Magazine Research Archives

Jeeps filled magazines in various ways. Some magazines reported on brand new ‘Blitz Buggy’ and other important develops about the jeep during WWII. Others reported on the changing models during its civilian life. Still others showcased how jeeps were used and the modifications done to them.

The Odograph: A Robot Mapper

• CATEGORIES: Features, Magazine • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

An article about the Odograph was published in the December, 1944, issue of Popular Science. At 200 pounds, the Odograph auto-created maps as soldiers navigated towards some objective. I couldn’t locate any records that indicate how many were made (anyone know), but there it appears there are nine jeeps that still have them (based on the latest info I could find). I found a few different references about it over at G503.

Vic Hickey’s Supercharged Flathead from Car Craft Magazine

There’s an interesting article about Vic Hickey’s supercharged flat fender in the February 1955 issue of Car Craft Magazine.  The cover shows a great color photo of the supercharger. Using a GMC Supercharger, the Vic made a variety of changes to deal with issues related to the installation.

Slat Grille By Cable in May 5, 1942, Life Magazine

• CATEGORIES: Features, Magazine • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I bought a cheap copy of the May 5, 1942, issue of Life Magazine off ebay the other day. In it I found these photos on page 8-11. It was a failed effort to slide a jeep across a river by cable.

Before I show a the hanging jeep, I wanted to share the photo below that shows some jeeps aboard a vessel of some sort.

Ad for Hickey 4×4 in Four Wheeler Magazine

I ran across this unusual ad for the complete setup for an unusual 4×4 in the February 1964 issue of Four Wheeler Magazine. The prototypes and parts were being sold by Vic Hickey (or he was acting as an agent). Anyone have more information on this? It appears to be a four wheel drive dune buggy.

While the concept of the Super Drake was tested, I don’t believe it ever achieved production (at least I couldn’t find anything about it).

“An Original 1956 ONE-Page pictorial that was removed from a vintage Magazine. Perfect size to mat and frame, it measures 6½ x 9¼ inches.

Article Excerpt: “With eight wheels, all of them powered, the Army’s latest amphibious vehicle, the Drake, can outride the heaviest surf.”

Shown on bottom of page is the first 2 1/2-ton Duck, the 4-ton Superduck and the Drake.”

Nov 1945 Yank Magazine Cover on eBay

• CATEGORIES: Features, Magazine This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This is certainly an unusual photo.

“Yank, the Army Weekly was a weekly magazine published by the United States military during World War II. The idea for the magazine came from Egbert White, who had worked on Stars and Stripes during World War I. The first issue was published with the cover date of June 17, 1942. The magazine was written by enlisted rank soldiers only and was made available to the soldiers, sailors, and airmen serving overseas. It was published at facilities around the world—British, Mediterranean, Continental, and Western Pacific—for a total of 21 editions in 17 countries. Yank was the most widely read magazine in the history of the U.S. military, achieving a worldwide circulation of more than 2.6 million. Each issue was priced from five cents to 10 cents because it was felt that if soldiers paid, they would have a higher regard for the publication. Each issue was edited in New York City and then shipped for printing around the world where staff editors added local stories. The last issue was published in December 1945.”
