Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. The top bows are $700 a set. A price for the top clips were not included. Both the both bows and the clips are for the DJ-3A convertible model (solid back and CJ-3B-like windshield with twist-knobs across the top). The seller only has a few sets made. He notes that he isn’t making any money on them and has been more than willing to share information on the insights he gains trying to make his top.
The soft top is something custom the seller had made by an upholsterer. It took him some work to redesign and properly fit the top so that it would fold up and connect to the windshield properly, yet also fold down and attach to the body.

Joe in Mesa spotted this ad. The body looks to be from a DJ-3A convertible. I can’t tell what the chassis is, but odds are it’s a CJ-2A.

“1956 dj3a titled as a 47cj2a. I have the body tag for the dj3a. It has been converted to 4×4 , but was very well done. 134l runs and drives, but no brakes. new master cylinder but I think it needs wheel cylinders. 5.38 gears, new fluids all around. Very nice body, barely any rust except the floors which the PO had diamond plated. 21000 miles that seems to be legit. Price is 4000 obo, may be interested in trades.”
This jeep sold within an hour of being posted (at $2500) on Facebook. You’ll note it’s a DJ-3A body with footman loops across the back and on the fenders. The jeep has a column shifter. It’s also got pink under the hood. It appears it never had the oil bath filter; instead, it likely had the wire gauze filter. So, I suspect it was a DJ-3A Surrey.
UPDATE: This did not reach the reserve, so it did not sell. I don’t know what the seller plans to do next.
The current bid is $1600 with four days to go. The reserve has not been met.

What you see is what you get, NO title. Too bad, I learned how to drive in this jeep. L134 flathead engine, column shift, two-wheel drive. Rusty & rotted. Dont know if engine still turns. This originally had the enclosed rear; what the post office used years ago before they got what they are using today. Lots of updates to this custom build. The body appears to be from a DJ-3A Convertible or a Surrey. The front frame rails have a curious shape; the chassis may not be a jeep chassis.

This 1971 photo shows Barney Goodwin in his 1963 DJ-3A. No doubt he was the coolest kid at his Houston, Texas, High School!
This is a relatively rare right-hand-drive DJ-3A with an even rarer automatic transmission (see 4th pic… shifter to the right of steering wheel). Unclear how much value is here, but certainly some parts value at the very least. It has an f-head.

“I had big plans for this cool little mail jeep but I have too many projects. It is a 1964 DJ3A dispatcher. They stopped making flat fender jeeps in 52 but they had so many parts left over they continue to make flat fender delivery vehicles into the mid 60s. It is very rare, I haven’t seen another one for sale. It does not run or drive, it is a project. I have a clean clear CA title in hand. This nice looking DJ-3A has a few mods, such as the wrong tailgate, incorrect turn lights. extra rear bumper, extra gauges and some changes within the engine compartment. The history listed isn’t quite right either.

While looking for something else, I was pleasantly surprised with this video of Bruce Agan’s former 1964 DJ-3A Surrey. The video was posted in 2012, prior to his passing. He was the guru of Surreys and Galas for a time and his restoration (including all the interior fabric) is a testament to that fact. There are various photos of his Surrey, Surrey advertising, and other jeeps on Flickr.

(08/18/2020) This is a nice looking DJ-3A, though it does have a few restoration inaccuracies. It’s listed as a 1965, but the serial number indicates it is an April 1964 DJ-3A.

(07/14/2020) With 3-on-the-tree and 2WD it sounds like a DJ-3A. The solid back suggests it may have been a convertible model; yet the body has cutout in the rear wells consistent with having been mounted on an MB/GPW. Has the correct hand brake, but incorrect gauges. Has the correct front end, but incorrect rear end. Has the correct 2/3 1/3 seats for a convertible model. Has the incorrect windshield.
