day. He wanted to share his life long passion with jeeps that started when he was a young boy in Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico. Juan doesn’t speak English and my Spanish isn’t much better, so I have done my best to translate his email (and any mistakes are my fault).  Thanks for sharing Juan!

DAVE good afternoon.

I am a 60 year old retired Veterinarian. My Father was born and lived in Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico, land of the best coffee. My father always used Willys jeeps or trucks to access our ranch because they were the only vehicles that could make it. When I was eighteen months of age he gave me Kings Pedal Jeep as a gift and I treasured it.

In 1969 I left my country and moved to the port of Veracruz to study veterinary and animal science. I went to work at the state of Oaxaca. Each week or two back I returned home to help my father in his old age. When I retired, I return to Coatepec to launch a small veterinary pharmacy. My parents had both passed away by that time. After returning home, I found that many friends asked about my father and whether he had any jeep parts for sale. After enough requests, I got the idea to buy some jeeps and rebuild them or part them out.

In 2007 one of my children taught me to use the computer and showed me lots of different willys sites. After seeing the Willys clubs in Colombia, I got the idea to form a Coatepec Willys clubs with some friends. We changed the name to Jeeperos Coatepec, because we have many friends that had 4×4 vehicles other than Willys. We hung out every month, attended cultural events, sports exhibitions, and were invited to participate in events on the beaches of Veracruz chachalacas, where every year all the republic clubs totaling more than 200 jeeps gathered. We have participated in movies of Che Guevara Arnold, in a French movie, in some commercials, and more.

Unfortunately, one of my children died eight months ago. This depressed me to the point where I stopped wheeling and being active in the group. However, I have slowly been overcoming this tragedy with help from my friends. And, thanks to websites like yours, I feel more motivated to keep up with my jeeps. We hope some day you can make it down here [editor’s note . . . so do I!]. If you do, you can enjoy a jeep ride through the plantation, canals and farms of these places .

In the first three photos below show the small collection I have. A 1947 CJ-2A, 1953 CJ-3B, a CJ-5, a CJ-7 and more.

Many Thanks.

Juan Lopez Badillo

=============================

From these first three pictures you can see that Juan has a nice variety of complete and incomplete jeeps.

This has the potential for a Colorado Tour Rig!

1945 VEC CJ-2A Minneapolis, MN $6000

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This looks like a good restoration project.

“This is a super early 1945 cj2A first year of the civilian jeeps. This is serial # 10207 or the 207th civilian jeep ever made. There are only a few known with an earlier number. Vehicle is numbers matching engine, frame and data tags. Was switched to a cain shifter but I have the correct side shifter transmission and column shift steering column. I bought it a few years ago drove it off the transport and have stored it since. I am not able to find the time to restore this as it should be.

The good:
It is solid. Numbers correct and very early. Only the first couple of hundred had no data tag on the firewall and an extra tab on the rear soft top bow storage bracket. The engine was gone through right before I bought it and it does not need to be rebuild it is in good condition. I have turned it over every few months the past couple years but have not started it. It ran perfect when taken off the trailer.

The bad:
The only rust I can see is in the driver side step. It clearly needs to be restored but nearly everything is there and correct. The only things I know it to need are the horn, and solid wheels. I may have the seat. Has no brakes they would need parts.

I do have extra parts that are not included in the price but I can help source anything if you need the help.

Vehicle is sold as is. It is a fair price for a very early project. It is a really nice start since so much is there and correct and the body is solid. Rust and needing rare parts cost a lot of money!

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $450.

There’s value here.

“A 170. The cab is in fairly good condition rust wise except for around the windshield where there is rust on the sides, top and starting across the bottom from the posts. The floor and lower cab seem to be fairly solid. The bed is not stock and just sitting on the frame and goes with the truck if desired. The engine is loose, but had not run in my time with the truck about 5 years. There is no transmission or drive shafts. There is a transfer case, however. This truck is good for parts or the start of a project.”

“A later model 150. It has the wider track and the cast iron weight in the rear of the frame. The cab has the usual rust spots, the floor, lower rear corners and above the windshield. The bed is in reasonable condition, but no tail gate. The engine is loose and ran a few years ago. I never drove the truck so I do not know the condition of the transmission (three speed) and transfer case. The rear end is a limited slip. Included is a spare front axle from a CJ Jeep. It is a project, but it is all there.”

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Was $4500. Status Unknown

Lots of good details in the description.

“This is 1946 Willys CJ2A Jeep with a WWII Willys MB motor, Serail # MB393830, casting 638632W2A A 3-80. The jeep is running and has a clear Massachusetts title. I bought this jeep because it has a WWII Willys MB motor in it. I have WWII Jeeps and intended to use it as a spare (it runs perfect, no smoke and good oil pressure). My plan was to pull the WWII motor, rebuild one of the motors I had from CJ2A’s, install it and then sell the jeep. Time marches on and I eventually found another motor that I could use as a spare. The CJ2A comes with 2 motors,, Serial # CJ2A33837 (which is a 1946; the previous owner of this motor was doing a valve job and that’s how I got it))and Serial # U48485; both turn freely and are early production (still have the oval pad); extra radiator; spare tire and mount; column shift transmission (see photo of inside, it looks really good and turns smoothly) and transfer case (this was entire drivetrain was married to the CJ2A 33837 motor); early soft top and some bows (never tried it on); extra parts; very original (i.e. right windshield, seats); no bondo, but has had sheet metal replaced (I think the side steps look cool); it has a WO 636 12 patent carb and Oakes air cleaner. I redid the brakes last year and it has a new exhaust. The seats will need to be reupholstered, but I believe that they are original, backs and seats have springs. It has your typical drips but runs and shifts fine… it’s 66 years old. It has 2 of the three original data plates on the dash (like that when I bought it). It has a T-90 transmission, but I’m guessing it origianlly had a column shifter. Currently, it is setup for 12v. It is titled as a 1947 CJ2A, that was how I got it.

A WWII Jeep guy would be interested because of the original good running motor and that they are hard to find. You could pull it, put in a rebuilt CJ2A motor the resell the jeep (you get money back). Or a CJ2A guy pulls the motor, sells it and rebuilds and installs the CJ2A motor (you get money back). I would guess the motor is worth at least $1500 (could be more, lots of WWII jeeps have CJ2A motors in them and guy want an original). Both CJ motors look fine, can’t see any cracks in the block. There are extra parts (motor, drivetrain, etc) to sell if you don’t want them.I don’t have the time or desire to do this now, so that’s my reason for selling it. I need to focus on my WWII jeeps”

1946 CJ-2A Petaluma, CA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $6000

Some dents and dings on the passenger side and has some floor rust.

“This is a mechanically beautiful truck hiding inside a well patinated body. I’ve been driving it all over Petaluma this year, enough that it’s become well known and loved. I’d keep it forever, but our first baby will be here next month, and I have five cars that can’t hold a baby seat. D’oh!

Here’s a list of recent work:
– new radiator, thermostat, hoses, belts
– new cap, rotor, points, condenser
– new spark plug wires, plugs, coil, battery, battery cables
– rebuilt carb
– oil change, filter
– new fuel tank, all new lines & hoses, new fuel pump and fuel filter
– new or rebuilt all wheel cylinders and master, new lines and soft hoses
– axle seals (inner and outer, front and rear) replaced and packed wheel bearings, new swivel seals
– greased all chassis lube points
– rebuilt original Dualmatic locking hubs
– new rear main seal, timing cover seal, crankshaft seal, oil pan gasket, rocker cover gasket
– new muffler and rear portion of exhaust
– fresh tune-up including valve adjustment
– new NDT tires and tubes
– new full top bow set and Sunbrella canvas half cab
– 48″ farm jack mounted to front bumper

More good things:
– original chaff guard included (hard to find)
– starts easily, runs very well, shifts, steers, brakes etc. just as it should
– tow bar included for easier transport
– spare engine with all ancillaries comes with it; very handy for reference and emergency spares
– original black CA plates with current registration

Current needs:
– speedometer broke and was taken out to send to rebuilder; can rebuild or buy new one from Walck’s for $75 (maybe less on ebay)
– fuel tank sender needs replacement; registers ok between 1/4 and empty so at least you know when you need gas
– obviously needs body and paint if you want to win a show. Most people (including me) seem to get a bigger kick out of the patina that only 66 years of existence can produce
– rust through on passenger floor and bottom of tool box, pitted driver’s floor; otherwise just surface rust
– new owner may want new front seat canvas ($110 from New Life Canvas, screws in place)
– windshield vent levers are not installed (they are included with the truck)”

This runs, but the closeup pics show this is rougher than it first appears.

“This 1951Willis is a running project. Just installed 4 new plugs yesterday-could still useplugs wires, dist. cap but parts house did not have in stock. They also did nothave a brake master cylinder and they were showing 2 different ones and bothwould have to be special ordered-so I am going to sell it like it is. We did aYouTube video of it and adjusted the clutch yesterday. Gas tank was removed-cleanedand sealed and soldered up some leaks. It also has an electric fuel pump.Starter just rebuilt and electrical system has been changed to 12 volt. Originallyit had a pedal on the floor to engage the starter but it’s gone and now has arod hooked to it to engage and disengage

I got this from a friend of mines wife after he passed away earlier this year. They usedit on their hunting land-but has been sitting for a few years and he owned itfor many years. It is not a rust bucketbut it does have some on the step braces. See pictures. Floors are very solid.I bought this with intention of using it as my 4 wheeler but have since gottenme one. I paid her $1,500 cash-and have spent apx $500 in used tires and rims, usedseats, fuel pump, paint, gas tank repairs, plugs and other assorted odd andends. My reserve is 1,800 and a buy me price of $2,200 to recover my money andsome of my time.

Alabama doesnot have title on anything of this age but I do have an open bill of sale and atag receipt where it was last registered in 2004.

He hadpainted it yellow and we repainted it with spray rustolium yellow paint andblack rustolium. The seats are just sitting in there and will need somemodification before it safely be used, (Do not know what happened to originalseats). I also have other seats you could use if you don’t like these. The right rear shock mount where is was welded to the axal is going to need rewelded.

Uncertian of the milage on this as it’s excempt when registerng here.

The 4 wheeldrive system works and hubs lock in and out easy. The windshield is flat glassand has a crack in it-I folded it down and installed a piece of foam rubberwhere it lies on the hood. Has a tow hitch on it and will hook up to a 2” ball.Tires are pretty good so you should be able to tow it to your place-or if youneed me to deliver I will do for $1.00 per mile but do not want to go over 200miles. I will be going to N/East Tennessee in about 2 weeks and have a way to deliver.

Carved Pumpkin Jeeps

• CATEGORIES: Artists/Drawings, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

For those who haven’t carved your pumpkins yet, I found a few ideas below.  We (and by we I mean Ann did all the work) grew our own pumpkins this year, so if we make time for carving them we will try something with a jeep flair.

Kaiser Willys is having a Jeep Pumpkin Carving contest with a $25 gift certificate as the prize.  Go to their facebook page to learn more.  The pic below is from the Kaiser Willys Facebook page.

Here’s another carved pumpkin for those that can’t identify what the shapes represent:

Here is a different take on a jeep pumpkin that I found here.

Here is a stencil you can use to carve your own pumpkin.  Well, it’s a small size version of the stencil. The original stencil seems to be gone.  If you click here, you can use a version of this pic that I have blown up (maybe it will work?).

And then there is this painting of a jeep amongst pumpkins by Daphne Wynne Nixon.

Here are a few other links to carvings:
