My Build — More Engine fun …

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit, News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE June 21:   My second trip for bearings to the NAPA store was a failure.  They shipped me bearings that were wrong AGAIN!  I got my money back and went online to find bearings.  That was a failure as well as I couldn't get anything to ship sooner than July 7.  Desperate to do the build while the kids are here, I turned to autozone.  Amazingly, not only did they have the bearings in the store and in stock, but they were only $26 (for the same Clevite77 bearings NAPA was charging me $42).  Even better, I had earned $10 on my Autozone store card and  so the final cost for the bearings was only $17. —–

June 20th .. I was all ready to assemble the engine when I discovered the Main bearings didn't fit correctly.  After examining them more carefully, I discovered they didn't work at all.  The 'tang' was in the wrong location as was the oil hole.

This morning, I took the bearings back to the NAPA store.  After a discovery process of about 20 minutes we finally concluded I got the correct bearing box, but the box had tractor bearings rather than buick v-6 bearings.  So, my new bearings should be here tomorrow morning.  Because of this, the engine build has been delayed until monday (when the kids are back).

1955 CJ-5 Seattle $14,000

• CATEGORIES: CJ5 This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Are you kidding me?  $14,000 for a cj5 that needs suspension work?  Add to that it's a pink jeep with "Angel's Toy" on the back and you're looking at a jeep that has a pretty small buyer demographic.

"1955 Willys CJ5 Jeep. It has a 327 corvette motor, 4 speed tranny twin stick transfer case, has tilt wheel, spring over sitting on 42in super swampers. It was painted aproximately 10 years ago,but has been garaged until two months ago, it's never seen mud, but would be a fun toy to have. It has a stainless steel custom dash."

1963 DJ-3A Surrey — Saint Petersburg, Florida eBay

• CATEGORIES: DJ-3A • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

On first glance this looks almost brand new.  But, on a closer look I realized someone couldn’t resist modifying it by changing the windshield.  At first, I thought the windshield was raised and attached to an added bracket; however, after looking at more pictures,  I’d say someone tried to make a CJ-3B windshield fit on it. On such a rare and good looking jeep, I can only wonder why??

“This ultra rare 5000-mile documented original 1963 Willys spent the majority of it`s life on a golf course in Florida. It is believed to be one of the few Surrey Gala models. At some point in it’s life it has had a color change and top upgrade. For the last 15 years it has been part of a private collection. It has never been offered for sale before. It is in excellent mechanical condition and presents beautifully.”

Happy Father’s Day

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I hope all the fathers enjoyed a happy father's day!

I took the day off yesterday from ewillys, enjoying an 8 hour drive with my children from Seattle back to Boise.  My own father was in the hospital for a couple days after what appeared to be small stroke, though the doctors could not find anything.  By yesterday he was back to his normal self and back home from the hospital.  I teased him that if he thought we were to noisy, he could have asked us to quiet down rather than checking himself into the hospital.

On Saturday I took my kids to the museum of flight in downtown Seattle.  I wanted to use the experience as a springboard for determining an approach for a jeep museum.  While the museum of flight is ostensibly about planes, it is really about people's stories (in the beginning, in war, in space, etc) and our experience as a people and the impact of planes in that experience. Their approach to planes mirrors my desire for a similar approach to telling the stories of the people who owned, used, and named their jeeps.

The museum of flight also offers bi-plane flights and other 'old time' experiences, which is similar to what I wanted to capture as well with people being able to drive an early jeep (such as an early bantam built to spec).  A number of people have said I couldn't get the insurance I would need to offer these types of rides, but if their's insurance for giving bi-plane rides than their must be insurance for a jeep ride.

1945 MB Palermo, Ca $18000

• CATEGORIES: MB This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The seller of this jeep wants $18000, though the jeep is not completed yet.  Whether you agree with the price, you'll probably enjoy looking through the 40+pics of the jeep and its various parts.

"This is a 1945 MB, WWII military jeep, that has been meticulously restored over the last 15 years. It is 85-90% finished, with boxes and boxes of parts, and everything needed to complete it. The parts used have been predominately NOS (New-Old-Stock: vintage parts still in the boxes), as when the project was begun there was still a supply of original vintage parts, and if a person was patient and willing to pay – could seek them out. This jeep is solid, and great care was even used to preserve all of the original spot welds, which as this is a military vehicle built for combat – it has plenty, and wears them proudly!"

This looks to be a nice baby blue CJ-2A.  Oddly, the lower part of the top slopes downward as it runs from the driver's door to the back of the jeep.  Maybe the top connectors slope down on the body, but that would be odd I would think.

Fiberglass Flatfender taken apart, Chicago eBay

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A, CJ-3A • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  The seller has reposted this on eBay with more pics.

This looks to be the same fiberglass body as my first jeep.  The seller is correct; this body is light — I used to move the body myself by crouching underneath it and picking it up on my back (my current body is somewhat heavier).  However, I disagree with the seller; this body makes a fine jeeping body.  But, if used for jeeping, tie a cage to the frame and use the cage to help support the body.

“1949 Willys CJ 2 A/B, I have one title with no vin plate, Two Straight solid frames, Light weight single wall fiberglass body tub (not my recommendation for serious off road use, good for a sand buggy), Overhead valve inline 4 cylinder engine (from a 3B or early CJ-5), 2 T 90 transmissions with transfer cases, 2 sets of stock willys axles, one of which has new brake shoes and hardware”

Tom, from Forks, Washington, has a new CJ-5 project he's purchased.  He had a question about the location of the vin plate on the body.  He thought it should be on the passenger side firewall, but that's where the battery holder is located.  Anyone know where the vin plate is on a 50s CJ-5?

Tom also has his two flatties for sale.  You can learn more about then here.

"This is a 1948 CJ-2A willys, Chevy 350 V8, Turbo 400 transmission Rebuilt less than 500 miles ago, Dana 18 Transfercase Rebuilt less than 500 miles ago. This is a fun little jeep. Have taken it many places Pismo Gorman ect. Does not have an overdrive top speed around 50mph. But will go up, around, through and down almost any hill you have the guts to try. Update:  Price dropped to $2500

The add says '45 Willys, but the body looks to be 46 or greater, so I'm calling it a 1946 CJ-2A.  It appears driver's side step isn't there, so likely some rust underneath.  Also, the ad says roll bar, but it looks to be a full cage.  Woodland is north of Portland.

1947 CJ-2A Minnesota Status?

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Was listed at $5700

This is a nicely modified CJ-2A called “Quick Change”.  The builder built a similar drive train to what I’m doing, except for using a 289 where I’m using a buick 3.8.  We even have the same rims.

“This is a jeep I picked up a while back. It has been trail riding since 1981 and has the little trail ride plates on the dash. It is a modded steel body with very little rust by some trail scars. Specs are:  1947CJ2a, Chevy 283 V8 (I was told this was a stroker…no way to prove it without dissasembly), Torker intake, Tall chevy aluminum valve covers, Edelbrock carb with the offroad needles and seats (works awesome off road)…..”

• CATEGORIES: Builds, Features, M-38 This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I don’t know whether Craig is finished with his jeep or not, but he certainly had some terrible rot to deal with.  I’ve linked to the ‘Golden Triangle Jeep Club’s’ bulletin board for this Build story.  Below is the pic of Craig’s M-38 body:

you could draw a line down the middle of the body and replace all of the driver’s side floor to be safe. i’m gonna avoid catalog bought floor panels and construct my own from 16 gauge sheetmetal along with new crossmembers. i got a pair of Wagoneer Dana 44s last weekend and am working on the suspension, which will be stock waggy leafs in the front and YJ leaves out back. I picked up a Chevy 4.3 V6 to use and can’t decide on which tranny to go with, but i’m thinking SM465 b/c Novak offers a really short adapter to the Dana 18 case….”
