1959 DJ-3A Surrey St. Petersburg, FL **Status Unknown**

• CATEGORIES: DJ-3A • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Status Unknown. Was $24,500.

This refurbished surrey doesn’t have all the original surrey-like trimmings, but it does have several Surrey indicators, such as the dry type air filter and the footman loops on the fenders.

“1959 Willy’s DJ3A Surrey/Gala, VIN# – 5633716515, Mileage – 14,680. My guess is that this is the lowest mileage Surrey/Gala in existence. The original owner ordered this Willy’s new directly from the factory. After a long ownership, he passed away and his widow sold the Surrey to her dear friend. It appears that this sale occurred in 1997.

1959-dj3a-surrey-stpetersburg-fl13

Soon after, The 2nd owner had a cosmetic restoration done to the vehicle including new blue paint and what I believe was an aftermarket seat and top kit sold back then by JC Witney. I still have this top. I first saw this auto online and became very interested after confirming that it was a Surrey/Gala. I purchased it sight unseen, had it shipped to me, and started on its mechanical restoration. I have now owned it for almost 4 years, driving her a couple times a week and,of course, keeping it garaged.

This is a DJ-3A body on a (most likely) CJ-2A chassis. Given the PTO winch, there sure looks like some value here.

1955 Photo of Mail Jeep Dispatcher

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, DJ-3A, Features, Old Images This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

According to the CJ-3B Page, the Post Office experimented with several different types of jeeps for mail delivery. However, finding photos or history of these jeeps has proven difficult. Last week I acquired this awesome photo stamped December 18, 1955, showing a DJ-3A with a hardtop, no tailgate, and no sides to make entry easier.

1955-12-18-dj3a-usps-mail-dispatcher1 1955-12-18-dj3a-usps-mail-dispatcher2

Then, on eBay, this brochure has been available for a couple months. There’s no date on the brochure itself, but the seller claims it is from 1955:

1955-jeep-disaptcher-mail-flyer

Both documents show what appear to be the same hard top and same side cut body, but the jeeps in the photos aren’t quite the same. Unlike the top jeep, the bottom jeep has the same hubcaps as the early DJ-3As, but has custom parking lights. The top photo has the side mirror on the right side, while the bottom jeep has the rear view mirror on what would normally be the driver’s side. The seats are colored slightly differently. So, are these two jeeps both experimental models?

What surprises the DJ guys the most is that we weren’t aware the low cut body was available as of late 1955. None of the marketing materials show that body as an option in 1956, as this early brochure demonstrates:

1956-dj3a-four-page-dispatcher-brochure-lores-2

So, the search for information about early dispatcher mail jeeps continues. Anyone have more photos or information about these early post office jeeps?

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $8000.

PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY:: It’s not clear to me why this DJ-3A is listed on a UK site or whether this is a real ad, but it’s an interesting DJ-3A none-the-less. What I think has happened is that the description and photos may have been scraped from eBay. I looked for this jeep on eBay, but could not find it.

“First of all. must start by saying that this NOT a post office jeep. In 1955 &1956 Willys put  out this vehicle & called  it a Jeep Dispatcher / Delivery vehicle . deal for use in congested metropolitan areas. To me it’s just a cool little jeep. This jeep had a frame off restoration a couple years back. t that time the original owner changed the transmission from a manual 3 speed synchromesh to a turbo 350 automatic with a 6 volt system. The original transmission is included. very nut &bolt was saved just incase to switch it back. The jeep is in great shape & runs good. Just had it inspected in may 2013. can’t think of anything it needs. esides maybe a tune up.   $500. Paypal deposit is required at end of auction. Balance to be paid within 7 days with postal mo. ank check or cash. Buyer is responsible for arranging shipping. I’ll be glad to assist in loading or working with you. (11/11/2016) While it looks in great shape, it isn’t quite as stock as the seller would like to claim. There are lots of little things (seats, top, parking lights. and hubcaps for starters. It also appears to have a Corvette air cleaner (chrome — these aren’t cheap) rather than a black painted air cleaner. The shape of the air cleaner looks correct.

“Restored California Jeep with Minor Upgrades
No Major Body or Driveline Modifications

Perfect for the Cabin, Beach House, or Just a Local Weekend Jeep!
ABOUT THIS 1964 JEEP DJ-3 – OVERALL CONDITION
Simply stated, this is a, extremely nice example of the increasingly rare Jeep convertible. We often see Jeeps listed for sale but typically they are, to put it mildly, in less than good condition. Rarely do we see an example of a nice California restored Jeep DJ-3A. This is one such example.

This particular Jeep retains the proper L-134 4 cylinder engine and the floor shift 3-speed transmission.

While the engine and transmission have not been replaced with large, inappropriate units, a benefit to true enthusiasts and collectors, it is the car’s overall condition that make it especially appealing. When the Jeep was restored, it was brought back to its former glory with only minor cosmetic modifications or changes from stock. No large, over-sized mud tires, added gauges, sound system or other modifications were added to the car and it remains basically in the same basic configuration as it would have been seen in 1964.

The Jeep has been very well cared for in the months since its restoration, and it shows. The car has been adult owned and has no signs of ever been abused or mistreated. When restored, the Jeep received a complete re-paint in a striking metallic blue and a quality canvas blue and white striped top was fitted along with rear, matching cushions. New seats were added along with new seat belts, the dash was painted to match and, while the Jeep was disassembled, the entire inside was treated with bed liner to protect it from rust and give it a lovely appearance.

Overall, this is one of the strongest running and driving examples that we have seen in many years. The photos accurately depict the high quality of the body and paint, interior and engine / trunk areas. The car is free from the typical Jeep rust and even California buyers will be amazed at the lack of rust on the underside, rocker panels, trunk, engine bay, doors and other typically rust affected areas on the Jeep.

Chrome bumpers were added and they fit well and are perfectly straight and free from damage or rust. They do not show the light pitting or discoloration often seen on cars from other parts of the country where exposure to moisture and the elements have discolored all of the exterior chrome and other trim. The car’s body is truly in great shape and we continue to get remarks that the car has the appearance of being freshly refurbished / restored.

The Jeep received a new, high quality complete re-paint and is really striking. The metallic paint is high gloss and free from accident damage. The paint is free from cracking, peeling or any damage that detracts from the appearance and charm of the Jeep. The sides, rear cargo area and inner portions of the Jeep are straight and free from signs of rust, or damage. Perhaps most important, the Jeep’s body is free from modifications. The top has been recently replaced in high quality fabric similar to that found on the original Jeeps used as resort or beach vehicles and the top structure was restored and painted to match the body color. Rear cushions on either side add a nice touch and are upholstered in the same, color coordinated material.

The front windshield is free from any cracks, and in very good condition. The front windshield folds down when the top is removed for complete “open air” motoring. The chrome latches hold the hood down.

The interior is very simple and is fitted with two new matching seats that while not original are more comfortable and very attractive. The Jeep is also fitted with new seat belts. The dash is not cut-up like so many we see and includes some of the original gauges, switches and other items, including an opening on the left side of the dash for a radio (one is not fitted at this time but could easily be added). The interior is finished with bed liner for durability and front rubber mats accent the front drivers and passenger’s sides of the DJ-3A.

The windshield wipers are vacuum operated, turn signals and brake lights work and the speedometer is functional as well.

Jeep fans will tell you that rust is a major culprit with older examples but, as a result of this car’s long life in California, there are no signs of rust / rust through.

The wheels are chrome with body color center hubcaps that provide a nice touch. The wheels / tires are 14″ fitted with new matching steel belted radial in 205/75R14.”

1960 DJ-3A Surrey Auctioned for $46,750

• CATEGORIES: DJ-3A, Features • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Sold for $46,750.

This 1960 DJ-3A Surrey will be auctioned in January of 2017 by Sotheby’s. The jeep is described as a “beautifully presented flawless restoration”. That statement is followed by a series of inaccurate statements regarding the history of DJ-3A, such as the DJ-3A was introduced in 1955 (nope 1956). You can see all the pics and information here:

1960-dj3a

As Colin pointed out to Sotheby’s, despite some great work on this, there are actually numerous flaws with this restoration:

  1. Front bumper is from a 1948-49 Willys Jeepster, way too wide for a DJ3A Surrey.
  2. Valance panel behind the front bumper is too long, as it has to cover the Willys Jeepster front bumper brackets.
  3. Air filter is from a 1945-1949 Willys CJ2A 4WD Jeep and is made by Oakes.  The correct air filter should be either a small 7 inch dry air filter attached to the carburetor alone or a Donaldson oil bath air filter that attaches in the same position as the Oakes filter on this Jeep.
  4. The Fram oil filter is of the larger heavy duty unit, not the smaller one used by the civilian 4 cylinder Jeeps from 1946-1964.
  5. The windshield straps are incorrect, using webbed belts instead of vinyl with center buckle and three grommets, no additional adjusters on the straps at all.
  6. Windshield grab handles were chrome on Surreys, as were the side mirrors.
  7. The rear bumper is 1948-49 Willys Jeepster, has Willys Overland stamped into the center of the bumper and is too wide for a Surrey.  Surrey chrome bumpers were plain, without  the Willys Overland script.  Willys dropped the Overland part of the scripting for the 1950 models, but kept the Willys script on the 1950-51 Jeepsters and station wagon rear bumpers from 1950 through 1963 when the last of the old square bodies were used and the new Wagoneer station wagon debuted.
  8. The speedometer reads in kilometers, rather than miles per hour.  Surreys and all DJ3A Jeep speedometers read in miles per hour and calibrated from 0 through 9 after 1958.  0-8 for 1956- early 1958.  Kilometers were used on export Jeeps.

Year? DJ-3A Albuquerque, NM **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: DJ-3A, Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1200.

Colin did some due diligence and determined that this is likely a former airport baggage conveyor DJ. Here’s a very similar conveyor DJ from the 3B page.

Here’s what Colin deduced: The mounts on the front frame rails are in a position where the front conveyor supports can be mounted.

The rear platform for the conveyor is attached to the rear corner of the tub on those DJ3As and on the sides of the CJ3B as well (see the CJ-3B page).  It would preclude the rear taillights, and  rear fuel filler that is standard on the DJ3A, but one photo of the DJ3A with the North Central Convair 500 shows the fuel fill tube low on the right rear corner, and the rear wheel opening is modified just like the one on 20796 (See the CJ-3B page for pics side and rearish

Also, the right rear corner of the tub is modified to clear the conveyor.I suspect the large holes in the rear panels helped support the bracing for the rear platform and also carried the hydraulic lines and controls for on the ground operation.  The Line lock was for the brakes and the chrome handle on the left side of the dash were no doubt for the governor.  The emergency brake T- handle was moved to a location where the driver could set it, otherwise it would have been under the conveyor apparatus.

“1950’s model DJ3A Military Willys Jeep DJ3A. Body in great shape, nearly rust free, have engine and transmission, 2 windshields, most of the major parts are there. Needs restoration or used for parts. Too many projects already so decided to move on.”
