Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. A couple updates for Sunday. We’ve had family in town this weekend, so things are busy around here.
One family member brought over these locally roasted beans, so we decided to create our own Yipao scene. We couldn’t have done it without the jeep, a gift from Jerry Huber last year, and the Colombian poncho, a gift years ago from Sebastian Lobo-Guerrero (8 years ago … I had a little less gray hair!).

The newest issue of the Dispatcher Magazine landed in my mailbox today. This issue includes a look at Bob Christy’s Empire Tractor “Rena”, along with a pre-jeep look at history thanks to Jim Allen. Dan Fucella continues describing his 10,000 mile journey in a wagon, while Eric Jarvis shares his D-Day-related journey to France.

Maury spotted this article. Bell and Buck is updating CJ-8’s in conjunction with Kyle Smith of Bird Buggy, to create a more luxurious CJ-8.
I found this cool and rare brochure for the ill-fated Sierra Dana 20 overdrive on eBay. It’s printed on 8.5″x11″ paper, so the marketing budget must have been tight (as I understand it, working capital was an early issue, which played a part in the demise of the company). A few years ago there was a post of an article that also highlighted this rare overdrive.

This 1943 image shows a crowd gathered around a jeep as it carries a wounded American. There are several articles about the war with Japan in this August 23, 1943, issue of the Daily Illini, but what caught me by surprise was Northwest Airlines’ attempt to secure a direct air route from Alaska to Tokyo even almost two years before the war eventually ended, as if we weren’t at war with Japan! Talk about advanced planning.
The price of the paper ad from a Janney’s Toys catalog(?) seems crazy to me, but the ad is a neat bit of info if you own one of these two jeep toys.

This issue of the Globe-Trotter is undated, but I’m guessing it is the March/April 1956 issue. I’ve published some of this a few years ago. Here is the whole issue.
This brochure provides a good overview about how a division of Kaiser Industries began with in civilian government business with the successful post office bid (FJ-3s) in 1960. By 1971, the unit had produced a wide range of government vehicles. That year, American Motors incorporated the business unit into the wholly owned subsidiary AM General Corporation.

This is an interesting story. George Baxter of ArmyJeepParts.com rebuilt this 1946 CJ-2A with a Willys MB frame, one of handful of production CJ-2As with MB frames. Thanks to Mark Smith and WarJeeps.com for alerting me.
This September 6, 1943, photo shows a training exercise in Lubbock, Texas, with soldiers emerging from a glider on an MB ready for a fight. These days you can learn more about glider training at the Silent Wings Museum in Lubbock.

This photo dated 11/12/1953 shows oil tycoon Glenn McCarthy, also known as ‘Diamond Jim’, aboard a CJ-3B. The CJ-3B sits atop some type of rail(?) car.

This modified CJ-3A has a variety of updates. It’s got reversed springs in the front and 4-link suspension in the rear. The seller is a long time jeep guy.

This 1956 CJ-5/CJ-6/CJ-3B brochure targeted the export market. It’s form number is Form W-250-6X, however it looks nothing like it’s Form W-250-6 CJ-5 brochure counter part. It’s larger and folds out to 17″ x 22″ (vs 17″ x 11″ for the domestic version). Why re-use the form number, but make the brochure wholly different from the domestic brochure? I haven’t a clue.
This 1956 Wagon brochure Form W-253-6 likely has an export version labeled Form W-253-6X, yet I have had no luck locating it. I expect the export version design will be similar to Form W-250-6X (CJ-5/CJ-6/CJ-3B) and Form W-252-6X (Truck). This brochure opens up to 17″x11″.
