Different Versions of the Koenig-Manufactured Hardtop

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Adding to this post, there are a few examples of DJ-3As with wide windowed hardtops. It’s possible they were just using the CJ-5 hardtops. http://www.ewillys.com/2021/02/10/photos-of-a-1956-rhd-dj3a/

=================

Original post from March 17, 2020:

1956-dj3a-brochure-2

The small rear window can be seen on the back of the top at the left top of this 1956 DJ-3A brochure.

Mike raised a question the other day, which resulted in us learning something new. He was viewing the launch-brochure for the DJ-3A when he noticed that the Koenig-manufactured hardtop was illustrated with a small rear window. Up to that point, Mike and I and several other folks were under the impression that all these tops had the same size rear window, but in fact that was false.

Instead, it appears that in 1955, through 1946(?) and possibly into 1957, Jeep used a small window in the back of the top, before moving to a larger one. Especially with the DJ-3As, with their lack of side windows, that small window would have made backing up difficult, as it would have been hard to see anything behind the driver.

Here are the four types of hardtops of this style identified so far.

  1. This top was available as early as 1955. This photo is a 1955 press photo showing a CJ-5 with the small window in the back. The CJ-5 version of the top also came with side windows. The image below is also available on eBay.
    cj5-koenig-hardtop-small-rear-window
  2. It’s not clear when the transition occurred, but in late 1956 or in 1957 the top began arriving with a much larger window as seen in this photo.
    1962-cj5-suffern-ny4
  3. Though an early photo of the DJ-3A with this style of top showed it with windows, the production version was manufactured without side windows.
    1956-dj3a-buffalo-ny8This photo shows the same jeep from the side. You can see the lack of side windows.

  4. This image shows a 1964 hardtop on a DJ-3A with the larger window.

Dean Martin and a Jeepster Commando

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Mike shared this photo that was drifting around Facebook. It’s clip of Dean Martin behind a Jeepster Commando. According to the Facebook post, “Dean Martin, Senta Berger, Janice Rule, and a ‘67 Jeepster Commando Station Wagon. From the 1967 Matt Helm film “The Ambushers”.” As Derek Redmond pointed out, it’s not the only Jeep in that movie.

The Internet Movie Car Database has even more pics from the movie. In fact, Jeepster Commandos appeared in a variety of movies: https://www.imcdb.org/vehicles_make-Jeep_model-Jeepster+Commando.html

Kaiser Jeep Automatic Transmission Service Guide

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Documents, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Maury spotted this one. It was on eBay (sold for $17.50). This 1979 guide seems a clever way to diagnose transmission problems.

“”Kaiser Jeep Corporation Automatic Transmission Circular Slide Rule Calculator” by the writers and illustrators of Kaiser Jeep Corporation, Toledo Ohio. No Copyright data; research indicates Kaiser Jeep used Borg-Warner transmissions at least 1970-1972 – probably longer. Here is a guide for use while servicing those transmissions. Kaiser Jeep published the wheel as a Mechanic’s tool, and as an advertising piece, for their dealers selling retail product in that era. Note – the photos you see are of this mechanic’s tool and advertising piece – no ‘Stock Photos’.

A tight firm clean double-wheel ‘slide rule’ calculator in tan/black, unmarked, a trifle darkened after a half-Century on a shelf. 7 1/4″ in diameter; the inner wheel is 5 1/2″ in diameter.

A guide to when service is required on these transmissions;
The order in which the tests should be made;
The reverse shows the Pressure Levels, where the Transmission selector (gearshift) should be place and what RPM or MPH should be utilized in those tests;
Speeds at which downshifts should be made.
A solid clean circular slide rule – lots of data on the reverse. Direct from a postwar Jeep dealer’s library. No mustiness, No smoke smell. We do try to describe them correctly – We want you back as a customer – hundreds of repeat customers. “

1957(?) How to Use 4 Wheel Drive Booklet

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Books, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This 4 Wheel Drive Booklet was likely produced between 1955-1957. An accompanying order form (seen at the bottom) suggests it was likely a 1957. The booklet was assigned form W-640. It’s not in the best of shape, but it also wasn’t very expensive.

The is a much better version of this booklet as compared to the earlier version from 1952.

Vintage Dealer Photo from Galax, Virginia

Chris spotted this Jeep dealer photo taken in Galax, Virginia, on a Carroll County Facebook page. If you look carefully, you’ll see the round ‘Service’ Jeep sign (painted?) on the building with an extra large “P”.

There’s still a Mink Motor Sales company that sells used cars. I can’t tell if this venture is the same location as shown in in the pic below.

1953 Ramar of the Jungle Program

• CATEGORIES: Features, videos This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Mike shared this episode one of season one introduction to the Ramar of the Jungle TV program. It opens with an MB overheating. At another point, the same guy starts to “work” on the brakes by banging on something (didn’t sound like the brakes) with a wrench.

Worlds Largest Bison, Jamestown, ND

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Just a few updates today, as I’m wiped.

2020-03-08-jamestown-us-bison

That’s one big bison behind us!

Yesterday morning Ms. Betty Page woke us up at 6am. She slept all night on her own, so we weren’t too unhappy with her morning wake up whines.

We’d spent Saturday night in Jamestown, North Dakota. Since it wasn’t quite light out yet, we piled in the jeep, filled up the tank, and found an open Caribou Coffee as we waited for the sunrise, because we wanted to see a special bison.

One of Jamestown’s claims to fame is its giant bison Sculpture, standing 26′ tall and 46 feet long. We decided that before we left town, we’d drive on over to the bison to get a ‘family’ photo. We figured we’d have the bison to ourselves, as who would be crazy enough to get up at day break on a 30 degree Sunday morning to look at a giant fake bison (besides us)?

It turned out, there was a whole frontier town that lined the street leading up to the bison! The cold, quiet morning and some low lying clouds gave the old, empty frontier town an eerie feeling. It was cool.

Here are a few pics.

Just before the Frontier town gates, there was a two story viewing platform (on the left) and a large Prairie Schooner shaped chuckwagon to its right. Both overlook a herd of bison (we couldn’t tell if the bison were there at this time or not).

2020-03-08-jamestown-chuckwagon

After driving through a set of gates (which we were surprised to see open), we encountered an old train depot, a few other buildings, then this general store and church.

2020-03-08-jamestown-church-general-store

Just beyond the church was a museum, though it was closed (we didn’t have time for it anyway). After the general store and church was a series of buildings that we had to drive through to get to the bison (the bison is behind me in the below pic).

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

Maury spotted this one. Listed as a 1943 Ad, this clearly was a post war ad. The first clue is the CJ looking grille. The second clue is the suggestion that folks could find a plow at their “Jeep Dealer”. It’s likely a late 1940s brochure, as it has shown up in late 1940s Willys-Overland Special Equipment booklets.
