“What a cool Jeep! This 1947 Jeep Willy’s 4-Wheel Drive fires right up, and drives around the parking lot quite well! It’s hard to find them in such good of shape. Whether you are looking for something fun to drive around town on a weekend or just something with collector’s value to store away for years to come, this Jeep Willys could be just the vehicle you’re looking for!

The flat four-cylinder motor still propels this Jeep along quite well. The leather canvas soft top is water tight, and does a great job of keeping out the cold and the weather while the modern Best Top soft doors make getting in and out a breeze. Locking front hubs, and a 4WD system that is fully functional make this Jeep as practical to have for the homestead as it is cool.

Call us today for more information, or stop by today to check out this vintage relic for yourself.

“Would consider trades for a softail.
I am begrudgingly selling my rat rod jeep project that I’ve built over the course of a few years.

Originally a CA car (except for the last 2 years it’s been here in Key West), I bought it in the San Francisco Bay Area after someone had crashed into the rear while it was parked on the road. It barely ran, had the original straight 6 in, and was a mess.

For those of you who don’t know, the DJ-5 series is an automatic, 2wd jeep from the factory. Often used as rural mail trucks, the DJ-5 often comes right and drive. This is a left hand drive, but I suspect that someone changed it to LHD before I got it.

Fourteen Jeep Adventures 1940s-1960s

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I’ve been compiling a list of jeep adventures. These are just some that I’ve documented. There’s  few more to add to the list, but this is good for starters. If you know of others, let me know.

  1. Bantam BRC in 1940: The earliest documented trip occurred September 29th, 1940. That was the day the very first jeep—the original Bantam BRC constructed in only 49 days—was driven 270 miles from Butler, Pennsylvania, to the testing ground in Holabird, Maryland. It was an amazing accomplishment given the newly designed vehicle had been barely assembled, let alone tested.
  2. Wolf Blint in 1945: Near the end of World War II, Wolff Blint escaped fighting on the eastern front by driving across Europe to Paris. He documented his story in his memoir, By Jeep To Freedom. The book is out of print and difficult to find.
  3. Soldier and Bride Return from Europe circa 1945: An unconfirmed event, the story unfolds with a U.S. soldier marrying a woman in Europe following WWII. Somehow, he is able to secure a jeep. Together, the pair drive to a port in France or Germany, have the jeep shipped to America, and then drive the remainder of the route to the man’s hometown in Illinois.
  4. Ben Carlin in 1948-1958: In 1948, Australian Ben Carlin began a trek around the world by heading east over the Atlantic Ocean in a modified 1943 Ford GPA (a jeep made to float over water) named ‘Half-Safe’. Over the succeeding ten years, Ben and Half-Safe traveled 50,000 miles over a period of ten years. His exploits filled three books, each book covering his voyage in different ways. Half-Safe can be seen in action in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-Gqi-RlbO0
  5. Helen & Frank Schreider in 1954-1955. Helen & Frank Schreider first jeep ended in a failed attempt to cross Panama in a Willys wagon when their jeep was beat to death as they drove across a long train trestle. For their 1954-55 attempt, they purchased and customized a Ford GPA, naming it La Tortuga. Starting in Alaska, the pair traveled all the way to South America. Subsequently, they wrote a book called 20,000 Miles South: A Pan American Adventure in a Seagoing Jeep From the Arctic (A nearly identical version is published under the name La Tortuga). They also filmed some of their trip and toured the United States giving lectures about their experiences.
  6. Three Boy Scouts Travel 44,000 Miles in 1955: Dubbed Operation Pineapple, three Sao Paulo Boy Scouts—Hugo Vidal, Charles Downey, and Jan Stekly—drove from South America to Alaska and back as part of their effort to attend the 8th World Scout Jamboree in Canada. The CJ-3B Page has an excellent overview of their trip.
  7. Dorothy Rogers & Louise Ostberg in 1955-1956: Dorothy and Louise were two college professors from New York who met while traveling in Europe. They successfully circumvented Africa in a jeep wagon. Dorothy later wrote a book about their adventure called Jeopardy and a Jeep.
  8. Joe Ceurvorst in 1956: Joe wrote a book called Africa in a Jeep about driving around the northern part of the African continent.
  9. Roy Follows and Noel Dudgeon in 1958: Joe and Roy were two Colonial Police officers fighting Chinese Communists near the end of the Malayan Emergency. Ready to head home, the pair bought a Willys MB in February of 1958, then begin a long journey home full of obstacles, broken parts, encounters with unfriendlies and more. Their tale from Singapore to the United Kingdom unfolds in their book about the trip: The First Overland: Four Wheels and Frontier.
  10. Jack & Doreen Shakespeare in 1958: Jack and Doreen drove their early wagon from Australia to England. Lucky for us, they filmed their trip. You can relive their adventures on youtube.
  11. Helen and Frank Schreider in 1960: Ready to his the road again, Helen and Frank rebuild a second Ford GPA that they use to float the Ganges River in India. Their five month 1960 India adventure from the mouth of the Ganges to its source filled forty-two pages of the October, 1960, issue of National Geographic.
  12. Helen and Frank Schreider in 1960-1961: On the heels of their India trip, the Schrieders, again with National Geographic support, tackled the breadth of Indonesia, a 17,000 island archipelago, going to places and completing a trip that few, if anyone, has replicated. Their 4,000 mile trip lasted a year. Their ability to shuttle between islands and over land took them to places no vehicles had gone. Helen and Frank wrote two subsequent articles for National Geographic (May 1961 & August 1962) and a second book, the Drums of Tonkin: An Adventure In Indonesia. They went on to work regularly for National Geographic, though their jeeping days ended.
  13. Harold Stephens in the mid-1960s: Harold drove around the world in a CJ-5 and Toyota Landcruiser. He wrote about his experience in Who Needs a Road? Harold went on to become a travel author.
  14. Dorothy Rogers & Louise Ostberg in the mid-1960s: In the late 1950s, Willys Motors introduced two Forward Control jeep trucks called the FC-150 & FC-170s. Dorthy and Louise thought the latter would make a great vehicle to tour the world. So, they bought one and set off on their second major jeep trip. Dorothy later wrote about their experiences in Highways Across the Horizon.

General Supply & Hesse Compressor History

• CATEGORIES: Features, Industrial-Welder-Generator This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Thanks to Brett, I’ve added some photos of a later model General Supply V4 (possibly a Ford V4) at the bottom of the post.

Rick Webb shared what he knows about the history of General Supply Compressors & Hesse Compressors. His father Paul Webb played a principle role in the compressor’s development. I’ve included pics below to show how much alike they looked.

For reference, this is a General Supply GS-250 Compressor powered by an L-head. More pics here:

Contrast the one above with this one, a Hesse Horney Compressor powered by an L-head. More pics here:

Rick began, After reading information on youtube and the forums it seems as though there are a lot of questions concerning the hesse hornet and the gs-260 air compressors.I don’t claim to have all the answers however I can shed some light on the development of these units.

My father, Paul Web, lost his dad at the young age of 24 and took a job at the General Supply and Leasing Company in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1951 as a delivery driver. A division of the McDowell Tire Company, General Supply sold tire changing equipment.

When he took the job he met a man by the name of Dick Roberts who was an engineer. They soon hired a man with the last name of Simes (pronounced “Sims”) whose first name I do not recall.Simes was from Arkansas and was a self taught mechanic. He could not read or write, so they taught him to sign his name so he could cash his paycheck. He never used a torque wrench; however when his engines were tested his torque specs were spot on. Hop Town Pizza is Opening A Restaurant

In 2014, Ann ran into two women who operated a mobile wood fired pizza truck called Hoptown Pizza. The two, Carrie Wright and Lori Roy, didn’t know much about their funky little truck, so Ann explained to them that it was an FC-150 and that there was a whole network of folks who owned FCs.

In 2015, Mark Smith published an article about them: http://jeeptruckstories.blogspot.com/2015/02/hopping-along-in-fc-dream.html

This winter, the pair plan to open up a rustic wood fired restaurant about a 50 minute drive west of us near Yakima, Washington. As part of their efforts, they are running a kick starter campaign. You can learn more and watch their video  https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/308695668/help-us-grow-from-food-truck-to-rustic-wood-fired or visit their website here: http://www.hoptownpizza.com. 1963 FC-170 Eden, UT **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: FC150-FC170-M677 • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

Looks ready to roll.

“This 1963 Willys Jeep FC-170 is a strong running example of the companys medium wheelbase Forward Control model, This FC-170 is powered by a super reliable and ready for work and fun 226ci Super Hurricane motor.

It is rare to find these trucks in nice condition today as most were worked very hard and then cast aside. This FC-170 was expertly painted in the popular factory offered combination of red and cream. This example retains its proper tailgate markings and factory badging. Glass is in good condition as well, a big plus as good replacements are difficult to find. The side-mounted spare and un-incorporated tail lights complete the look.

Used primarily for fair weather weekend driving this truck looks just as it did when restored. The FC-170 model offered a nice compromise between looks and utility, as shorter 150s have less cargo space and longer 180 and 190s tend to look a bit stretched and ungainly.

Inside the cab things are nicely kept and almost entirely OEM. All gauges, lights and switches work as designed, including the interesting single digit scaled speedometer.

Power comes from a Continental Super Hurricane L-head straight six. Displacing 226 cubic inches and rated for about 110 HP and 190 lb. ft. at very low revs, this one starts easily, runs smoothly and offer excellent reliability. Power is distributed through a floor-shift 4-speed manual and hi/lo range transfer case, and all four tires are new.
This Unique Willys FC-170 amazingly comes with its original New Jersey Title. This is an outstanding opportunity to own a unique and highly sought after chapter in Jeep History.”

The DJ-3A “Wire Gauze” or “Dry Air” Filter

• CATEGORIES: Builds, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.
1954-kaiser-darrin-dry-airfilter

A pretty correct looking dry air or wire gauze filter from a 1954 Kaiser Darrin. Not the diagonal wire mesh on the exterior and the two prominent lips on the lid. The rubber piece on the top is unique to the Darrins. The DJ-3A did not use the rubber top piece.

UPDATE: This modification of the Oil Bath system into a dry air system by installing an air filter inside the oil bath canister might interest some readers: http://z4.invisionfree.com/CJ3B_Bulletin_Board/ar/t1267.htm

On DJ-3As, the stock air filter is a  “Wire Gauze” or “Dry Air” filter type. The oil bath filter commonly seen on earlier L-134 engines was an upgrade option on the DJ-3As. When I looked to see whether my firewall had the holes necessary to mount the oil bath filter, I found the firewall had not been drilled. So, Rusty must have been equipped with a dry air filter.

As far as we know, Willys Motors only installed the dry air filter on the DJ-3As. This same filter appeared chromed on some 1953 & 1954 Corvettes and some 1954 161 Darrins (perhaps other years, too). It’s likely that if someone has one of these lying around, they probably don’t know what it is. If you happen to have one, I’d be interested in it.

Below is one example of a filter about to be restored with a modern mesh in the middle. Charles explained how the NOS filter material can be reproduced: “A NOS corvette, Darrin, or DJ filter core is rare and expensive. Once in a couple of blue moons they show up on eBay. However, they can be made easily . The inner and outer ring are made of extremely thin expanded metal. Make the inner ring, wrap around some air filter grade copper mesh wrap (eBay) and then wrap the outer ring and secure. Unfortunately, the copper would deteriorate over the years and has been talked about badly. Even though they were called dry air filters they were supposed to be kept oiled.”

According to Bill Brown, there’s a K&N filter that can be used. He couldn’t remember the part number, but the “OD of it is 6 3/8″; the ID is 5 1/4″; and the height is 1 1/2”. This is a filter with an accordion fold all the way around with a molded “rubber” top an bottom. Molded into both the top and bottom are a pair of K & N marks the Identification AO62B4 and the words Oil Type.”

dry-filter-1964-surrey1

This photo shows some of the parts to build a custom dry air filter. The bottom is original. The mesh left and right should be criss cross in diamond shapes rather than circles. The air filter at the bottom is meant to replace the shredded copper originally between the circular mesh. The felt circle helps seal the top lid to the tops of the mesh. The item on the lower right compresses the felt onto the mesh.

Here are examples of the filter installed. The diameter of the top lid is about 6 3/4 inches:

dry-filter-1964-surrey2

This rebuilt unit has the incorrect mesh and an aftermarket filter.

Jason64DJ35

This one could be original. I can’t tell what kind of mesh surrounds the shredded interior.

UPDATE: **Status Unknown** Was $4000.

1947-truck-medford-or2 1947-truck-medford-or4 1947-truck-medford-or3

“The truck is an early 1947-according to the VIN # this is the oldest surviving Willys 4×4 truck on the Willys forum. It is likely that there is an older survivor somewhere, but this is one of the first. The body is in exceptional shape for a vintage Willys truck. I’d ballpark estimate that 70-80% of these old Willys trucks have been so abused that they are frankly not worth restoring. This one is. When I acquired the truck a few years back, the PO had sanded and prepped the body for paint-then lost interest. so I sprayed it with two light coats of the original Michigan Yellow paint to protect it. there are a few small wrinkles and dings, and the bed floor has a few small holes, but there are no hidden surprises. The only bondo I saw was two (small) screw holes for a mirror on the passenger door and two teaspoon size repairs on the front fenders. The truck looks good in the pics, but needs a repairs including re-welding the hood supports before a final coat.

“”Willy” as he’s known, is a 1962 Jeep Fleetvan built for the postal service by Willys up in Toledo, OH. They only built 100 of these trucks so this is one of literally a handful that are still out there. Not only that but this one has been built from the ground up with a small block 350 engine mated to a turbo 350 tranny and a camaro rear end. Starts right up and runs like a champ with plenty of power for this little mail truck. Could actually be a daily driver if you don’t mind that there aren’t many creature comforts.
