I have fallen into the classic trap of rebuilding old iron – I got deep into a project before finally realizing that I am not enjoying it. What I have is 95% of the way to being a totally awesome retro offroader – not the lifted V8 junk that most people do, but rather something that keeps the classic style of the Willys Jeep and improves its performance in sensible ways.

Jeep Jockeys 4×4 Races – 1977 Souvenir Program

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features, Racing • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Here’s an official Jeep Jockeys souvenir program I found on ebay a couple years ago. I finally scanned it yesterday. Many of the photos didn’t print well, but it’s still an interesting booklet, especially for those like me that recognize some of the racers names. I was disappointed by all the ads, but I included them in the scans.

A little background information: the Yakima Jeep Jockeys of Yakima, Washington, formed a club in 1963. In 1965 they incorporated and joined the Pacific Northwest Four Wheel Drive Association. Beginning in 1971, the club held a series of Jeep Jockeys 4×4 Championship Races. They held them at leaf through 1977, but I do not know how much longer they were held after that year.

Exploration Northwest featured the 1977 race in one of their 1977 episodes. I was given permission to share two video clips from their episodes here.

You might remember Ron Day’s photos from a 1977 Yakima Race. It seems to be the same race that was featured in the souvenir program below.

I’m helping my grandpa sell his Vintage Army Jeep. It’s in superb condition for its age, still runs like a champ, and 4×4 works great! 1951 M38 Willys US Army Jeep. It has low miles on the original engine, because it was used by a Commanding General, HQ1. It has a 2.2L four cylinder engine, manual locking hubs, 3 speed manual transmission, and a 2 speed transfer case. The vehicle only has 59,xxx original miles on it! 45,473 M38’s were built from 1950-1952, who knows how many are still drivable. Serious inquires only. This hasn’t been a beater hunting rig. It has been well taken care of. It’s a Classic! If you want to own and drive away with a piece of American History give me a call.”

The Shed’s Willys Wagon BBQ

• CATEGORIES: Features, Unusual, Willys Wagons • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This one-of-a-kind smoker and BBQ was built from a 1954 Willys Wagon. It was created as a portable bbq kitchen for a restaurant in Mississippi called the The Shed (actually, two restaurants now) founded by the Orrison family. They chose to use a Willys because, “it’s like the oft repeated mantra of cooking great barbecue: You have to drive it ‘low and slow.'”

Medium.com has a long story about The Shed and their experience at a BBQ competition.

Here are a few photos from medium.com and from USA Today:

UPDATE: Was listed at $800. Status Unknown.

Eric spotted this rare Austin Gipsy for sale. This was built after the Champ.

“Great car. These were made to compete with the Land Rover and were used by the British military all over the world. This beauty has some rust issues in the rocker area. The rest of the car is pretty good. The only major dent is from an old elephant hit years ago. The motor is complete and turns by hand. The carb needs to be rebuilt – I have the kit. I also have some points, etc, and a service book. No gas tank or exhaust system. It has sat for many years. One of my plans was to place the body on a Jeep chassis. The tires hold air!!! Look at the pictures. I am serious about selling and am only looking to get $800.00”

1951 CJ-3A Basalt, CO **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was $2200.

This is a solid running and driving old Jeep. Body is in good shape. There is some rust repair underneath and the usual dents and dings.(not a show car) Newer F-head engine runs like a champ and no leaks. The seals leak on the tranny and transfer case. This does not effect the drivability, I just found it easier to refill every couple months as to a repair!(I’ve found most Jeeps of this era like to “mark their territory”) Interior has newer seats w/ seatbelts.(could use some seat covers) Has been converted to 12v. I also have the frame and doors for the soft top but NO soft top skin. I have more pictures available and please call with ANY questions. I’ve owned this rig for about a year and am only parting with it because I recently acquired a 1944 MB! Willing to trade for a mid-life crisis! I’m looking for an old muscle car 60’s or 70’s. An ’82-90 Camaro could work too.(no v6’s) Maybe a pop up camper in REAL good shape(no junk) or anything cool and automotive related NO boats I’m not looking to re-assemble a project or pick up a basket case. Call with any offers I can trade up or down with cash or other items(air tools, bang sticks, guy stuff) Mine runs and drives, yours should too! I am willing to do some work and have no delusions of grandeur. Just want to make fair trade.”

Clyde is selling his truck. It includes a 1959 parts truck if you pay the full price.

Very rare 1950 flat nose Willys Pickup. My wife calls it “The Bootlegger”. This body style was only made for 3 years. The engine is a running 1952 Studebaker Champion 170 inline 6. Front differential is a Dana 25 and Dana 53 in rear. The tags show the gear ratio as 4:88. Three speed manual transmission with twin stick transfer case. UPDATE: Was $5000

“this jeep is a project, it is almost finished. my son and i bought it, put some time and money in it and basicallly lost interest. between us we have 5 other vehicles so this one is just one too many, we are bored with it, and i have some work i would like to do in the garage on the other jeep. the price is negotiable of course. all that is left to make it a driver is a mounted battery, gas tank, gauges, and the drivetrain controls. the title is clear, reg is current, and its on non op. here is how it sits:

axles are original, dana 25 and 41
t-case is original, dana 18
tranny is an sm465 fitted with an advance adapter
two inch body lift
tires have full tread they are 32 inch bfg all terrains.
front hubs are warn
engine is an odd fire buick v6
body is fiberglass, windshield is original metal frame, glass has a crack in it.
steering column is a gm unit.
optima redtop battery
manual brakes and steering

the engine runs like a champ. all new ignition components, rebuilt carb, and new fuel pump. the drivers side exhaust needs to be ran. all the lights work, alternator is good, it has a painless wire kit installed. it is ready for gauges. ignition is push button start. when finished it would easily be worth double my asking price. the body and paint alone would cost 4k.”

<– Day 12 – Mar. 31st: Stagecoaches and a Glass Desert | OVERVIEW | Day 14 Apr. 2nd: It is Cold, Windy and Raining . . . This is the Mohave Desert? –>

2014-03-31-seligman-sundries1

A piece of eWillys is now a part of Route 66 history at Seligman Sundries

We began our day by replenishing our food supplies. Unlike our trip to the East Coast last summer (we each gained ten pounds), we’ve been more careful about what we eat. This has meant many light dinners of good cheese, smoked meats and some crackers. Since Ann shouldn’t eat cows milk (beef protein sensitive since a baby), we’ve been shopping for goat and sheep cheese. Since AJs Fine Foods, Trader Joes, and Whole Foods are good sources of that cheese (and close together in Scottsdale), we decided we’d better stock up so we’d have dinner for the next few days.

2014-04-01-phoneix-kingman-map

Today we drove from Phoenix to Kingman.

After our shopping was done, we drove toward Mayer, AZ, where I’d learned about a place called Arcosanti. Below is an example photo of the place and more images here. I thought it warranted a closer look.

arcosanti-building

I wanted to drop by Arcosonti, but we accidentally passed it.

For some reason, I thought this unusual development was outside Mayer, Arizona. It turns out it is near the intersection of I-17 and Hwy 69, which we’d already passed. So, we ended up touring Mayer for a short time before resuming our trek north to Route 66.

But, it wasn’t all for naught, as we did find this collection of odd vehicles just before Mayer. There’s a couple jeeps among some vintage trucks.
