I spotted this Ford GP set up to lay wire (according to the caption). I’m not sure what pix “D-575” is.

“New 1/4-ton “bantam” truck being used for wire-laying during demonstration at Fort Myer, Virginia. For more complete data, see caption for pix D-575″

White Owl, NC, Willys Dealership

• CATEGORIES: Old Images • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

After seeing the photo from Bob, Buz forwarded this photo.

Buz writes, “Here is a photo from White Owl Parts Co. which started out as a Willys Dealership after the war. It’s still there and if you look carefully over their shelves of parts you can still find NOS Willys parts. It’s located in Kinston, NC. They are the nicest people in the world, might be worth a visit if you ever get to this part of the country. The original photo is still on the wall in their office.”

1948 Photo of Jeep Display in Florida

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Mark pointed out that the wagon at the far right of the photo looks like a shorty. After several agreements, I did some research and found the ad below.  The ‘wagon’ on the right is actually a ‘Station Sedan’ model while the one on the left is the ‘Station Wagon’ model.  The Station Sedan had the added benefit of being “more maneuverable and easier to park”.  The ad doesn’t make it look short, but the picture below sure does.  I have confirmed the wheelbases were the same (see comments).

The  State Archives of Florida at Florida Memory, http://floridamemory.com/items/show/53295 has this great photo created by Spottswood Studio of the Family of Jeeps.

Here’s a 1949 brochure that discusses the differences between a Station Sedan and a Station Wagon.  Note how the styling on the right matches the styling on the ‘Sedan’ in the top of the ad. I found this for sale at the Jumping Frog site.

1943 Photo of Half Track Jeep towing Skiers **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

How cool is this photo!

“For sale is a photo of a prototype tracked snow Jeep taken near Prado, Colorado in April, 1943. It was undergoing testing at the time but apparently never made it into the field. It has skis on the front for steering with the steering wheel. (This method is an early version of the rope tow.) The photo is an 8 x 10 in size and is an enlargement of the original 4 x 5 factory photo made about 25 years ago. Seller will call the photo original since it was made from the original negative although it was made later on. Good luck with your bidding”

Mr. Rather and His Dogs and Jeep

• CATEGORIES: Features, Library Collections, Old Images This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Walter Hill, the director of the Horry County Museum, forwarded these pics from the Museum’s archives. Great images!

“Mr. Prather owned a service station in Myrtle Beach as well.  He lived in a community on the Waccamaw River/Inter-coastal Waterway called Socastee, not far from Myrtle Beach.  Anyone familiar with the area may be familiar with the Socastee Turn Bridge that allowed road traffic across the Inter-coastal Waterway and river traffic down the Inter-coastal Waterway.

Most of the pictures in this collection appear to have been taken near the end of WWII (some images in the collection show GI’s boarding the bus at the Draft office in Conway) up to the early fifties, judging by the automobiles in the pics.  One picture shows a license tag on the jeep and I want to say it says 1952.  Maybe better eyes can tell if I am correct or not.”

A Photo of Bill Mauldin in a Jeep

Buz found this picture on a biography blog post about Gregory Duncan.  Here, Greg is pictured with Bill Mauldin, a photo neither Buz nor I had seen.  You’ll notice “Up Front” stenciled on the front bumper, which is also the name of a book published that contains a wide variety of his drawings.

1951 Ringling Barnum Circus Jeeps 3, 4 & 5

• CATEGORIES: Features, Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles, Old Images • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The Milner Library at Illinois State University has a collection of Circus Memorabilia, including a nice digital archive. I’ve selected a couple of images that show jeeps Numbers 3, 4, and 5 from the Ringling Barnum Circus.

As you can see below, No 3 is working hard holding up Carmen Barrigon, while No. 4 lazily watches.

http://digital.library.illinoisstate.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/circus/id/1166/rec/4

1951-circus-jeep-milner-library2

Meanwhile, No. 5 is doing all the heavily lifting. The photographer, Sverre O. Braathen, calls this a Ford Jeep, but it looks like a CJ-3A the way the bumper is bolted onto the frame, though it also has a CJ-2A windshield. The rear PTO is raising the platforms for seating. My circus book has a good shot of the PTO setup from the rear, but I haven’t had a chance to scan that.
