Videos — The 1977 Yakima Mud Race Yakima, Wa

• CATEGORIES: Racing, videos • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: I haven’t recycled this point since 2009, so many might not have seen it.

=====================

Originally posted Feb 26, 2009: This is another set of excerpts from an episode of Exploration Northwest called ‘Mud Race’. As I reported in the post about the Meeker, aka Naches, Trail post, Linda McCune from the Don McCune Library kindly has given me permission to provide some clips from the Jeeping1 DVD, a collection of 3 episodes of Exploration Northwest related to pacific northwest jeeping. To order this DVD, you can contact Linda McCune at 206 726-2650 and ask for the Jeeping1 DVD.  It costs $24.95.  I encourage you to purchase is as she has the video for a Jeeping2 DVD, but has not created it yet.

The race was sponsored by the Yakima Jeep Jockeys, a club formed in 1963. They began their 4×4 Championship Racing series in 1971.

The Mud Bowl episode was shown in 1977.  Mostly, it follows Jim Merritt as he prepares for the race, discussing a little about how they silicone various items to keep out water.  Plenty of video showing different stages of the race.  It’s a bit reminiscent of the Florida swamp races, though the water holes aren’t quite as deep or long (If you have never heard of it, you can read about the Florida swamp races at four wheeler’s online magazine and here’s a you tube video from a 1996 race).

From the Mud Race episode, I selected two clips.  Clip one shows Jim getting ready to race and shows the driver’s pre-race meeting.  The second clip shows the final race with Bill Smith from Tacoma taking the win.

Here’s Clip One:

Here’s Clip Two:

1954-cj3b-kettlefalls-wa9

“Fully restored. 1954 Willys Jeep. This Jeep was from Arizona so it is a survivor. With the exception of the tailgate and a few pieces in the drivers footwell, its original metal. In total there’s less than a 1/4 cup of filler and that is in the hood covering an existing weld done years ago. The body was completely stripped, sand blasted and coated with high build epoxy primer so that we could examine for rusty areas. Then coated with 3 coats of Luzon red base and 3 clearcoats. the interior is coated in color matched bed liner, as were the wheel wells. See photos of the d/s floor replacement and top hat stiffeners. The original 15” wheels were blasted and powder coated and fitted with period all terrain tires of the correct proportions.
The transmission including transfer case were rebuilt with new bearings and several “out of spec’n” shafts. A new Saturn overdrive was installed so that you can get down the road at approaching respectable speeds. Most people that pass, just give an energetic thumbs up. (we did see 60mph one time) but typically you’re rushing around at 50-55mph.
The head was removed, and valves recut. The cylinders were still within tolerance, and she exhibits no smoking and uses no oil. The pressures were all within 10% of each other. The drive train has all new CV joints, transmission brake parts and axle seals. The brake master cylinder is new as are the front slave cylinders. The backs had been replaced the year we bought her!
The color is Luzon red, a beautiful deep red that was a Willys color for the 1952 jeeps. The colors for ’54 were slightly better than boring. Just about the first thing people comment about is the color. She has a 2″dia roll bar behind the seats and is fitted with a Bestop top that is easily removed or installed for late fall or spring driving. We keep the top on but doors off and sides rolled up for sun protection.
It’s a fun Jeep, don’t expect to cover hundreds of miles of freeway driving. These post war Jeeps were almost farmers tractors. But with the huge radiator and fan, she will happily rock hop all day.
We literally have thousands of dollars of invoices for the new parts.”

It ran great until it spun a main bearing last spring so it doesn’t run now and I don’t have the time to get it there at the moment. I don’t need to sell it but would rather have someone fix it then it just sit. It comes with an extra hood, grill, bed extension, half cab, transfer case, one spare wheel, and some other parts like a front bumper.
I’m asking $3,000 and have a clean clear title in hand.”

Modifications:
V8 engine (extended engine compartment)
T10 Transmission
Roll bar

Mechanic special
Off road vehicle – not for city driving

Tires are newer, but flat. You’ll need an air compressor to air them up. There’s power at the storage unit so you can plug something in. It should start. It’s only been sitting a year. I recommend having it towed/trailered anyway.

I am devastated to lose this. I grew up with it. My father made most of the modifications to it. It was our fishing/camping vehicle.

My boyfriend just passed and I can’t keep it. I want it to go to someone that will love it and use it.

I’m available Sunday to meet.”

Roger’s New Howe FC Firetruck

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I HAD planned on doing posts for this morning, but yesterday we discovered water near our water tank, which soon lead to discovering one of our pipes (in a wall) was leaking. So, holes were cut in the wall and leak verified (at copper corner piece joint). Several hours and one trip to Home Depot later, I was able to get everything fixed (thank goodness for push joints). Whew.

In lieu of updates, we’ll celebrate Roger Martin’s newest acquisition: A 1960 Howe-modified FC that was formerly in the Toledo Firefighters Museum. It run and drives and is in great shape! Congrats Roger!

Body Mounted, Front Clip in Progress

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I am typing this while recovering from a wasp sting that caused my right hand to swell (it’s been an odd health year for me!), which sent us to the local doc-in-a-box to get some steroids, which in turn helped reduce the swelling (after 24 hours). I’ve never had a reaction to a stinger like that, so it’s a bit of a surprise!

Last week I finalized the body mounts. Hinges attach the body to the back of the frame in two places. Two single bolts with large washers hold the mid section of the body to a plate on the roll bar. And, two bolts through angled aluminum hold the bottom front portion of the cowl to an angle piece on either side of the body. On the upper portion of the sides of the cowl some rubber taped to the inside of a bracket keep the cowl from shifting back and forth.

The front clip is proving a bigger challenge than the body. First, I had to cut out part of the the driver’s rear-side portion of the front clip because it was too narrow and hit the side of the body. So, I am creating a form and will lay some new glass down (along with patching a few other places).

Then, once the hood fits properly, I will have have to build special mounts for the front clip. The goal is to reduce the stress on the hood, as these things are often mounted with quick release setups that allow the body to flex, making it more prone to breaking and cracking and/or rubbing on the body.

Here are a few pics:

I decided to to throw a couple blocks (made from some of my grandfather’s wood) onto the hood that are a nod to the original hood blocks, but will also tie in a frame underneath the hood to help support and mount the front of the hood.

2023-07-02-racing-body2 2023-07-02-racing-body3

You can see part of where the hood is cut out. The form will allow for the new portion of the hood also down fender to flare outward more (or that’s the plan). 2023-07-02-racing-body4
