1944 Photo of Elizabeth McDougald in Jeep

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images

An October 21, 1944, photo and caption of Elizabeth McDougald of New York City highlighted her appointment to “London’s first Negro-staffed club, the Duchess”. She’d been appointed direct of the Red Cross club. Some letters by Ms. McDougald to military officers related to racial issues can be found here. A great deal of detailed information about her was uncovered through an auction purchase and subsequent research by Sherry Howard.

Trade: 1913 S76 Roaders For 2A/3A/3B maybe MB/GPW Boone, NC

The history of this car is that there was only four 4 ever made. One was crashed and scrapped, one was rebuilt and now in England, and one is currently at Goodwood racing circuit, And, an  engine is in a museum in Italy. Mine is a replica.  Parts are very hard to find from 1913, with most needing to be fabricated, but it runs real good and stops good, and is drivable .

What I am looking for is a CJ-2A, CJ-3B or a rough MB modified is ok. Non running is ok, too, but it must be complete. I can get a trailer to move both items and they can be within 500 miles of Boone North Carolina, maybe a little more covering Virginia, Tennessee, south Carolina some in Georgia and of course North Carolina. I place my value about $3000, but a trade would be preferable.

It my untrained eye, it looks similar to this 1911 Fiat S76:

Hy Lo Pump Hydraulic Pump Question

• CATEGORIES: Features

Dan Moreton asked a question that I can’t answer. Anyone have thoughts? You can contact him directly here ttlmidcounty @ gmail.com (remove spaces around the @)

“I have a 1967 Power King Tractor that utilizes the large Square Model Jeep Hy-Lo Hydraulic pump to lift/lower the plow. It has a 1/4″ intake and output that connects to a dual action hydraulic cylinder. The unit is well suited for this operation.

I have a manual hitch and wanted to make it hydraulic. I saw a Jeep Hi-Lo self contained unit UHT 37046. When it arrived I noted it was smaller,( almost square) had almost identical hardware and fitting on top except it only has one 1/4″ street elbow.

How do I connect this unit to operate a dual action hydraulic cylinder? This tractor is my first experience with hydraulics so keep that in mind when you answer.”

Gran Manufacturing’s Hydraulic Loader

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features

UPDATE II: Todd’s got a near complete version fo the loader/fork lift. You can review all the photos along with a brochure that accompanied it on this page: http://www.willys-overland.com/forklift/

Todd Paisley’s Gran Hydraulic Forklift / Loader

UPDATE: Barry shared a link to the video, likely from late 1954 or early 1955, below that demonstrates the Gran Loader in action between minutes 9:24 to 9:50.

In October of 1954, Willys Motors announced the introduction of the Gran Manufacturing Hydraulic Loader. The Loader was unique in that it was essentially a rear facing forklift attached to a jeep. It was available in two sizes, one with 108″ lift capability and a smaller one with 69.5″ lift capability, and in two styles, adjustable or non-adustable forks. One feature noted was that it ONLY took 8 hours to install, which made it pretty much a permanent jeep feature it would seem to me.

Gran Manufacturing was based in Perrysburg, Ohio, but I couldn’t uncover any more information about that company. Below are some brochures that depict the loader.

Note that the 1954 brochure is from a series of photos on eBay that were taken at angles. I straightened them out to make them more readable, but the quality is still pretty poor.

This first image is out of the 1955 Specialize Equipment Booklet.

Body Extensions For Early 1/4 Ton Jeeps

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: .

UPDATE: Someone in Georgia is selling newly built beds (see post below). So, I thought it would be a good time to rerun this post.

========================

Originally published in 2016: This may come as a surprise (not) that early jeeps weren’t known for their vast amounts of space. We’ve all seen military photos showing jeeps packed full of stuff, like this SAS desert fighter:

sas-jeep

When the war ended and CJ-2As were introduced, a couple companies recognized the need for more room and solved the problem by creating add-on bed extensions (also known as bed extenders and body extensions). These bolted to the back and, usually, had supports that dropped to the PTO bar to help support the extra weight. Then, the tailgate was fixed to the very rear of the extension. The goal of this post is an effort to identify the different companies and their products.

As early as August and September of 1946, two different patents were filed, both by the same people.I have been unable to discover if that first patent model was ever built, but the second one has two sides that fold down similar to the Newgren (shown in #2).

Various Bed Extensions identified so far:

  1. Porter Reed Bed Extension: One of the earliest known bed extensions was produced by Porter & Reed. It was marked along with a half top, creating a truck out of a jeep.
    porter-reed-hardtop-closeup-bed-extension
    porter-reed-hardtop-extendedbed-1 porter-reed-hardtop-extendedbed-2
  2. Newgren Bed Extensions: The Newgren Company also entered the bed extension field in the later 1940s with two different versions. The first was their standard bed extension:1947-special-equipment-newgren-body-extension2
The second model Newgren offered was a collapsable version.
    1947-special-equipment-bed-extension-newgren-collapsible
  3. S & B Corporation’s Jeep Panel Body: About the same time Newgren and Porter & Reed introduced their extensions, the S & B Corporation made their own spin on adding more room by selling a kit that converted the jeep into a panel van.
    s-b-corporation-panel-truck-from-cj2a-brochure1-lores s-b-corporation-panel-truck-from-cj2a-brochure2-lores
  4. Koenig Bed Extensions: By 1955, Koenig had entered the market. Whether the company designed their own or bought out one of their competitors isn’t know (to me), but Koenig sold the extensions for at least a decade. This first ad is from 1955, the second from 1960, and the third from the mid-1960s.

    koenig-bed-extender-cs-co3
  5. Wall & Borg Bed Extender: In the 1960s, a Lake Tahoe, California, company called Wahl & Borg introduced a unique bed extension. Rather than bolt on to the rear of the jeep, theirs slid out.
    wahl-borg-slide-out-bed-extender

There have been a number of bed extensions that have resold over the last ten years on Craigslist and eBay, some attached to jeeps and some by themselves. I have found it difficult to distinguish between them, never having owned or seen that many up close. You can see all the ones documents thus far on eWillys: http://www.ewillys.com/tag/bed-extension/

Derek Redmond also has some excellent information on extensions over at the CJ-3B Page. https://cj3b.info/Tech/BodyExtension.html

WANTED: Photo of an Early Monroe 3-Point Lift Tag

• CATEGORIES: Features, wanted

Ted Jordan is hoping to find a good photo of a data tag from an early Monroe 3-Point Lift. Apparently, the early lifts did not have stampings; instead they had a tag attached as shown in the poor photo below. Ted would like to get a good photo of one so he can have the tag recreated. If you have something, either comment below, email me d @ deilers.com or email Ted direction willysted @ charter.net.

“J” Cap Hubcaps Spokane, WA $120

• CATEGORIES: Features

Did we ever determine the origin of these hubcaps? A similar use of the “J” logo was used on Cutlas hubcaps, but the hubcap was much more plain and the lettering was black, not red. A similar set was for sale in Florida back in 2017. I checked the Brian Chuchua and Conferr catalogs, but there’s sign of them in there.
