Half Year Gone Already!

• CATEGORIES: News

That was a quick first half of 2022! It seems like it was just January…. Just this update today, as I will be busy installing some final trim on the guest house so the trim can be painted (see the bottom pics).

Our highlight from the Fourth was a short visit by Cowboy and Donna on their way from Illinois to the ocean. Cowboy accompanied Russ on our 2017 trip to Alaska and we’ve remained good friends since (as all the trip participants have). Somehow, I got no pics of the four of us!

However, to help them spot our place, I drove Patterson to the front of the property: It made for a couple good pics.
2022-07-04-fourth-patterson1 2022-07-04-fourth-patterson2

Our lowlight from the Fourth was watching the dry hills a few miles to the south of us catch fire from idiots shooting illegal fireworks over the dry Horse Heaven Hills. I’d estimate the fire line was roughly 2 miles long. This morning, this section of the hills is black; thankfully, the fire(s) are extinguished.

2022-07-04-hills-fire

On another note, I was surprised on the 3rd to see this CJ-3B sitting in our neighbor’s field across the road. This is the first time I’ve seen the 3B at their place. They were shooting at something, presumably marmots. I’ll find out more about the jeep when I next see them:

cj3b-neighbor

Finally, Ann decided it was time to paint the guest house, so I’ve been enlisted to finish up the exterior window trim (for some reason this was never completed). Here’s a before look at the rather bland colors:

2021-09-little-house-outside-lores

Here, the red color is mostly completed, giving it much more of a “barn” feel. The dark blue will be replaced with white.

1951 CJ-3A Paradise Valley, AZ $4450

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A

Kevin’s selling his CJ-3A that he got from his father. It has an f-head that may be frozen, but the body is supposed to be in excellent shape. You can contact him at 602 809 6666 or via email at karo @ kds.phxcoxmail.com (remove the spaces around the “@”).

1951-CJ3A-az-1 1951-CJ3A-az-2 1951-CJ3A-az-3 1951-CJ3A-az-4 1951-CJ3A-az-5

“1951 Willys CJ-3A. I am the fourth owner. My Dad owned it for nearly 40 years. It has never been anywhere but Arizona. VIN 451-GB1 43997 was purchased by AiResearch Manufacturing Company in June, 1951 and used to tow a heavy welding generator around the plant. It was used by AiResearch until 1975 when my father, an AiResearch employee bought it from his company. He owned it until his death in 2015.

My brother and I sold the Jeep to a fellow AiResearch employee, but I bought it back from him in March of this year and intended to honor my Dad by restoring it, keeping it in the family, and passing it down to my son. There’s no rust on the Jeep except a little minor surface rust in the bed area.

After rebuilding and installing the starter, I discovered that the F-head engine is frozen up. I was intent on putting the correct engine, a rebuilt L-head in it. I’m told that a number of parts on the F-head are interchangeable with and could be installed on a good or rebuilt L-head. I don’t know if the rebuilt F-head starter interchanges with an L-head.

Stock 6-volt electrical. 40,010 miles on the odometer, which could be has likely turned once. It wasn’t driven hard by my Dad, who took good care of it. The man I bought it from told me he had driven it about 35 miles in almost 7 years, running his grandchildren around on his large ranch property. It’s essentially complete and original, except for the F-head engine.

Original frame and tub, original mechanicals. It hasn’t been butchered the way some Jeeps rare. The body is in surprisingly good condition. Everyone who has seen it has told me that the body is in very good shape, especially compared to what most restorers start with. I believe the transmission, transfer case, clutch, axles, brakes, radiator, fuel tank and original Warn hubs are in decent shape, although I remember my Dad telling me at least eighteen years ago that he thought there might be “something going on” with one of the gears in the transmission. I believe the suspension, springs and shocks are in good shape. Recent lubrication of entire chassis. Steering box will have to rebuilt or replaced.

AiResearch discarded the rear bumper assembly, welded a “tail” on the Jeep and attached a pintle hook. I bought a stock bumper plus hardware and it’s ready to be installed when the tail is removed. Battery purchased last September is strong and I’ve been keeping it charged. Needs new tailgate and new hood once the right engine is installed. Number of holes to be filled and body and paint work needed. AiResearch put the wrong taillights on the Jeep. It was originally a dark green color, and at one time was a pale yellow.

I have concluded that unfortunately I don’t have the ability to take it from where it is now to where it should be and must let it go to someone who can restore it properly. I want it to go to someone who will restore it to original condition and treasure it, as my family and I would have done. It’s worth that. Clean AZ title. $4,450 or will take best offer.”

Updates on the Racer

• CATEGORIES: Bantam-FordGP-WillysMA-EarlyJPs

I hope everyone enjoys their Fourth of July! We are spending it at home as we work on various projects. I’ve mostly been focusing on jeeps, while Ann has taken on painting the guest house a barn-red color.

I spent some time a couple days ago work on the racer’s frame (removing and grinding). Along the way I discovered a few interesting tidbits.

Here’s where I started, with the gas tank, battery, and cowl in place. Because I want to gain a few more inches for the cockpit, I want to move the gas tank and battery back farther, which means redoing the mounts for both.

Before removal:

2022-06-30-frame-work-racer02

After .. you can more easily see the custom crossmember that was added when the frame was widened. Not the prettiest installation work.

2022-06-30-frame-work-racer01

While looking at the rear of the frame, I noticed that the frame seems to widened further in back. It turns out the rear of the frame rails is about 1.5″ wider than the mid section and front section of the frame. I don’t believe that was intentional. Here are a couple pics looking down both frames rails. It’s easy to see the frame’s bows. However, I don’t want to redo the entire frame at this point; I’m more interested in functionality.

2022-06-30-frame-work-racer0 2022-06-30-frame-work-racer1

It’s hard not to want to toss the frame and do a full rebuild, but I don’t want to make that investment of time and money until I’m sure I still enjoy racing. It just has to be safe, comfy, and dependable. Looks can come later.

“This 1971 Jeepster Commando SCI and the 1971 Jeepster Hurst Edition were built for only a couple of months or so making them the rarest Jeeps ever built. Only around 300 of each were ever built and around 125 Hurst Editions are known to exist and less SC1’s are known to survive making it the rarest Jeep known.

I bought it pretty much as is a few years ago adding the wheels and tires. Everything mechanical was rebuilt like the V6 engine and upgraded in horsepower with 4bbl carb, turbo 400 tranny both rear end and front end. Power Steering and Power brakes were added and an aftermarket stereo replaces the original radio and unfortunately small refinements were made to the dash to get an earlier edition radio to fit.

“1964 Jeep CJ3b, the last year for the flat fender jeep. Runs and drives, but needs a little TLC. Frame off restoration done by Gateway Classic cars in late 2014. Dauntless V6 with a 3 speed manual trans. 4×4. My grandparents purchased it at auction and took delivery in December of 2014. It sat outside for a couple of years, and as a result, the top has mold on the inside. No rips or tears, but I have had the top off ever since I bought it from my grandparents because it feels bigger and cleaner without it.

Been inside my garage since I bought it. Needs a little carb work, nothing major. Runs and drives, but it does need to warm up quite a bit to get it to idle well. New tires January 2021. (Brand new spare in back.) New battery January 2021. New Brakes February 2021. New Radiator February 2021. And a few more repairs since then. Paint is in great shape, but does have a few blemishes. Incredibly clean, rust free. OBO or trade. Let’s make a deal.”

Give the data plate serial number of 29621, I thought this might be a VEC CJ-2A chassis with an M-38 body. However, note the grille and front crossmember seem set up for a grille mounted radiator, rather than a front member mounted radiator. Golden Spike Jeep Rallys in Utah

In 1969, a local group in northern Utah launched the Golden Spike Jeep Rally, an event that occurred in conjunction with the Ogden Pioneer Days in Late July. I know for sure the event took place in 1969 and 1970, but don’t know how long it lasted.

Events included hill climbs at Rainbow Gardens and an Obstacle Race at Mount Ogden Park, both Saturday and Sunday.

Fuel Pump Fun

• CATEGORIES: News

My new fuel pump arrived for Patterson, so I tossed the old one (which was a glass bowled hand-me-down from Chris McKay back in 2017) and installed the new one. Of course, the new one didn’t work. So, I did the usual over a period of a few days:

I checked the lines, I recheck the lines. I rechecked the rechecked lines.
I checked the clamps on the line. I installed different clamps.
I checked the cam for a groove or signs of it being worn (none that I could feel),
I reinstalled the electric pump to double check the lines and to check there was enough gas (there was and it worked).
I pulled the new pump and hand pumped it with some gas in a container (to prime it). It pumped by hand fine. I reinstalled the new pump, but no luck.

So, I pulled the old pump out of the trash (which had worked fine until late last year), reattached the fittings, and hand pumped some gas out of a small container (that worked).

With the old pump primed, I reattached it. The pump is now working.

That was a lot of work for little progress!!
